DESCRIPTION​

Ore Crawlers are massive industrial crawler vehicles. They work by using two ultra-short-range, high-intensity tractor beams to literally tear the ground apart and sort raw material. A highly robust filter system consisting of grates, rototillers capable of chewing through even the hardest rock, and ore scanners is able to detect ore concentrations and either send batches of mined material to a cavernous storage tank, or out through vents along the side. These gigantic vehicles are slow, and a typical deployment is weeks to months depending on the concentration of mineral wealth in the region it is mining.

While entirely capable of mining on their own, Ore Crawlers work best in conjunction with teams of mining droids that follow ore-rich veins underground. The Ore Crawler will "make the circuit" across a wide region, visiting numerous such mines, picking up the ore gathered and deposited in designated drop-off spots. Once an Ore Crawler nears capacity, it will signal headquarters. A freighter will come, collect the gathered ore, and rotate out crew with fresh consumables. Some mining outfits supply a droid to pilot the crawlers while the organic crew sleeps, ensuring constant production.

While not armed, sometimes Ore Crawlers are given an armed guard detail as their presence may be upsetting (sometimes intentionally so) to local communities. Though Ore Crawlers are designed to withstand damage from calamities such as landslides or falling boulders, making them effectively immune to small-arms fire, their ponderous speed enables them to be boarded even while moving. A guard detail deters such action.

To flesh out the large-scale industrial setting that would be needed to supply the vast construction efforts of intergalactic economies, governments, and war machines. These can be used as targets of plots for either acquisition, destruction, or even terrorizing dissident communities.
