Eris stared out the ship's window, watching the planets and asteroids fly by. Staring at the galaxy, at the sheer vastness of everything, made her realize just how minuscule she was. It was terrifying. She took a breath. There was enough happening as it was, she didn't need an existential crisis on top of all that. Truly, the universe was beautiful, as scary as it was.
"Eris!" Jenton called.
Eris walked to the cockpit.
"Yes, sir?"
"Come here. I've got another lesson for you."
Jenton's "lessons" only happened every so often, whenever Jenton had something he wanted to teach her, and they were short. Eris knew she should pay attention; he never gave the same lesson twice. She walked over to him.
"Alright, landing: First, you want to turn the gas switch down by two every fifteen seconds, only going to half of what you were. You try."
Eris reached for the switch, turned it down two, counted fifteen seconds, and turned it down again. She did this until it was at thirty, half of sixty.
"Now, adjust the altitude by pulling down on the wheel."
Eris followed his instruction until they were within about twenty feet of the hangar.
"Alternate between both maneuvers until your speed is zero and you land."
Eris did exactly that, pulling on the wheel with one hand and lowering the gas with the other. Soon, the meter said zero, and not a second later, she felt the skidders hit the runway. She let go of the wheel, noticing how tightly she had been holding onto it, and took a breath. They were on Garel, an urban planet on the southern part of the galaxy. Eris wondered what they were doing here? Perhaps it was a trade they needed to seal, or they were in need of a repair. At any rate, it didn't matter. Jenton exited the ship, followed by Eris. They walked around the city, as if looking for something or someone, even though Eris was mostly sightseeing.
