The Roche Asteroid belt was, despite its friendly attitude towards travelling spacers and mercenaries, unfamiliar to Drow Venn. He'd been a mercenary in his previous life but had never had the privelege of visiting the strange asteroids, ruled by the even stranger Verpine. But, having spent the past few days here schmoozing the people that mattered and keeping an eye on the locals, he got the sense that his younger self would have enjoyed it very much. In spite of, or perhaps because of, the Verpine's strange, literal-minded nature, the cantinas were popping with entertainment, games of chance, music and all the vices that a good smuggler could ever hope to waste their credits on.

To fit in, Drow had created a persona known only as Flophat. Because he'd been technically banished from the Order (at least as far as the rest of the galaxy was concerned), the Ishi Tib Master couldn't be seen in a place like this. But Flophat could. It was a hodgepodge of moisture farmer clothes from his last mission to Tatooine and the spacer gear he had aboard his ship with a tinted space helmet covering his head so that even his species couldn't be identified. He kept his lightsaber safely hidden away in a pouch on his utility belt and he had his E-11 rifle holstered in plain sight.

Having been spending his recent days gathering intel about this place, the Verpine had pointed him in the direction of a human woman pilot named Vin. He had made initial contact with her at a casino and was suitably impressed. With a shaved head and a cybernetic eye, Vin cut quite the imposing figure already but, even more impressively, was always accompanied by at least a couple of Verpine. It seemed that she had done something to garner the loyalty of a small Verpine swarm and most of her ships were now crewed by the enigmatic insectoids. How the hell she'd convinced a whole hive to join her was anybody's guess but Drow was impressed regardless. He sat at a cantina table now, in his Flophat disguise, across from Vin who was flanked by two Verpines armed with vibroswords.

"You think your friends will recognize me?" Vin asked humorously. Flophat let out a chuckle - the large woman flanked by two Verpines made quite the sight, even in this spacer's cantina. Having made contact with Vin, Drow had told her he had contacts within the Jedi Order that would like to discuss business with her. He'd reached out to his old friend, Crix, one of the few in the galaxy that knew that Drow was still actively working within the Order and arranged a sit-down between the young Zabrak and Vin. Flophat was only acting as an intermediary and, if trouble broke out, as potential security. But the bulk of the negotiations would fall to Crix and whatever Jedi he brought along to help him.

Hearing that he was going to be working with Drow again made Crix feel slightly old - it felt like just yesterday he had started working with the Jedi Master to help secure Yavin Temple! But thinking back on it had made him realize that it had been literally years since he had last seen Drow, let alone since they first started working together.

Part of him had been concerned that it had been some kind of trap, that someone had sought to use the guise of Drow to lure a couple of Jedi into an ambush... but that was probably just a touch of paranoia. He wouldn't say it was unwarranted considering the attitude toward Jedi in the wider Galaxy but still.

It had immediately been squashed when he felt the familiar presence in the Force.

Leading Edaara across the cantina, he leaned in to speak to his fellow Jedi as they approached but before they could be heard by the Verpines and the woman, Vin.

"The one in the hat? He's a friend."
he told Edaara quietly enough not to draw attention, "If things go sideways we can count on him - but don't act like we know him for now."

As he approached, he grinned wide and bowed his head to the Verpines, Vin and Flophat in turn.

"Hello there."
he said by way of greeting, "Thank you for agreeing to meet with us. Shall we get some drinks first? Excluding our helmeted friend of course... unless you can Mando-Drink?"

Mando drink being slang for using a straw as an "emergency induction port" for drinks.

Edaara was glad to be going on another mission with Crix, even if they weren't meeting under the best of circumstances. She hadn't known this 'Drow' person, but Crix seemed to trust him, and Edaara trusted Crix.

She nodded at Crix's words when they entered the cantina. She stayed on alert but externally, remained calm. She gave a gentle smile as Crix suggested drinks. Edaara wasn't one for alcohol, but she stayed silent and waited for the other three to respond.

"I can drink" Flop hat said in the deep, autotuned voice that passed through his helmet's modulator. To demonstrate, he took a sip through the straw of his brandy.

"No problem. Flophat is one of the craziest smugglers I've ever met and he says you have an opportunity for me, then it'll definitely be either profitable or an entertaining. So tell me, what do you want from a simple gal and Verpine buddies." Vin asked with a smile on her face. Drow knew very little about Vin - she had been smuggling since a very young age, she had the loyalty of a small Verpine swarm, and she had a couple of bounties on her head somewhere - so he had no idea what the captain was looking for or what would set her off.

He hoped the two Jedi before him would be diplomatically up to the task to sway her the Order's way. Crix, he was sure of it but this stranger? He didn't know.

It was gratifying that Edaara seemed to trust him so completely - at no point did she delay their mission with questions she was entirely entitled to ask. He hadn't really explained anything, after all, and she was going along with it regardless. There was a certain amount of trust in the action that he found warmed his hearts.

"So I can see."
he joked likely as he ordered a couple of Virgin Twi'Leks from the bar droid, a popular non-alcoholic cocktail, for himself and Edaara, "We'll be going virgin this round, I fear. No religious reason or anything - I'm just a messy drunk."

He winked at Vin as he made the joke before settling himself down a little bit to get to the brass tax of the meeting at hand. Eyeing Vin as she seemed to introduce Drow and, then, herself, he hummed in the right places to show that he was listening before taking a sip of the incredibly sweet cocktail through the attached bendy straw.

Not a professional image but one he doubted Vin would disapprove of - no one who spent their time around cantinas would. No, he was willing to bet she would respond more positively to someone who was 'real'.

"Nothing simple about you or your friends."
he declared bluntly with a small smirk, "But alright; I'll bite. What's your stance on pulling the wool over the eyes of some Imperials? Tweaking their noses and getting to help people out in the mean time?"

Time to gauge just how to properly approach her but the way he wanted to do that? Was to push the idea. He turned to Edaara.

"Ed, what's your opinion on Imperial Navy discipline? You think they'd chase some smugglers if they poked hard enough?"

Edaara smiled, some part of her relieved that she would not be obligated to drink alcohol and pretend to like it. She nodded her thanks to Crix. When he asked her a question and used a nickname she'd never had anyone call her before, it took a moment for her to gather herself.

"I think they would chase anyone if they posed even the smallest threat to their precious Empire," she replied, taking a sip of her drink. It was quite fruity, and she found herself enjoying it. She had an inkling of where Crix was going with this.

"Oh I don't doubt that they'd chase me. I'm no Empire lover but normally I try and spend my days avoiding them, not poking them. The Verpine are loyal to me because I'm smart and look after them. Throwing stones at the Imps and running ain't exactly smart and definitely ain't looking out for my guys' best interests" said Vin, the smile on her face slowly disappearing. Her two Verpine companions tightened the grip on their weapons when they were mentioned.

"Yeah we're smugglers, not charity workers. You'd have to throw some serious creds her way to justify that kind of run."
Flophat said, nodding to Crix reassuringly to try and subtly assuage the Zabrak that he needn't worry about those credits. Drow did have some discretionary funds from Alex that he could use on Shadows-related manners. And sweetening this deal certainly fell under that jurisdiction. Besides, the kitchen on Ifrane didn't really need to be renovated this year, as much as that damn microwave pained Drow's daily life.

"Creds would definitely make me consider it. But how can you assure me that I'm not gonna have every Imperial and bounty hunter in this sector after me once I help you?"
Vin said, stroking her chin.

Credits made the Galaxy turn and they made people like this actually sit up and pay attention - that was good. They weren't going to be recruits into the Jedi or Resistance at all, they were here for a single job and they were going to be paid well to make sure it happened. He placed a credit chip on the table with some of the funds he had managed to gather on it as well - he was certain that it was a good going rate.

But with the credit Drow could get as well?

"This is the base pay."
he explained, passing it over so that they would be able to scan it and tell how much was actually on the credit chip and verify that it was actually a good amount, "There is a bonus available upon successfully completing the mission as well."

It was more than what most bounty hunters and smugglers could expect - a solid payday up front, followed by a bonus for making it out alive. Alongside that he reached into his pocket before handing a small device of wires and metal to Edaara. He smiled to the Jedi Knight, roping her into his sales pitch.

"Edaara, how valuable to a smuggler do you think the ability to spoof and IFF signal would be?"

As a mechanical specialist with access to the resources of the Jedi and the Resistance, Crix had the capabilities and resources to do something like make up some IFF spoofers. After all, how useful would it be to attack, say, a Sith naval force only to show up as random ships instead of your actual ship ID?

Edaara much preferred the diplomatic approach when dealing with issues. When Crix turned to her, still smiling, her own smile stayed strong. "I would assume it would be quite valuable," she replied, turning to the woman and Drow. "All smugglers want to stay under the radar," she added. She took another sip from her fruity drink and then slowed turned her gaze at the people at the table. Hopefully, this would work and not end in unnecessary fighting.

A terse few moments of silence hung in the air like the kind that occurs when a wampa is about to emerge from the snow to make its attack. Flophat stayed still but Drow's eyes inside the helmet darted back and forth bewteen the Jedi and Vin, trying to get a read on the makeshift Verpine chieftain.

"My momma always taught me to not talk your way out of a good deal. You give me those creds and the spoofer and I can send you a bank account to send my bonus credits to once the job's done. I might even kill a few Sith in your guys' honor." Vin said, winking at Crix and Edaara.

"Any of you interested in a game of sabaac?" the woman asked. Drow smiled underneath the helmet. Another victory for the Jedi Order that didn't involve him bisecting Sith? It almost felt like two victories.
