Yes, the USA would surely love the fact that Mexicans could legally live in their country now.

The Union would only work with defense and trade, and perhaps agricultural and fishery policies.

I honestly had not taken that into consideration. But, before Mexico could join the NAU, it would have to meet criteria set by Canada and the United States (it is obvious these two would be the founding members, as I doubt any other nation in the North American continent currently has the same standards).

We wouldn't just get to pick and choose at random what we want. For example, I would not want to carry over gay marriage and 18 years of age as the drinking age as well as carry over restrictions on firearms. If you want gay marriage and to change the drinking age you can do that here, in this country, without sacrificing other freedoms at the expense of gaining more minor ones.

Not saying gay marriage is minor, but I believe it is when compared to what we would be trading it for. We can just work on that on our own without needing approval from any other country.

I never said it was a step backwards. Now you are trying to put words in my mouth. We don't need other nations telling us what to do. A union would take away our power to solely govern ourselves. Joining a union to simply legalize gay marriage and change the drinking age is ridiculous. We might "gain" some freedoms, but we would lose a lot more.
