Repulsorboots

Affiliation: Widely available throughout known space as recreational sports equipment.

Cost: 200 Credits (or equivalent local currency) for a recreational set, upwards of 10,000 credits (or equivalent local currency) for a professional sports-grade set.

Type: Repulsor-based sports equipment.

Size:
Sizes vary based on manufacturer, planet of origin, and species of wearer based on local markets, but are available to most species. Exceptionally large or heavy sentients may be unable to utilize these effectively.

Composition:
Varies; usually a combination of leather, rubber and some metallic components.

Power Supply: Universal power cells insert into a slot located above the Achilles tendon. Each boot is independently powered.

Description: Though the world of hover-based sports is filled with various different apparatus, from the hoverboard to the speederbike, from landspeeder rallies to synchronised jetpacking, none yet come close to the unparalleled lethality that comes from the Repulsorboot. Initially designed to emulate low gravity environments for the Chandrilan Opera, the prototype design was determined too unwieldy. Before long, however, daring minds uncovered the schematics, and set about creating a new type of sporting equipment for the young thrillseekers of the galaxy who were growing bored of their dull old hoverboards.

Thus, the repulsorboot was born. Little more than a pair of tall boots with several repulsorlift coils set into the rubber soles and a set of powercells, the initial design was later refined to include a set of hand controls worn as gloves. A set of complex gyroscopes and stabilizers was also developed following safety concerns that the boots were somewhat lethal to early athletes.

As a result, after several decades of lawsuits, deaths, extreme stunts and a surprisingly resilient fanbase behind Repulsorboot tournaments across the galaxy, the boots became much more commercially viable, and even began to see commercial sales as recreational equipment.

A modern repulsorboot is now a small marvel of technology - universal power cells power a series of automated internal stabilizers and gyroscopes, which moderate the amount of lift applied to several repulsorlift coils located in the sole of the boot. When active, lining inside the boot compresses against and reinforces the wearer's ankles, preventing injury from sharp or dangerous manoeuvres. Professional or competitive versions of the boots also come with control gloves that provide a manual override to the repulsors for the most daring of individuals, while a repulsor coil situated in the palm of the control glove can provide a sudden and powerful burst to prevent sudden impact with solid objects. The boots can use this same burst of lift to allow wearers to leap to significant heights as well.

As can probably be easily imagined, learning how to effectively use a pair of repulsorboots is a dangerous and difficult task that requires a considerable amount of practice, with the mortality rate in the professional championships considered rather similar to that of podracing, even after decades of safety development. However, a skilled wearer will find themselves able to repulse up to ten meters vertically from any surface, and easily reach speeds equivalent to that of a jetpack or rocket boots due to the frictionless nature of the boots. However, if there are no surfaces to repulse against, the boots are completely useless, and only professional-grade boots have any type of real protection against electrical surges - overloaded power couplings are often used on Repulsorboot courses to cut the power temporarily to unwitting contestants, who must recover from a freefall and maintain stability when their boots re-activate, an obstacle unofficially known as a Huttfall due to the amount of grace competitors usually exhibit while plummeting to their often grisly demise.

Intent: Designed as an alternative to jetpacks and rocketboots with a couple of different limitations, Repulsorboots are basically Space!inline skates, plus hover functionality. I'm also planning on it becoming the gear on one of my characters, and it's a good little addition to anyone who wants extra manoeuvrability, acrobatics or evasiveness in combat situations, or for someone who just wants to use them as sports/recreational equipment.

Also for some reason I don't have any prefixes listed when I submitted this so I couldn't add one. Maybe there's something weird with the usergroups or something, but yeah, apologies.
