So I'm fiddling with the idea of an NPC to interact with my Cartel character. But what are the limits for an NPC? Meaning, what can and can't they do. Can the go on missions, complete bounties, participate in combat? If not, is there precedent for RP a 'minor/supporting' character if NPCs are limited in what they can do? Thanks.

Not really. As long as its within reason there is no reason why your character can't bring someone along for the ride.

Well...I want them to be more than just "along for the ride". I want them to "take part". For instance, my character is largely intelligence based, so I'd like to have his NPC helping establish his contacts and such independently of what my character is doing. I haven't read up on the rules yet, but I feel like the things I'm thinking of (like being in a thread independent of the main character) would push the limits of an NPC.

Well, if you only have three characters already and you're questioning whether it would be okay as an NPC, you could just make them a PC

I've thought about that...but, reasons.

I think the general rule is to not go crazy with how many and not to make them just to get more powerful. If you have a few good, balanced characters that you have that you want to make into NPCs, I don't see why not.

Alright, I'll give it a whirl. If it turns out I need to make a character profile for the NPC I don't mind.

As far as I know, what you're asking is ok, you can have an npc be almost anything you want it to be within reason (i.e. no making a Darth or Jedi council member etc.) I've made plenty of Npc's to help enhance my characters story, everything from friends and family to pets and antagonists. And you don't even need a profile for them... that I know of :3
