Naalol

Despite being over a century since the Galactic Civil War, the people of Naalol had not forgotten what it has done to its world. Farms still remained unusable, the soil far too damaged and would need several more centuries before any hope could be salvaged. Though the families who had owned the land long forgone any hope and in their place gangs and pirates had set up territory in the plains. In the cities around Naalol, the people were reminded of the shelling, the bloodshed, and atrocities conducted by both sides of the war; the locals loved to point out where blood spilt and now stained the stone streets. Then there were the people who settled in the mountainous regions. Mining though has lasted, but had been overrun by corporate giants as the people were able to still create a living, a silver lining to an otherwise dire circumstances for the peaceful world.

In hopes to continue to remain neutral, the world of Naalol created a planetary council decades prior to handle off-worlder's and give some inkling of progress and sustainability maintain the livelihood of the people who call this world home. However, recently they found remaining isolated was not always great. After trying to resolve the issue on their own for several months, the council agreed to extend a welcoming to anyone who could figure out what was causing miners in the northern regions to return from their shifts deathly ill. The mine had to be shut down and small teams had been sent to further investigate revealing markings of unknown origin, sickness, and upon their most recent return, parts that closely resembled to that of droids.

News like this didn't stay put on Naalol for very long and Tiamat was one of many who had reached out with their credentials to investigate further, though she by far had the greatest reputation. Despite their weariness for the Empire, the council agreed to allow the woman to investigate further. Given its location, just a quick hop from Eiattu, Tiamat extended an invite to Altair in hopes he would answer her. He been absent, she hadn't heard much from him despite her efforts since the death of Clove and her family, and she decided to let it be for the time being. As much as she wanted to be there, if he didn't want her there, she would accept it, but it didn't mean she liked it. She understood the planet's weariness to off-worlders, however, with Altair's reputation on Eiattu as so far in the region, perhaps it would give them as well as the tiefling some goodwill that could foster an alliance. Tia wished just for enough goodwill to allow her to keep her research team present and extract what they would need to understand what this place used to be long ago.

When she first arrived, her senses told her of something unfamiliar and familiar at the same time. A power, or energy that flowed from the Force no doubt, but its source was unknown. The research camp had been set up at the base of the mountain near the mine's entrance despite the disagreement with miners who would have to pause work, but negotiating a daily credit stipend seemed to pacify them for now. It was just a small team, started six in total, Tia included as they categorized the artifacts they found and looked for ways to extract data from ones that had a digital imprint. One piece in particular had what looked to be a power source, a team member became ill after opening it and exposing themselves to something... unnatural... to even where Tiamat and another sith assistant felt the shift in the Force. Knowing now what had made the miners so sick, the rest of the team was given strict orders on what they were able to assist with at the camp.

This left Tiamat on her own in the mine; one particular barrier to knowing who and what was here prior to the colonies was literally being blocked by a circular stone doorway. For most, sitting in a dimly lit cave would be unnerving, but for the redheaded woman, as she sat with her notes as she worked on deciphering the language etched around the frame. It wasn't quiet as most people would interpret, she was hearing whispers, a subtle corruption in the Force that she would decide when it would become a threat to her own well-being, but it seemed pleased she was present, just the woman did not know how it would react when she figured out its secret was able to go further inside.

Altair stepped back from actively engaging with people close in his life. That even included, for the first time ever, his own family. He hadn’t called Mama Din in weeks, when in the past he at least sent her a quick note every day. He hadn’t contacted his brothers in months, and his sisters for even longer. He threw himself into his work, distancing himself from anyone he knew would only weigh him down. Leeches. They were all leeches. They all wanted something from him and had nothing to give in return.

The mission itself sounded interesting enough to draw Altair to it. He was on the fence about meeting with Tia, but he knew he couldn’t keep avoiding people forever. The tiefling arrived shortly after the request was sent out.

It wasn’t long before a familiar figure would stride into the mine. While he looked similar, there was a noticeable change in his eyes and the way he carried himself. His tail wasn’t swishing back and forth, there was no warm smile or quip, it was as if this was a different person entirely but in Altair’s body. It would be almost an unsettling reminder of another figure in her life that shifted personalities while externally appearing the same.

“What have you discovered so far?” He asked calmly as he looked at her, not bothering with the formalities. She would notice his normal accent was missing, replaced with a sophisticated Basic dialect.

Tiamat felt a familiar presence but when he physically arrived, she nearly had to do a double take, uncertain if the tiefling that entered the mine was the same she had known before. He didn't say anything right away, the redhead's eyes scanning Altair quickly to make sure he was who she thought. His tail was still, his eyes did not carry the same cheery warmth it once did, nearly giving her the feeling he really didn't want to be present, or at least conflicted on if he should be here or not. He did speak at least, asking what she had found out so far; his questioning was calm, straight to the point...

By the gods of all the Corellian hells...deja vu...

Was this a punishment? Something the Force thought it was funny?

She swiftly snapped shut her journal, lips pursed together tightly and she let out a exhausted sigh as she tried to push away the annoyance she would be dealing with this now. She just hoped she wouldn't regret it...she probably would though.

Jumping to her feet, she carried on, "I think I have it figured out to at least get this thing open, so you're just in time." she said pretending not to notice his change, besides, there were greater things to worry like what lied behind this door, and how much had the Empire burned her homeworld so far. "Those lines are a dialect of aurebesh, something seen before the old Republic, thousands of years ago. Its fascinating to see how short hand was combined and eventually adapted into distinct communication systems, we don't even realize that our own speech will be considered a dialect even as short as a hundred years from now." she said, glancing at Altair, hoping for one of his quips before returning her attention to the door. The woman pulled out a tool to scrape away dirt just below where the words ended and revealing a lever.

"Its a warning, what I was able to piece together there is something here that was killing off the colonies that had originally settled. Whatever it is, this barrier has weakened, making the miners sick and I don't think sealing it again will fix it." Tiamat explained pulling down the lever and stepped back, grinning wide to see it had worked. The outline of the door glowed blue and faded, unsealing it before it retreated downward into the floor and disappeared. She grabbed illuminators from her bag so they could see in the dark corridor, handing one to Altair.

"So...how is Eiattu?" she asked trying to make small talk albeit awkwardly.

Unlike normal, where Altair likely would have made some joke about her ramblings, he stood in complete silence. It was difficult to read what was going through his mind - he didn’t even have his familiar glazed over look when it was a topic he didn’t understand. He simply stood still until she finished speaking. His gaze flicked over to the door that glowed and began to rumble open.

“What kind of sick? Poison?” He asked after a few moments, his gaze fixed on the dark corridor. He grabbed the illuminator, ducking his head to adjust for his horns fitting through the doorway. Altair followed behind Tiamat, hearing her question as they pressed ahead.

“Prospering,” He said simply in response, “The Priamsta finds me agreeable as King, so I’ve had little resistance to my rule,” Altair explained.

He could feel the Force pulse the further he walked. While he normally would have asked a few more questions or asked about Tiamat herself, he said nothing for now.

The woman didn't answer his question immediately on what was making folks sick, she knew it was in relation with the dark side that resided here. His response to her question about Eiattu was short and to the point, not adding any additional information. Tiamat frowned to herself while her back was to Altair, it was good to hear his kingdom was doing well, especially with the transition. She hoped it remained that way, "Good..." she whispered and paused in her thought, stopping herself from speaking more as she thought about her own home. Quickly she brushed away the topic from her thoughts.

Eventually the narrow entrance opened to a wider corridor, giving the two them more space to walk as their path wind and turned further into the mountain. The lack of organic presence was evident, their foot prints were the only ones left in the dust and dirt. She stopped to look closely at the walls, noting the deep narrow grooves in the wall, "These look like saber marks." her nose was nearly touching the stone wall as she tried to see as well as she could with the minimal light. Running her fingers along the grooves she let out a sigh, mentally noting the discovery before continuing.

"So how is Altair?" she asked curiously, "Or is there a new name you wish for me to address you as?" eyebrows rose, her gaze catching the light that reflected in his eyes from the illuminators. She wondered if his pain was so great if he decided to separate himself, this was not a side of him she was familiar.

“Saber marks?” Altair asked, surprise seeping into his tone, “There should be none of that here,” He mused aloud as he followed her. He already began to have a sinking feeling about this. A part of him was almost disappointed - he was getting tired of chasing down rogue Force using groups. Every day he made more enemies with Jedi and other cultish Sith. It was only a matter of time the two groups clashed.

Altair stopped in his tracks at her question. He didn’t answer immediately, his knee jerk reaction to scoff at the idea. He was no Darth, but she knew that. Altair looked at her and studied her quietly, and she would know a lot of things were being processed internally. His gaze seemed to pierce through her and it was far from the warm or casual looks he held before. Why would she ask him the question? His mind ran through what he knew of her thus far. His eyes grew slightly wide.

“Your name is not Tiamat.."

Tiamat frowned hearing him suggesting there shouldn't have been any. "Well...I don't want to meet the creature who made them then." she whispered to herself.

Regardless as they continued and Tiamat had posed her question about his persona, it seemed to have cause him to pause, literally. It took her a second to realize he was not beside her and she too stopped and then turned to face him. She knew him well enough thus far that he was thinking, thoughts connecting to old and new ideas as his gaze seemed to look past herself. However, it was then something connected for him as he declared her name was not in fact Tiamat.

That was an odd thing to hear out loud for anyone and her own serious demeanor remained as such as to even how she should answer that. No one had ever questioned it, it was who she was known as, an identity she had built from the dirt. She let out a quiet exhale, eyes falling to the dark floor briefly before looking back at him. "I have several names." she finally stated, which was fact, "Tiamat is one of them, I was also once called the Eternal. Anat Asteria is my business pseudonym, and then there is my birth name." Tiamat paused, she had not uttered that name in years and in some way, she feared speaking it out loud as though it would call her forward and everyone monster that followed her would come also.

She was quiet again, but decided to dig through her pack for a moment to distract herself from this conversation and pulled out a small spider-like droid. She switched it on, a small albeit powerful flashlight illuminated its path as she connected its signal to her holopad before letting it go forward. "I don't like these marks..." she said touching the grooves on the wall again, knowing she was trying to change subject.

Altair stared in silence as she listed off the aliases others knew she had. He had known about both Eternal and Anat, and she knew that as well. However, she stopped short of her birth name, the name he was curious about. The tiefling continued watching her as she promptly changed the topic, a faint grin tugging at the corner of his lips. Others could filter what information came to him and put up their walls to protect themselves, but when Altair did it, he was allegedly difficult. He made his point and he didn’t ask her further questions, nor did he offer any information of his own.

“Let’s hope I fit through the paths,” Altair mused aloud, changing the topic as well and no longer dwelling on the one from before. He ducked his head as he continued walking, the points of his horns scraping against the walls.

The path began to descend and it was difficult to see outside of the focused light of the flashlights. Altair felt uneasy and the air was thin, “We’re confident this all can’t collapse on top of us?” He asked, thoroughly unamused.

She felt herself relax after he spoke, signally he was not going to press it further. Questions floated through her mind as to why he wanted to know. No one ever wanted to know, Tiamat is known because she made it so. Did the past matter? Maybe if it were galactic history, but for herself, it seemed insignificant. If anyone were to remember her, she would want them to remember what she accomplished in space travel, not the child who was forgotten about.

Silently, she watched the holocam on the droid, Altair musing about if he could fit or not and she glanced up at him, sharing the worry as she could see his horns still rubbing against the ceiling of the cave, finally coming to a stop when he mentioned the whole place coming down on them.

"No, I'm not, it definitely has gotten narrow. Maybe you should go back." she watched as her small droid stopped, "This goes for another 20 meters or so..." she glanced up at him, "I don't want you to get stuck or scuff your horns," she then grinned to herself, "And we don't need the King to get stuck in here if anything comes down." she placed her palm on his forearm, squeezing it gently, signaling her quip was more serious. "There's another door not to far ahead, see-" she showed him on the holocam feed, "It looks like a door is open. I'll check it out." She caught his violet eyes, studying him closer, waiting for his decision.

Altair was surprised by her reaction, though he began to feel the corridor closing in around him. He blinked at her, his tail swishing back and forth with his indecision, “Very well,” He said curtly after a moment of silence. Only his eyes betrayed that he didn’t favor this idea, but externally he would say nothing about that.

The tiefling waited in silence as she went ahead. He expected to hear some rumblings and noises to signal her getting through the door, but he didn’t hear anything for a while.

“Tiamat?” Altair called out, ducking his head to try and peer in. He couldn’t see anything so he shined his flashlight, “Tiamat!”

She could tell he was not too keen on the idea, his tail swishing in silence before agreeing to her idea and Tiamat moved forward in the tunnel feeling the Force as she did for any sudden changes. Despite the risk, Tiamat didn't see it as nearly as risky as some other things she has done, but remained cautious nonetheless. The woman caught up with her droid, picking it up to deactivate it, and returning it to her bag. The entrance, despite the door being open, was mainly blocked by fallen stone, the tunnel collapsed sometime ago, she would need equipment for further exploration. However there was something else that caught her eye as the illuminator reflected against the wall. She reached out and pulled, the lever remained hanging down, but would not return to its place in the wall when she pushed it back up.

The tunnel then echoed with the calls from Altair; a part of her was concerned he didn't go back, but at the same time she was relieved he stayed to wait for her to return. She internally kicked herself for such conflicting feelings, questioning her own judgement and wondering if she tried to spend too much time with him, therefore leading to this continued internal conflict. He had made it clear he did not share the same romantic feelings, and try as she might either through distance and denial, she couldn't shake her emotions and wished he would know just how much she cared about him even through whatever it was he was going through. However, that would mean opening up again, and she did that already, only to find embarrassment and humiliation.

Even now she kicked herself from dwelling on such thoughts as she returned to Altair, feeling herself grin as she saw him as soon as the illuminator light hit him. But it would be short lived as whatever it was she touched earlier, made itself known. The tunnel rumbled and there was a loud metallic banging from behind the walls, the grooves she was concerned about earlier suddenly illuminated with a blue light, etching out geometric designs in the walls. It was a sight to behold, but it would also reveal something else. What she thought were rocks no longer looked like rocks as they rose to their feet: a mix of droid and stone, the same blue glow ran through the hoses connected throughout its body seemed to power them as they tore themselves from the walls.

It would be also the dark side seemed to expand around her and Altair as more stone beasts woke. "Oh, this is not good." she said grabbing his hand and in the other hand grasping her saber as they needed to leave quickly. The stone-like droids wouldn't recognize her or Altair, as their old masters had perished ages ago.

Altair was about to call out her name again when he heard rumbling and movement. He started to stick his head through the entryway when he spotted Tiamat bolting back towards him. His horns were briefly caught and he had to wiggle his head out, almost toppling backwards as she grabbed his hand.

“Tia what-” He barely managed to get out before he heard some unnatural groaning from inside the path. He could hear heavy, thundering footsteps and a mere glimpse of glowing lines along stone figures. Altair didn’t even have time to process any of this, blindly unleashing a Force blast behind him to stall whatever was chasing them.

It took them little time to exit the way they came, parts of the path behind them collapsing. Altair looked over his shoulder and then back at Tiamat, “What the fuck happened? That didn’t sound like people!”

Tiamat's eyes were wide with as much disbelief as Altair as he questioned what exactly had waken inside the mine. Despite his blast of force energy, it further destabilized the mine and she watched as it collapsed onto itself. Disappointment settled in to know that it would be next to impossible to ever reopen the paths, but what had laid asleep was not worth to reawaken. However, the natural curiosity she carried, she wanted to see more, learn more, and now that it seemed out of her reach, leaving herself to mentally kick herself for not getting more data.

"They weren't people. Well, possibly not anymore." she breathed in deeply, out of breath from the sudden cardio through the mining tunnel. She glanced at his horns to see how badly they got scuffed while in the narrow tunnels, "Are you hurt?" she asked him making sure he was okay before continuing to explain her theory.

"They were droid and possibly something else, a perversion of technology when you mix it with the dark side and alchemy." she walked over to a table where some of the odd looking metal pieces had been found and were being charted for research. The Force twisted when Tiamat grasped the spherical device, sending a surge of lightning through it to deactivate anything "living" that remained inside it.

"Some of the oldest mechu-deru practices involved combining the living with machine, and then change them with alchemy. Efficient for the time, but we may have come far enough current droids don't necessarily need that advancement." she worked on unscrewing several pieces to reach the core made of a kyber crystal, the hue of the blue liquid matching that which illuminated the tunnel before they exited.

Altair simply shook his head when she asked if there was anything wrong with his horns. The concern actually softened his expression a bit, though he said nothing about it. His hand absentmindedly glided over the surface of the horns to check for any scuffs.

As Tiamat began to explain, a look of recognition appeared on his face, “I’ve seen this before,” He said, “Vahl and I..” He began before he paused. His jaw hardened and his face took on that same stony look, “Sith Master Kahtal and I followed a cult group back to a planet in the unknown regions. The people there performed rituals to combine ‘sacrifices’ with machines, creating powerful new warped beasts.”

He paused for a moment, “I couldn’t support the practice then but…there be uses for it after all,” There was little emotion in his voice. The old Altair would always recoil at alchemy and such concepts, but nowadays he would do whatever it took to win.

“They’re unstable though,” He said as he looked at Tiamat, “There was a missing element where the free will makes them dangerous to even their creators.”

He walked with Tiamat towards the exit, still hearing some rumbling behind them.

Tiamat was surprised, she listened closely to Altair describe what he and Vahl had found, though she did not miss the pause when he spoke about Vahl. His face hardened and he addressed her formally, and the woman quirked and eyebrow, watching him closely while listening to what they had found. "Warped beasts...." she repeated, pulling out the core that sat in the fluid. Her thoughts returned to his description and looked over her shoulder back to the collapsed cave behind them.

Her mind begun to turn ideas, algorithms and numbers on how she would create one, but she wasn't nearly as versed in alchemy as others. Altair spoke again, admitting his lack of faith in such practices, but sounded like he would change his mind at this point, curiosity biting as to how he would use them to create his Empire.

Unstable was correct as they just saw with the technobeasts, she didn't agree all with free will when it came to droid, but if they were to use sentient creatures, there was certainly a cognitive element that would be a hassle.

"Behavior Modification Chips." Tiamat stated matter-of-fact, holding the crystal core "Older Empire technology but effective in creating obedience when implanted. A failsafe when that freewill becomes...overbearing." she suggested, glancing over her shoulder as the cave rumbled some more. She passed the crystal to Altair for him to examine, he would be able to feel the dark side pulse from it, "It looks like whoever created these were using kyber in their alchemy." She stepped carefully over the fissures that were forming from the destabilizing cave, she could see their exit just ahead, sunlight still filtering through. A couple guards seeming concerned by the low rumble, however Tiamat was relieved no other trouble would stop them...at least she hoped.

"They were probably unstable because you didn't have the key phrase to bring them under your command like Argorander droids." She looked over her shoulder, "These ones probably need a key phrase also."
