Description: The Kandosii-class Battleship is the Mandalorian Dominion's premier class of warship. Designed by Mandalorian engineers to serve as the core of Mandalorian battlegroups and to best the Imperial's Empyreal-class Star Destroyers in combat they act as both flagships, carriers, and the First-rate ships-of-the-line. A single Kandosii is a force to be reckoned with as it is bristling with heavy guns and thick armor, though this comes at the obvious cost of speed and maneuverability. The Kandosii are large and sluggish, turning and accelerating slowly, but in a straight line they can eventually build up significant momentum, making it a dangerous ram when combined with its wedge-shaped prow. With its numerous docking tubes, the Kandosii is capable of pulling up alongside disabled capital ships and boarding them, dispatching its compliment of ten thousand Mandalorian warriors into the enemy ship. It also has a compliment of ground vehicles and Troopship Landers to allow it to ferry forces to the surface of a terrestrial body where ground emplacements and strongholds can be engaged and destroyed.

(I'm going to be working this over time. So if things don't look totally fleshed out there's a reason for it.)

Mandalorian History and Culture

The first rogue warriors who would become Mandalorians were a group of wandering castouts of more "civilized" cultures and worlds. Where these early warriors came from is lost to the oblivion of time, all that is known about them is that they were led by one who called themselves "Mand'alor" and who was the greatest of the warriors. These wandering warriors raided their way around the Galaxy, taking supplies what they needed by force, and assimilating other species and worlds into their growing band, and subjugating rival bands of warriors. They eventually happened onto a garden world in the outer rim of the Galaxy after many years of traveling which had been settled by some castouts of other cultures. This would be the place the Galaxy would come to know as Mandalore, but the ancient star warriors would no doubt have had a name for it in their old proto-Mando'a tongue.

At first, things were good as the warriors of Mand'alor settled the world and it's large habitable moon (which turned out to be densely filled with mineral ores capable of producing hard and valuable metals). Though, things were not harmonious between the vying bands of warriors, and as the followers of Mand'alor recruited and drew more warriors to their world from fellow exiles. In fact as word spread that there was a planet for warriors to live, bands and sects of warriors, exiles and outcasts of a myriad of worlds came to this haven.

Soon the disunity came to a boiling point amongst the warriors as the disparate groups of warriors began allying with each other or fighting with others. Open warefare arose and rival warbands (debated by historians and anthropologists as the precursors to the modern clans and houses) fought with each across the surface of their world. However, Mand'alor would not stand for the fighting and rallying those loyal to him he quickly brought the warbands to heel, defeating many of their leaders in single combat. The last of the rebels were defeated on the moon where Mand'alor bound the warriors he defeated into a blood oath of eternal loyalty and signed the accords which provided proof of their fealty.

Thereafter, they named the moon Concordia after the writ which changes the course of history for these people, and perhaps even, the Galaxy. After Mand'alor had conquered the warbands of his world, he rewarded his most loyal and elite followers and named them his Protectors and they became his guardians, remaining by his side and ensuring the peace existed between the warbands under his command.

From there the tenuous alliance of warriors not only settled the system, creating farms and forges, towns and cities, and pieces of architecture and infrastructure that would not only define the proto-Mandalorian culture, but they began exploring, discovering safe hyperspace routes, new worlds and civilizations which they brought into their domain. It was during this time that the warbands became clans and houses, some were familial units, others were political alliances, but they all fought and died for the Mand'alor.

During these early expeditions the Mandalorians encountered traders from the core worlds, and according to one account, when asked what planet they hailed from the reply was, "From the world of (the) Mand'alor." And from there these traders named the land Mandalore (the Galactic Basic way of pronouncing Mand'alor) and those warriors who came from there Mandalorians. Another story says that after Mand'alor the First conquered the system, settling Concordia, Kalevala, and of course Mandalore, he named the star and the planet that became the seat of his power after himself so that his achievements would be remembered for aeons to come. Whatever the reason, what is known is that during the first expeditions of these warriors, the Mand'alor came to call all those who fought for him his sons and daughters, and thus, in the tongue which was quickly developing into Mando'a they were Mando'ade, the Sons and Daughters of Mand'alor. Thus, the Mandalorian people were born.

These early Mandalorians were seen as uncivilized barbarians by the people of the coreward worlds, and this misconception exists today due to propogation by Republic historians and Mandalorian apologists whose goals were to make the Republic look like they brought civility and culture to the world of warriors. This could not be further from the truth, however, and while these proto and nascent Mandalorians would no doubt seem rough and brutish and backwards to the sensible inhabitants of worlds like Chandrila, Alderaan, and Corellia, the Mandalorians were quite civilized and cultured in their own right. Early Mandalorians were in fact known for their medical technology, their trailblazing, and their architectural and engineering mastery relative for their time. After all, a societies who fought often would need to ensure that its warriors stayed healthy and capable of constructing weapons, armor, buildings, and voidcraft that would endure the stress of warfare. And this society who were originally space faring wanderers who enjoyed finding new people to test their skill against would undoubtedly try become skilled in finding new worlds and new hyperspace routes. This system of "road building" would also have the added affect of improving trade and commerce of Mandalorian worlds, as well as allowing longer supply lines for Mandalorian expeditions.

It was during this time of growth, annexation, and expansion that worlds like Concord Dawn and its moons were colonized. Though, it would be a founding which would quickly lead to more infighting, after all, not all Mand'alors were as strong as Mand'alor the First and so the reoccurring debate of Concord Dawn's independence continued to be hotly contested quickly leading to Mandalorians fighting each other. These are fiercely independent people, and one must remember that many people choose to colonize new worlds to be free of the issues and oppression of their old home. After several years of resistance and bitter rivalries Concord Dawn rose up against Mandalore casting off the rule of the clans and declaring their own independence. While they still called themselves Mandalorians, they were not subjects of the Throne.

After many years of expansion, often violent and bloody, where clans like Clan Wren of Krownest were absorbed into the Mandalorian feudal system, the clans encountered the Jedi. The first encounter was as violent as one might think as the guardians of peace and justice engaged the conflict-loving warriors of Mandalore. This first encounter with the Jedi Order must have been quite the shock to the Mandalorians who faced them as these robed warriors used swords made of energy that could cut through anything and tricks and magic to fight them without even touching them. One can only imagine the distrust the Mandalorians must have held for the Jedi after that, viewing them as tricksters who used their mystical energies to best the greatest of them, but also seeing in them an opponent worth challenging. If these laser-sword wielding warriors could best them then they would need to find a way to overcome this advantage they held. This encounter spurred Mandalorians into a phase of technological development as the Mandalorians began creating weapons which could stand up to their lightsabers, and equipment which would mimic or counter some of the tricks of the Jedi.

  • A note on Mandalorian helmets and the ubiquitous T-shaped visor. It is believed that Mand'alor the First wore a mask made of the crest plate of some beast or alien he slew, inserting a visor into a T-shaped gap in the crest and this became the first Mandalorian mask. Later, once the warriors became known as the Mando'ade did they begin mimicking their leader by creating similar masks of bone and metal with their own distinctive T-visors. Over time the construction of these helmets and masks would change and become roughly uniform as the Mandalorian people united, though, there were often differences in the stylings of each individual clan and house, not to mention personal tastes. After many changes to the Mandalorian armor (reforms in training, armor making, and improvements in technology) the design would became close to what there is today. After first battle with the Jedi the ancient mask of Mand'alor was reforged with phrik and electrum making it both resistant to lightsabers as well as a display of Mand'alor's status.

Mandalorian Families, Marriages, Relationships, and Women

All Mandalorians regardless of clan or house consider family the most important thing to them, and those who do not are the exception to the rule. Mandalorian families are close-knit and caring groups who protect their own with the same ferocity that a mother vornskr protects her pups. Many a tale has been told of a Mandalorian clan exterminating those who harmed one of their own, even against impossible odds.

Marriages were things both celebrated and revered by the Mandalorian people. In Mandalorian society, a marriage is the joining two people to make a family, though normally done out of love and a desire to settle down with the other person, there is often evidence for Mandalorians marrying for political alliances to cement relationships between clans and houses. Marriages normally last until one spouse dies, or the marriage is dissolved. A typical marriage ceremony would involve the two Mandalorians swearing oaths of faithfulness, honesty, and loyalty to each other, often promising to fight and die for the other, and to raise a family of warriors. These oaths would be done in private or before a spiritial guide or priest. In more modern times this oath would be made to a trusted oath-bound friend or even an official who could vouch for the two. There would be a chance for one to object to the marriage before the vows are accepted, however, this would often require a duel to the death (believed to be the source of the saying that a Mandalorian wedding without three deaths was considered to be a dull affair, though the veracity of this statement is uncertain as most modern Mandalorian weddings are relatively tame). Afterwards, there would be a reception where the family and friends of the newlyweds would eat, drink, and be merry in celebration of the conjugation. Song and dance were very common, and there are several songs that are sung about legendary marriages in the belief that they are blessing the marriage. Nice clothing and jewelry was expected, though not always worn, and many Mandalorians would wear their armor to the wedding in the expectation of violence, or simply because many Mandalorians prefer their armor to wearing nice clothes. Fidelity was expected between the married, and there is an ancient law recorded that a woman who discovered her husband was unfaithful to her had three days where she could seek vengeance free from the confines of the law (these three days start from the moment of notice, at which point the woman had free reign to do as she wished to the cheating husband, but only the husband). Alternatively, if a man found his wife was unfaithful with another man, he similarly had three days to act freely of the law to the other man. However, it should be noted that while it was expected to remain faithful, any child born of an affair was expected to be raised as any trueborn child without any stigma regarding their conception, and was expected to be loved and cared for all the same if the marriage endured. Marriage was not restricted to men and women, homosexual marriages were also accepted, however they were still expected to follow the resol'nare and raise Mandalorian children. And indeed, marriages between species was also widely accepted, though most Mandalorian marriages would remain human or near-human as they comprised the majority of the clans.

Courtship was rather standard for the galaxy and had it's own unique variations for each relationship. It should be noted that while married couples are expected to remain faithful to each other, the same standard was not applied to single people. A single Mandalorian, regardless of gender, was allowed to be as sexually promiscuous as they wished without fear of taboo or stigma. In fact there is a quotation from the wife of a Mand'alor to the wife of an Alderaanian Senator when the latter made a remark about Mandalorian women's free intercourse with their men which goes, "We fulfill the demands of nature in a much better way than do you Republic women; for we consort openly with the best men, whereas you let yourselves be debauched in secret by the vilest."

Mandalorian women have often been regarded highly in Mandalorian culture, as they are viewed as not only the bringers of life, but as the teachers of the children, the defenders of the homestead, and skilled warriors and huntresses in their own right. In fact there are historical records from the Republic detailing the beauty of the tall and strong Mandalorian women, saying that no army can stand against a Mandalorian clan if the women of their clan are brought to ire.

  • “It will be a rough path. A lot of us will die. A lot more than what we saw back at the camp. I know that now. In order to keep it from happening again, we have to drive back the threats ourselves and end it where it begins. That is a path I will follow you to, Ral.” - Moira Kryze

Born on the outer rim world of Mandalore, Ral Vizsla was born to an influencial, if somewhat radical noble of House Vizsla, Gideon. His father was a Mandalorian who believed that diplomacy, negotiations, and accords could help to settle differences before they turned bloody. Needless to say this branded him a bit of a pariah by most of the warrior societies on the planet, but Ral's father was not deterred and quickly plotted and schemed his way into positions of power, and when statecraft failed, he reverted to the old warrior ways of the clans ensuring he obtained what he desired. It was with this set of skills, and this notion of "diplomacy first" that Ral's father passed on to his son.

Growing up on Mandalore, Ral was caught in the dichotomy of his father's desire for him to learn the art of politics and statecraft, and the societal norm of martial adeptness and glory in combat. It was not an easy childhood for the young scion, and he didn't take to either the history and speechcraft lessons, nor the weapons and martial arts exercises. However, wishing to please his father, whom he respected and loved deeply, Ral continued on, persevering despite not particularly enjoying the coursework. Eventually, the young Mandalorian became quite good at what both diplomacy and the more aggressive forms of discourse.

When he was sixteen, Ral joined the Mandalorian militia, a typical thing for most young Mandos his age. While serving in the militia went on his first raid with a group of similarly young Mandalorians. They ambushed a group of smugglers and liberated their prize, bringing it back to Mandalore as part of their spoils. It was an eventful year for the eager young Vizsla, winning more than a few accolades and personally leading another raid on marauders on the border of their space.
    The Golden Age

At seventeen, Ral was selected to help lead a hunting expedition to the wild fringe world of Felucia to help work with some younger trainees learn the necessary skills that would help them later on as warriors. There he met Moira Kryze, a young and energetic blonde girl a few years younger than him, in a muddy puddle. It was she who volunteered to go with him on a patrol. On their patrol they were attacked by a nest of Felucian Rippers, and escaping them, found themselves falling into a long buried network of ruins where they were beset upon once more by aborigines. Before they escaped back to their camp, Moira found an amulet strong in the dark side of the Force, though neither knew it at the time. When they returned to their camp, they found everyone there slaughtered by an unknown foe who used a weapon which burned and cauterized as it wounded. After a sullen funeral for their fallen comrades the pair returned to Mandalore to tell their fathers what happened. Over the next year the pair became very close, a pair of warriors who could read each other's movements during battle, and the deepest of friends as well.

When Ral was eighteen, his father was brutally murdered by Force Users in the streets of Sundari. A group of cloaked Force Users attacked a group of Mandalorians near Ral's house looking for something, so his father, Ral, and Moira joined in the fray. Together they managed to kill several of the shrouded Force Users. However, their leader proved to be too powerful, and he bested them. Blasting Ral's father out of the sky with lightning, and injuring Moira, and gravely wounding Ral, claiming his arm. During the next two weeks, Ral recovered slowly, being fitted with a new prosthetic arm. His grief, shame, and anger for being defeated drove him away from the planet though as he began his quest of vengeance. Ral felt the burning compulsion to hunt down the masked man who had wounded himself and killed his father. This didn't go over well with Moira, the girl Ral had grown to love more than a friend. Before he left they exchanged helmets and Ral asked her to wait for him.

Unsure who these Force Users were, Ral could only guess at what their true identity was. Due to Mandalore's proximity to the Sith border, and the nature of the Sith to use such underhanded tactics, Ral presumed it to be the work of a Sith assassin.
    A Soldier On His Own

During his twenty-third year, Ral found a former Jedi, left for dead by his companions, and in the hands of a Sith raiding party. Reaching the lost Jedi, Ral saved him, and upon realizing the man was of Mandalorian stock offered him place where he'd be accepted and not left for dead.

At the age of twenty-four Ral rescued a female Togruta from slavers named Zevi. After he freed her it became readily apparent the alien was tenacious and contained a warrior's spirit in her heart. Seeing this, and desiring another companion, Ral offered a spot by his side as a friend. She accepted, and the two began a long and frugal relationship fighting outlaws, marauders, pirates, and sometimes corporations at the behest of rival corporations. They'd often work with Ral's cousin Caedryn on various jobs.

Time passed and Ral met many people over the course of his many years wandering. Realizing he would never find his father's killer this way, Ral realized it was time to return. He had heard of the complacency in the Mandalorian government, and how it had become inept, full of men and women who only cared about personal gain. Now he has returned to Mandalore with the hope of seeing his people become great again.
