DESCRIPTION
The R-60 T-Wing interceptor is a light, fast starfighter originally developed by Hoersch-Kessel Drive Incorporated on behalf of the fledgling New Republic government, toward the tail end of the Galactic Civil War. Conceived primarily as a replacement for the vaunted RZ-1 A-Wing, the T-Wing - not to be confused with the Slayn & Korpil fighter of the same name - was to combine the speed of an interceptor with the durability and firepower of an aerospace superiority model, and in doing so supplement or replace a whole series of older Rebel Alliance starfighter types, easing logistics for the new Galactic government.

Unfortunately for the T-Wing, its development was funded by the New Republic during the later part of the Galactic Civil War; though victory over the Galactic Empire was in sight, there was not yet much in the way of funds available for serious R&D. As such, the T-Wing was developed on the cheap, and as a direct result, never was able to deliver on what the design specification called for.

The R-60 T-Wing is a small fighter, longer than the A-Wing at 12.2 meters with a fuselage reminiscent of Incom's T-65 X-Wing. The T-Wing, however, lacks the X-Wing's movable S-Foil wings, instead having 3 fixed stabilizers, each tipped with a powerful sublight engine. Its armament is similar to that of the A-Wing, consisting of twin light laser cannons firing forward, as well as a pair of projectile launchers, in this case twin 2-shot proton torpedo launchers rather than the concussion missiles of the A-Wing, giving the T-Wing comparable strike capability to the X-Wing. The T-Wing's speed and maneuverability are somewhat lacking, however; although undeniably fast, the T-Wing falls short of the A-Wing by 10 MGLT, with a top speed of 110; maneuverability is similarly decent, slightly better than an X-Wing, but again falls short of the excellent standard set by the A-Wing.

Notably, the T-Wing's hyperspace capability is somewhat neutered compared to the A-Wing. Though it still has an onboard drive and navicomputer, the T-Wing's drive is only class 3, compared to its predecessor's class 1. The navigation computer is also sub-standard, being of an obsolete type and running software that is reportedly riddled with coding errors, leading to poor efficiency and unreliability.

After being presented to New Republic evaluators, the T-Wing received thoroughly underwhelming reviews. Despite this, it was acquired by Starfighter Command in small numbers, participating in a handful of engagements at the closing stages of the Galactic Civil War. Shortly after the conflict's end, it was phased out of New Republic inventory, being sold to neutral third parties in an effort to recoup the cost of their procurement. Unexpectedly, however, the type proved quite popular among its new operators, and Hoersch-Kessel capitalized on this, reopening its production lines and offering favorable service packages. As a result, the T-Wing proved a steady seller in the immediate postwar era, used by system governments, mercenaries, pirates and other fringers, especially in the Outer Rim.

In the present day, the T-Wing is becoming a rare sight, owing to the age of the design. However, it can still be found, and can more than hold its own even against many modern designs.

LEGALITY
