DESCRIPTION​

The R-28 starfighter, compared to Incom-FreiTek's other offerings, is a fairly low-profile design meant primarily to fill a niche which the company had neglected, namely that of a stalwart, low-maintenance combat ship for frontier planets and other outposts. Though hardly the only starfighter to go after this market - indeed, Incom-FreiTek faced an uphill battle against offerings by Koensayr and Subpro - it was considered perhaps the most brutally honest in its ambitions. Even its marketing boasted nothing about superior performance or high-tech advancements, focusing instead on the unit's low cost, long-lasting systems and ease of maintenance under adverse conditions. This was in contrast to the fast, flashy X-Wings and other designs in the company's catalog, which were some of the most technologically sophisticated starfighters in existence, but which were beyond the capabilities of smaller planetary militias to maintain, let alone purchase.

The R-28 is a boxy, straight-winged ship, crewed by a single pilot and equipped with 2 engines capable of propelling it to 100 MGLT. The R-28 is armed with a pair of medium cannons, which are perhaps its most interesting feature; they are dual-purpose, capable of firing either standard laser bolts or disabling ion blasts, a feature meant to appeal to law enforcement agencies. Although this would be a quite advanced feature, and is certainly a convenient one, the resulting cannons are bulky and can be temperamental; this is alleviated by an automatic weapons calibration sequence which occurs whenever the ship is powered up, as well as an emphasis on cheap, readily available components in the design, making the cannons easy to repair. The ship also carries 4 concussion missiles.

Generally, R-28s are used by the frontier militias and law enforcement agencies they were intended to equip, although they have also found a market among corporate security forces, mercenaries, bounty hunters, pirates and general fringers. Overall, the R-28 has been something of a "stealth" success for Incom-FreiTek, with overall sales of the type over the last 3 decades creeping up on the X-Wing series, although it is neither as sophisticated or as much romanticized. Nevertheless, R-28s are expected to be a good profit source for their manufacturer for years and decades to come.
