The orders had come through a week ago. Due to the splintering of Imperial territories and the resulting reduction in the fleet and other armed forces, Taris was to be abandoned for larger strategic reasons. It could call itself Imperial for as long as it wanted, but the fleet that had been stationed there would be moved closer to the new Imperial capital of Raxus and the Imperial Security Bureau would close it offices as well to better allocate its resources where they were more needed. Taris had been one of the few planets that hadn't known significant unrest and insurgence activities in the past months, so it no longer warranted a full complement and presence.

Levik had been furious at first. Outright livid, even, and had drafted his letter of resignation perhaps a dozen times over the next two days. In the end he had understood the logic. The Empire was fighting a war for survival against both external and internal enemies. They would need all the experienced peacekeepers and intelligence personnel there were they made the most strategic sense, and the same went for the warships in orbit.

A day before their planned departure the lieutenant-general's own star destroyer arrived. He would accept the commanding officer's resignation from their posts and formally re-assign them their next roles. It was formal symbolism and because of it both rigidly ridiculous as traditionally essential to maintain the image of an Empire. They needed to keep that image, after all, for they were an Empire without Emperor.

Commander Karn's shuttle landed in the hangar bay of the warmaster's warship and he made his way to the grand hall (which was closed-off hangar) richly decorated with Imperial banners. Imperial officers in both black and white uniforms stood at attention, waiting for the lieutenant-general to arrive. Levik stood in the front row. As the commanding officer of the Taris Peacekeepers he was there to formally resign his commission and be re-assigned. He wasn't made aware of his new role in the Empire, whether it would be a lowly garrisson commander, chief peacekeeper on a more significant world or something else altogether.
