So, I start training to get my mariners license, on top of my deck hand certification tomorrow bright and early at 8am, training lasts about a week. This means I'll be on more in the evenings EST time. This is good! It means I'll see less of you bleeding Aussies everywhere. :CStern

Once that's done, I'll be heading to a riverboat company that pays exceeeeptionally well. The only downside is that I'll be on a boat with a 28 days on 28 days off schedule, and for the first month won't have the ass tons of money thus I won't be on for about three weeks.

After I get that first paycheck I'll pay off the last bit of my student loans, put a down payment on a brand new car and be buying a tablet. It has to have a good wireless 4g (or 3g) plan, because the boats as far as I'm aware do not have wifi. I'd like one that I can type on, but it's not a necessity. In all honesty everyone and their mother has been recommending the kindle fire HD which seems to have a lot of good reviews and the like but I was wondering what the SWRP thoughts were.

If anyone has any tips on car shopping, that'd be cool. This'll be the first car I've ever bought, and I'm thinking about getting a Kia Soul '13 model. It's got good gas mileage if you get the +model with eco boost tech, a pretty bangin' sound system, and an all around good reviews for a middle of the line car nothing to flashy, but certainly one that'll be nice to own and drive and what not. A friend of mine has one, and it's pretty brilliant over all but if anyone else has any suggestions I'm certainly willing to take in some good council. My price range is anything around 14k, (I'm aiming to have it paid off in under a year).

and if you order right now you'll get free air! that's right, air that you can breathe for free!

How so? Once I get my first paycheck, it won't matter if I'm on a boat or off. Also I have an excellent second in command (looking at you TAC) who I trust to keep the show moving.

And thanks Phil!

As for cars, I bought my 03 Lexus used for about 8K, and will prolly have it paid off around 2016 unless I get a better paying job. Just make sure the car you buy won't have you making payments on it that drains practically your whole paycheck.

I'm really sorry to say this sheo, but my only tip on car buying is:

YOU DO NOT ACTUALLY NEED A CAR

If you think you do, the solution is simple:

Move to a city with public transit.

Nobody needs a car.

Ever.

I beg to differ. You try living 130km from the nearest source of food.

For those of us who want to actually do things like travel or commit to their hobbies (I'm in a group that typically has me hauling quite a bit of stuff around the local areas and two-three hour drives as well), and be self sufficient enough to not have to wait on other people (or the cities) schedule, you do. Most employers of those folks who aren't living in the largest of cities (NYC, LA et cet) expect you to have a car. It's a sign that you're capable of getting to work when you need to as well as that you're stable and well rounded enough to make car payments on time, et cet. Furthermore, it's not about need, it's what I want. You look way cooler picking up chicks and having your own car than saying "Hey babe, want to come back to my place? Bus runs in fifteen minutes." For real, the advantages far outweigh the benefits and I'm someone who's lived on public transport for his entire life.

Excellent Cass, excellent we'll be able to plan smashingly then. And indeed, not planning on quitting, just going to be slightly less active for a relatively brief period of time. The rebels will still be moving strong, no worries guys. I'll make sure I have all the relevant information to you all in the think tank posted up before I take my first leave.

Well, when you put it that way...you clearly need a car.

I want to watch you try and take an Upright Bass on a bus or in a taxi, then.

Hint: it won't work. At all.

They either won't let you take it on, or somebody will get pissed and break it because it's taking up a seat.

Let alone what people will do with any other musical instrument you take on a bus. >.<

I live in a small town in Missouri. The only thing I have to do here is shoot random fruits and vegetables. Which is fun until you do it thousand upon thousands of times. I need my car to drive towards entertainment.

Indubitably.

Also Gary, you'll need to be more specific. I thought every borough except manhattan was crappy?

Anywho, any advice on tablets and the like? Anyone?

I'll murder you!!!!!!!!!!!

Naw there are beautiful places in all of the borough's. Except mine...Staten Island...don't judge.

Sooooooooo you`re saying you`re suicidal?

Might be safer to drive a car, especially in S.I.

That's funny. I live in St. Louis, and I spend most of my time trying to find some place to shoot random fruits and vegetables. They tend to sue me less.

As far as a tablet goes, I'll echo the Kindle Fire HD reviews. It's a great tablet for a good price. I have no idea what kind of service you'll get on the water, but if you do get a 3g/4g network deal, ATnT is pretty good in my experience.

I was just told most boats have wifi! and that along the River ATT gets excellent service! This means I'll most certainly always be active once I get that first paycheck.
