The Naboo's Heaven and Hell Ball was well-known among those with wealth, status, or well-placed friends. Those who were fortunate enough to obtain tickets would gather each year, dressed in the most beautifully themed gowns and suits, and dance until the golden dawn faded into the dark blue night. Clove was one of those lucky people; the half-Annfyn had made a name for herself after Huttball, Kashyyyk, and Thyferra. One that was aided by the Vanhoop Boutique, a name that gradually but steadily gained traction among the wealthy. It took a little nagging and pulling the right strings, but she eventually got her hands on two tickets.

One for an angel, and one for a demon.

But after finally meeting Altair, any hope of bringing him vanished in an instant. Any pain, any trauma she justified for Altair was ripped open by the seam. The hope that had given Clove the drive to keep going vanished, leaving her with a pain so great it had its own gravity, pulling her down. Every day was cold and dark, and all she wanted to do was return to Yavin 8 and let the darkness drag her under. But as lost and hopeless as she felt, Clove continued moving. One small step after the other. It was all that she managed to do, but she had promised. There were people waiting for her. And so, every step brought Clove forward, beginning with the Star Guardian project, a distraction that helped her forget about the pain by focusing on something else.

But the ball kept getting closer and closer, and the tickets taunted her every time she walked past them. She couldn't throw them away, but she also refused to go on her own and bathe in the pain. Clove finally grabbed her comlink and dialed the number that had sold her the tickets; she was going to the ball, and she was getting a third ticket.

There was a reunion in the making, and this was the perfect setting.

Arctus and Ruz were each given a ticket, along with the instruction to visit Kaalina Vanhoop three times: once to measure their bodies, once for mock-up testing, and once to pick up a hand-fitted tailored suit, sewn to fit the two's desires. Clove hadn't been there for the visits or had just missed them, but she didn't mind. She knew she'd see her friends one way or another. Plus, she'd never seen Arctus or Ruz dressed in anything other than their Jedi robes. Or, in Arctus' case, his casual attire and leather jacket. So she didn't mind it being a surprise.

And at long last, the day had finally arrived. Clove's eyes sparkled for the first time in weeks as she watched herself in the mirror in the bathroom of the manor hosting the event, applying the finishing touches she should've done at home. After two hands full of scrunches in her hair to settle her curls, Clove was finally satisfied enough to leave the bathroom and approach the grand doors and two men guarding the ballroom. The half-Annfyn gave the guards her ticket, allowing her entry to the main event.

The doors opened, as they had for any other guest, revealing the ballroom, which was decorated with small flowers, crystals, an endless supply of candles, white and black curtains and other decorations. Clove slightly lifted the endless layers of petticoat and stepped into the ballroom, the purple fabric's many layers gently dancing with each step, revealing glimpses of lilac and pink every now and then. The corset, which was made of white and golden materials and resembled flower petals, shone slightly in the many candle lights, as did the crystals and shimmering fabric in her skirt and bertha. Those same candles were reflected in the gold metal of Clove's crown, along with the small beads and shimmering white metal that formed flowers, butterflies, leaves and delicate curls.

Clove's large brown eyes scanned the crowd from the top of the staircase, her hands fiddling with the top layer of her skirt. There were so many people, all dressed up in the most beautiful gowns and suits that fit the theme in some way or the other, but she wasn't looking for them. She may not have been here with the man who held her heart, but those who filled her soul with warmth were there. Although nothing would ever be the same again, and the galaxy had changed so much that it no longer felt like home... She'd stumble through the night, step by step, to get to one of the few lights in her life that had never disappeared.

Normally, Ruzaan would've resisted a highly formal invitation like this. He didn't want to visit a fancy clothing shop three times; once for a measurement, a second for a fitting, and finally to pick up something he'd probably only wear once. He felt completely out of place visiting Vanhoop Couture, but he did it for Clove.

The Togruta's dreams of a continuous, present friendship with Clove as they grew up towards knighthood together had been interrupted by several major events along the way, making Ruzaan treasure the time they had together even more tightly. The same was true with Arctus, whom Ruzaan had not seen for several months until their recent reunion on Thyferra, which had scarcely left time for a hug before the kiliks had attacked.

This fancier reunion had seemed impossible a few weeks before that, when he'd visited Clove on Yavin 8 to check in on her, only to find a shell of his friend. He'd helped her get cleaned up, and had cooked nourishing meals in between hours of simply sitting and holding Clove as she cried. His own heart had ached, too, simultaneously grieving with Clove while vowing vengeance on whomever had made her feel that way.

These more difficult thoughts, however, were banished upon entering the place and getting a glimpse of Clove at the top of the staircase in all of her radiant (and sparkly) glory. Ruzaan could barely think as he gave the guard his ticket, feeling like he was moving in slow motion as he walked through the other guests and towards Clove. He swallowed a sudden lump in his throat as nearly overwhelming gratitude for the progress she'd made since the last time they'd had significant time together flowed through him.

The Togruta stopped at the bottom of the staircase, oblivious to his surroundings. Despite everything she'd been though, there was Clove; his treasured and valued friend.

The most recent formal event Arctus was invited to was at one of his younger brothers' wedding. It had been one joyous affair, a beam of light in the bleak months the Padawan had been absent in the Order, and away from the friends he called his family. Had he not been trapped in the emotional turmoil he was trying to escape from he would have invited Ruzaan and Clove to the wedding, and have them meet the other pieces that comprised Arctus' heart.

But there were just certain things that never went his way, as evidenced by his continued absence in his friends' lives. He knew he was being a jerk for disappearing without a word and leaving them wondering and worrying if he was alright. Even more so since he didn't answer any calls or read any messages they mighg have sent. In his desire to spare them from the uncertainty and despair he felt, he had only distanced himself from them and probably made them resent him in any and every way possible.

He gave advice and reassurances that neither Clove nor Ruzaan would ever be alone and yet there he went disappearing. It was an utter hypocrisy he couldn't yet forgive himself for. But Arctus couldn't deny that the joy they felt on their unofficial reunion on Thyferra didn't give him hope. He had vanished without a word and yet there his friends were, greeting him with warm smiles and embraces.

He missed them terribly.

So when he received an invitation from Clove regarding a gala to be held on Naboo, Arctus gladly dropped anything he planned (there weren't much, really) and accepted. He met with her mother, a kind and delightful woman, and had his measurements taken for a customized suit. Kaalina Vanhoop had taken his requests into account, and he couldn't help but offer the Annfyn a (respectful!) kiss on the back of her hand once during the fitting and one more when he returned to pick up his suit.

He thought he was ready for the grandeur and formality this Naboo gala had in store for him, but once he set foot on the venue Arctus was immediately taken out of his depth. The ballroom alone screamed high-class and elegance–

...and don't get me started on the people. Why do I have to know the difference between a Naboo red and any other fancy wine? Kark, I probably look like a plebeian– nah, don't say that!

His coat swished regally after him as he smoothly breezed past a pair of chattering women, their gazes following him as he stopped by a champagne tower, one rough hand carefully swiping a glass away. Arctus was the very picture of a dashing, regal man as he lifted the glass to his lips, but the picture shattered when he downed the champagne in one shot.

You're doing great, mate!

Gee, I can't wait to meet Ruz and Clo again, all these fancy stuff be damned!

Preoccupied with his upbeat, mental pep talk and with his back turned from the grand staircase, Arctus missed Clove's, as well as Ruzaan's, arrival. Nursing the empty glass with one gloved hand, the Padawan politely returned the flirtatious smiles some of the women tossed his way. He wasn't here to pick up ladies, though.

This was a reunion of very close friends, and Arctus didn't have to remind himself to be in his best behavior all throughout the night.

Clove noticed a man in the back of the crowd with dark brown hair, an incredibly chic long black coat, and a glass of champagne in his hand. He truly looked like he fit in with the rest of the men and women. Then he drank the entire glass in one go. The girl chuckled, her head tilted to the right. It couldn't be anyone else but Arctus, and the fact that he was still himself, even at such a formal gathering, reminded her of why she adored her friends so much. But he had his back to her, so she'd have to make her way over to him. How was he doing? Based on what she was told, Arctus vanished not long after she did, presumably fighting demons as she had. She could only hope that it had been successful and that the man was doing better.

Just as she was about to take the first step down the staircase, another familiar sight caught her attention: a Togruta dressed in a spectacular suit that reminded her of heaven's light beaming from above. Clove froze, her gaze fixed on the boy. While she had only seen him briefly on Thyferra, she didn't have much time to dwell on the emotions that came with seeing him again. But now there were no distractions, nothing to take her mind off the fact that she was alive because of him. If he hadn't found her on Yavin 8... But he had. It was a debt she'd never be able to repay, and gratitude so overwhelming she'd never be able to properly express it. Clove's face lit up like the first rays of sunlight breaking through dark stormy clouds.

Clove carefully lowered herself down the stair, the layers of fabric rustling gently with each movement. Step by step she got closer and closer until she reached the end of the staircase, where Ruzaan was waiting for her. She was at a loss for words as she came to a halt in front of the soon-to-be-Knight, and for a second she could only look at him. But then she took another step closer, the petticoats scrunching together between their bodies, all the while reaching out to embrace Ruzaan tightly. The mountain of fabric in between them was slightly awkward, but she didn't mind; being able to properly hold Ruzaan in her arms was far more important. Her head rested on his shoulders for a moment as she gently squeezed him for a second or two.

"Thank you." She finally whispered, moving her head away from his shoulder to get a better look at him. "You look absolutely stunnin'! An' very sparkly, I like it." Her arms slowly lowered out of the embrace, her smile as bright as the gems on Togruta's suit.

"I found Arctus in the back, with the champagne." Clove's smile turned into a laugh. "I don't think he saw us though, let's go to him an' surprise him!" Excitedly she took the Togruta by the hand, like she had done so many other times, and began to walk past the crowd of people towards the table with the tower of champagne glasses. She ignored the many looks the two were getting; part in envy at their clothes, part in confusion at seeing two relatively young beings at such an event. While she didn't mind getting some attention for her dress because it meant her mother's creation was getting some attention, she wasn't there for them. She was crossing the sea of people to get to Arctus.

Once they got closer, there were plenty of women staring at Arctus, many of them with flirtatious giggles and smiles. Clove smirked at Ruzaan, nodding to one of the ladies as if to say, 'look at that, head over heels for him.'

Ruzaan's suit wasn't one that he'd have chosen himself, but he had to admit that it went well with his skin tone while also paying homage to the theme of the ball. It paled in comparison to the spectacle that Clove was, but he didn't mind; their embrace filled in a little part of him that he hadn't realized was missing. "You look radiant" he said, blinking back tears threatening to spill out of his eyes. "I'm so, so glad that you're..." Alive? Here? Smiling? He wasn't sure how to end that sentence so he didn't, instead following Clove over to where Arctus was the center of attention. The scene was enough to bring Ruzaan back from his spiraling thoughts, and a smile crossed his face.

"You sound surprised!" he teased her, thinking back to their vacation a long time ago, where Arctus had spent the majority of the time dodging the affections of a particular girl. He also noticed the jealous glances said ladies were throwing in Clove's direction; her dress had stolen the show.

"Arctus, it's great to see you!"
Ruzaan called out and greeted the older Padawan, pleased as anything that the three of them could relax together again.

The longer the flirtatious stares and giggles lingered, the more Arctus took interest in the champagne tower in front of him, a slightly dopey smile tilting the corners of his lips upwards. Normally he would have preened and basked in the attention, but he didn't accept Clove's invitation just to parade around like a model in the hopes of snagging a date or two. It didn't mean that he wasn't a bit tempted, though; not when more than one woman have begun batting her eyelashes at him.

"Great ball, yeah?" he asked no one in particular, trying to ease both his nerves and awkwardness. He handed his empty glass to a passing waiter and fully faced the small group of women whose attention his appearance somehow managed to catch. The rhetorical question earned him even more giggling, until one of the bolder women gestured at his black ensemble.

"Not your typical angel in a white suit, yes?"

Arctus turned his attention to the Echani and swept one gloved hand over himself, the black coat draped over his shoulders swaying with every move and revealing more of the form-fitting three piece suit Kaalina Vanhoop had made for him. While the woman was correct in the context that angels could also wear dark colors, the crimson tie that stood out against the sea of black that the Padawan wore ultimately spelled out his allegiance in accordance to the ball's theme.

He would've gone for a more extravagant interpretation of a demon in a suit but Arctus chose to be subtle and not at the same time. Taking his suggestion into account was what endeared Clove's mother to him – he wouldn't be surprised if she went along with his own and be good friends.

"Oh, my–! Ladies, steer clear, we have a demon on the loose!"

With a charming smile and a quick wink Arctus politely excused himself from the gaggle of giggling women, turning to face the grand staircase just in perfect timing to his dearest friends' arrival.

The very first thing he noticed was how accurate Ruzaan and Clove exemplified the ball's theme. Ruz' suit and Clo's ballgown screamed Heaven, as emphasized by the former's suit appearing as if the very heaven's light shone down upon the earth and the latter's corset that resembled flower petals and the combination of crystals and shimmering fabric of her gown. And as he watched the pair approach, their arrival garnering many looks that displayed a myriad of positive (and hints of envy) emotions, Arctus was reminded yet again how lucky he was for having been befriended by two, unassuming but very kind and compassionate angels.

It reminded him of a book he once read, starring an angel and a demon, and an unlikely friendship that spanned six whole millenia–

Arctus' smile, reminiscent of the sun as it broke free of the clouds, widened at Ruzaan's greeting. He didn't manage to catch up on what his friends have been up to during his disappearance when all three of them were present in the defense of Thyferra, but now...

Now all three of them have all the time in the world. Away from the fighting, the chaos, and the new threat the galaxy faced.

Arctus placed one gloved hand over his heart and bowed deeply in greeting. The same hand over his heart swept towards the two as he rose, and without a word the former smuggler closed the distance between them to pull both Ruz and Clo in a bear hug – though he remained mindful so as not to ruin Kaalina Vanhoop's creations that they were wearing.

"I've missed you both so much," he whispered to them, voice breaking just a tiny bit. He wasn't gonna cry, or at least not yet. Not when all eyes seemed to be drawn on the three of them, but Arctus felt that he didn't much care if the ball's attendees were staring at them in awe or something else.

The only thing that mattered was that his friends, his siblings, were here.

Clove smirked at Ruzaan, a little taken aback by the tease; he wasn't the type to quickly tease or joke. But then again, times had changed. And Ruzaan becoming more confident in himself and relaxed enough to tease was delightful. "Only slightly surprised!"

Her smile grew even wider when he saw Arctus turn around and look at the two while his face became as bright as the many candles. He looked great in his black suit, with the large dramatic swooshy jacket and the eye-catching crimson tie. Without a doubt, a demon or a fallen angel. No, Ruzaan was right, it was no surprise that the women fell for the ex-smuggler.

Arctus bowed regally with his gloved hand above his heart as Ruzaan greeted him. Clove wasted no time in giving her own greeting, a curtsey she had always wanted to do. She bent her knees and slid her right foot backward, almost kneeling on the ground. Her gown spread out beside her on the tiles, each layer of petticoats and fabric engulfing her in a sea of purples, lilacs, and pinks. It was extra, but rules be damned! She rose to her feet gracefully, her back straightening, but before she could return her gaze to Arctus or Ruzaan, she felt Arctus' arm embrace her, dragging her closer into a tight bear hug with Ruzaan.

Clove exhaled sharply as she felt the warmth of the two Jedi, her arms curling tightly around both of their backs. Her lights in her life, back in her arms. A family formed not by the Force, titles, or blood, but by pure love and loyalty to one another. "I missed you both so much as well." Clove whispered, her voice trembling like Arctus' while small tears of happiness began to form on her eyelids. "So, so much."

The half-Annfyn had no idea how long they had been embracing, and she didn't mind the stares when they finally began to lower their arms again. Clove took a step back, just to make sure neither Jedi were crushed by her dress, and began to flutter her hands in front of her cheeks and eyes. "Force, I can't cry now." She laughed, her ears cheerfully bouncing up and down. "I just got my make-up done for the first time in ages!" It's been a long time since she's been this happy, the last time being on her birthday—No. Don't think about that.

Clove shook her head, as if shaking the memory away, and looked around the ballroom. "You know, I forgot to ask if either of you can dance when I invited both of you." Her large brown eyes darted up to Ruz's greys and Arctus' hazel greys, her lips curled into an amused smile. "Can you?"

This had to be one of the best hugs in Ruzaan's life. The galaxy was large, dangerous, and complicated; he had friends all over, and rarely were they close enough that he could hug them. And when it came to friends like Clove and Arctus, well, he just didn't want to let go. He probably would've broke down in happy/grateful tears if Clove had not brought up the topic of dancing, which took him back to a very stressful mission he'd had not too long ago on Nar Shadda. Images of daaaaancing Hutts came to the forefront of his mind (@llamallove), and that was enough to distract him from the emotion of the reunion. The comforts and closeness his dear friends was so far removed from the dirt and desperation of Nar Shadda...

"I think I can" he said, grateful that he was sober and in control of his body this time. He'd manage to avoid stepping on any feet, but it would be clear to a casual observer that he was working harder than one was supposed to for a simple ballroom dance (Roll 8/20). He supposed that his friends wouldn't care, however, and his face bore the joy of being able to relax in the presence of loved ones.

"So, Arctus, Clove; what have you been up to?" he asked at an opportune time.

He didn't want to let either of them go. Not that he was afraid that they would drift away, that this whole thing was just an elaborate dream, and that he would wake up all alone his room in that lighthouse he'd once taken refuge in. But their warmth and joy in this happy reunion of three assured Arctus that they were here, that this was all real. He held his dear friends for a moment more, until it was time to relinquish his hold.

He didn't want to let them go, but he had to or else the tears that he fought to keep at bay would begin to fall unheeded.

Arctus chuckled at Clove's remark about her make-up, even coming up to fan a hand over her face for comedic purposes. The man himself had to rapidly blink his tears away, and at the half-Annfyn's mention of dancing he stood a little taller, prouder, a smug grin now adorning his face.

"I can't– well, couldn't. I had to learn because I had to attend a wedding!" he reported, hands smoothing over the lapels of his coat. The former smuggler then slid said cloak off his shoulders, and handing it to a passing waiter with a reminder to please look after it for a bit. Arctus couldn't help yet another laugh from escaping them when he realized that all three of them would dance together.

"You'll do great, Ruz, don't worry!" Arctus encouraged the Togruta with a bright smile. One of the older Padawan's hands settled on Ruzaan's upper back, while the other found purchase on the small of Clove's back.

They would just have to settle for a three-person waltz so no one would be left behind. He would never complain though – not when all three of them were having fun together again.

"Normally I'd say not much," Arctus began in response to Ruzaan's question, an open and easy smile on his face. Careful not to step on the Togruta's toes or the hem of Clove's gown, the former smuggler's hands would slide from their backs, finding each of his friends' hands and twirling them once. "But right now I'm planning to build my lightsaber. Been askin' the Knights and Masters 'round the Temple where to find a kyber crystal as soon as I returned there. Before all that came the great depression, though. It's, er, why I vanished."

He would keep his answers simple, for now. All the deep and painful stuff, the things he truly wanted to tell them as to why he left would have to wait.

Clove laughed happily as Arctus helped her in fanning her face to prevent her make-up from being completely ruined. And, thankfully, both men knew how to dance, which relieved her ever so slightly. Although she didn't mind if they couldn't dance, a fancy ball was the best place to learn. Like pushing a child into the water to learn how to swim. Although far less cruel. And deadly. You know. Perhaps learning by being thrown into the deep end wasn't the safest option.

Regardless, it was no concern. Clove felt Arctus' hand on her small on her back, or at least on top of her spine's metallic plates, and Ruz's hand in hers. She held Ruz's hand and placed her free hand on top of Arctus' shoulders, forming a three-person circle. She'd never done a three-man waltz before, but she was clearly having a good time. Clove swirled through the ballroom as elegantly as she could with her large dress and her still-recovering legs, a relaxed yet cheerful smile on her lips.

Ruz asked what they'd been up to, and Arctus explained where he'd been while giving both of them a twirl, a twirl that got her to laugh carefree for a moment, her hair swooshing and dancing along. His explanation as to what he's been doing caused her gaze to linger on Arctus for a moment. She knew he'd left, but hearing him refer to "the Great Depression" caught her off guard. Poor man, and Ruzaan for being alone for so long.

"You seem to be doin' much better now," she said softly. It was clear that this was not the place to go deeper, and he kept himself vague for a reason. So she wouldn't push it and leave it at that. "A new lightsaber sounds exciting! What color blade?"

"As for me,"
Clove hummed after Arctus finished speaking. "I've hit some type of great depression myself, thankfully Ruz helped me get out of it. I left the order an' now I'm working on buyin' or rentin' a buildin' to start creatin' my own hospital!" Clove spoke with a clear mixture of emotions flowing through her, but it ended with her looking relatively at ease.

Her gaze then moved to Ruzaan, who was doing his best to dance as well as he could. To his credit, he was actually dancing quite well. He just looked a little more tense than Arctus or herself. It was endearing to see, and it made her smile even wider. "How about you, Ruz? You fought like a pro on Thyferra!"

Ruzaan couldn't suppress an audible "oooooh" as Arctus mentioned building his own lightsaber. A surge of excitement raced through the Togruta- his friend was embarking on one of the oldest and most sacred traditions that the Jedi Order had. He was about to ask what color crystal Arctus had in mind, but Clove beat him to the punch. "That sounds awesome, Arctus!" he said, beaming. His smile faltered slightly as the former smuggler alluded to some mental health struggles, but Arctus didn't seem keen to go into too much detail right now.

Clove's news was less surprising; he knew of her struggles surrounding leaving the Order and New Alderaan, inasmuch as he'd been able to glean from between her sobs, but even so his hand gently squeezed hers when she finished. "You're going to help so many people, Clove. I just know it!" he said, earnestly. His heart ached for the future he'd envisioned with them growing up through the Order together as friends, but Clove was on a different path; he was going to be proud of her no matter what.

Clove then asked about him, and the Togruta tried not to blush as she praised his performance on Thyferra. He'd been part of a group that had rescued the Cadir from the Kiliks, and Ruzaan had managed to escape from the battle unscathed where many had not. Clove was not the first to point that out, and the Togruta almost didn't believe the words even as he spoke them. "I... uh... I'll be Knighted soon, or so I've heard" he admitted, face burning. It felt weird, making it to Knight without ever having been taken as a Padawan, but he had to admit that he had grown substantially more capable in the past year. Even if he wasn't ready for that step... part of him was.

Anxious to turn the conversation away from him, he glanced back towards Arctus. "How about you, Arc? I'm sure you've got to be getting close, too! There's more to being a Jedi than fighting, but you also kicked lots of ass!" His language, coarser than the setting called for, drew a few shocked glances, but Ruzaan didn't mind. The only faces and opinions he cared about were Clove and Arctus.

Arctus was both grateful and relieved that neither of his friends decided to prod him about his struggles with mental health. As ready as he felt right now to tell them, he also didn't want to kill the good vibes they all shared by pouring his heart out. There was a time and place for it – and while this could count as a place the timing remained off-key, so he would wait.

Was he doing better? The Padawan's smile softened, searching his feelings and finding that he was indeed doing better. He had been denying himself of the help he knew he needed and right now he knew that he should let go of his self-imposed restraint when in came to his own troubles. Reaching out and asking for help when he couldn't bear it any longer – wasn't that why he looked for a Jedi and joined the Order all those years ago?

A look of genuine worry then crossed Arctus' face when Clove mentioned that she had been on the same spot as him, though it was quickly replaced by gratitude and relief when she said that Ruzaan had been there for her. The thought alone set the Corellian's heart at ease. While he might not have been there for Clove, he was glad that Ruzaan was there for her; that the two of them were there for each other. He didn't know exactly what had caused Clove distress due to his own absence, but knowing that Ruzaan had been there to help her get through it made him feel happy. They were really great friends, and Arctus was thankful to have them in his life.

Mirroring the Togruta's sentiments, Arctus flashed the two a bright, proud smile. "You two are goin' to be so great. I know you're going to help a lot of people – knew it since Drastus' potluck. You're gonna do great things."

And he believed in his words, believed in these two. Despite leaving the Order Clove never wavered on her dream and desire to help people, and close to Knighthood as he was Arctus knew that Ruzaan shared the same vision. The Togruta and the half-Annfyn were a genuinely good pair. Arctus could not be more proud of them.

"You were both badasses on Thyferra!" exclaimed the Corellian, earning the three of them even more stares and excited whispers. "And yeah! Ruz kicked a lot of killik ass and even succeeded in getting the Cadir to safety!" If Ruz had hair on top of his head Arctus would've ruffled it, but he settled for shooting the Togruta a proud grin instead.

"I heard later that a hive queen was controlling the killiks and that Councillor La, some Sith higher-up, and Thorne's droids brought her down. Man, that's crazy stuff."

If only he'd seen what Nirn Saron had looked like, Arctus wouldn't have been able to fight the temptation to call the queen "Mommy". Fortunately he and the others were too focused on saving the Cadir Gyxik to be hanging by the battlefield.

Pink spread across the Padawan's face and to the tops of his ears as two pairs of eager eyes flit back to him. Thoughts of Knighthood, kicking ass on Thyferra like his friends did, and kyber crystal color still haven't properly crossed the Corellian's mind, and while he was taken aback by Ruz and Clo's questions he couldn't help a sheepish bark of laugh from escaping him.

"I dunno about any mentions of Knighting me yet, but if there's even one whisper – great!" he admitted, adding, "But I don't feel... ready for it yet. Someone suggested for me to take the Trials so I'll be able to really gauge myself about Knighthood. I intend to take up on it.

"I don't really have a preference for the kyber and blade color,"
Arctus said with a smile, joking, "just not pink, though. I don't have anything against the color, though! I mean, look at me, all rugged handsomeness and oozing sex appeal-slash-charisma. And then I ignite my lightsaber then pink plasma shoots out. The contradiction would be hilarious!"

Clove couldn't help but blush slightly and smile wider when Ruzaan lavished her with praise. In truth, leaving the Jedi order to pursue her own passions had been terrifying; not only had she left her second family, but she had also been thrust into the unknown. But, while she'd lost almost everything, she'd never lost her closest friends. Sure, she couldn't walk by their dorm rooms anymore, but they could still meet up! And Ruzaan's praise felt like confirmation that what she did was the right thing to do. Arctus' praise only made her cheeks burn even more. "You two are too sweet!"

And then Ruz' mentioned he was about to become a Jedi Knight. Clove's eyes widened, and she smiled as she squeezed Ruz's hand. "Oh my stars, Ruz! That is amazin'! You'd be an incredible Knight. Oh, I'm so happy for you! You better give me an invite to the ceremony!" She couldn't linger in the compliments for long, as Ruzaan became uneasy and turned the conversation to Arctus. Something that, by now, was a tale as old as time. Even at the Potluck where they'd met, Arctus was thrown under the bus.

The people's stares and Arctus' exclamation didn't bother her; she was too focused on the two to notice the stares. Instead, she began to laugh happily, albeit a little shyly. "I haven't seen the actual fight, but I did see some massive bomb markin's when I carried Councillor Zak back to the ships! It looked like a proper war zone!"

Her attention had now been drawn entirely to Arctus, who had mentioned the trials in the most humble sense. It was refreshing to see somebody so grounded. "It's a good idea to begin with the trials! It's easy for us to say you're ready, but it's up to you to feel an' be ready. So puttin' it to the test is very clever!" She smiled.

She puffed her cheeks in obvious jest in response to the man's humourous rant about the pink lightsaber. "Oh, come on! There's nothing wrong with pink! You've seen my pink combat coat! An' it's a badass!" She stopped the act with a snort and some more lighthearted laughter. "Nah, you are right. It wouldn't work for you. Honestly, I can see you rock a yellow blade. No idea why."

"Gosh, there aren't enough words to express how nice it is to have you both here."
Clove exhaled a long, contented sigh. "You two are truly the light in my life." It was upfront, but she didn't care. She had nothing left to lose after everything, and she was done hiding her emotions. She genuinely cared about these two, and they were going to know it.

The music changed just as she was about to launch an endless wave of sweet words for the two. It became a much more upbeat waltz, and men and women in the ballroom began to link arms and glide across the dance floor at a speed that matched the song's rhythm. Clove let out another joyful laugh and quickened her own steps, dragging the two along among the faster-paced song. Partly because it was fun, and partly because they had to, to avoid bumping into everyone else. Clove's head was swaying with each turn, and this faster-paced waltz seemed to be going much better for her.

Although he'd alluded to significant struggles earlier in their conversation, Ruzaan was pleased to see that Arctus appeared at ease- happy, even- in this context. Ruzaan had come to expect a certain hesitancy from his friend, as if every word from his mouth was filtered not once but twice, but there was an easiness about Arctus' presence here that the Togruta hoped signified more comfort in himself. "I bet you could still pull it off!" Ruzaan teased the former smuggler. "But yellow would be an awesome color for you, too!" he agreed with Clove. "I know how you feel about not really feeling ready, though. Every time someone says something I have to pinch myself. Some days it's easier to feel like that's a step I can take then others."

The Togruta's smile returned as Clove expressed her gratitude for their friendship. "Thanks, Clo" he said. "Ditto. I don't know where I'd be if it wasn't for you two." He would feel slightly embarrassed to tell them that when he needed to channel the Light that he thought of them for inspiration sometimes; imagining Clove's radiant smile and Arctus' endearing resilience had gotten him out of more than one scrape.

Ruzaan was all to happy to let the half-Annfyn lead their merry trio as the tempo picked up, relying on her to guide his steps while trying not to trip over Arctus. The quicker pace of the dance cut short his thoughts of further conversation, which was probably a good thing because there wasn't much on his mind anyways; just gratitude, happiness, and security, which had been in short supply recently.

The combined teasing and reassurances from his friends made Arctus blush, a short burst of happy laughter escaping him. They spoke words he wanted to hear and would always say to them, the weight and sincerity behind them sealed into a promise fulfilled that made this reunion turn into a reality. There wasn't an ounce of regret nor guilt when he accepted Clove's invitation, he realized, only a deep sense of longing for the two friends he won't ever be afraid to call family.

It wouldn't be far-fetched to say that Ruzaan and Clove's friendship helped add color to Arctus' otherwise mundane life. There were times where he doubted his place, his choices, but they remained a pair of very strong constants in his life not just as a Jedi. He'd never anticipated that out of everyone he met, he had been more than willing to let them in while at the same time being too careful not to show them his much darker side. Nor his struggles with the Dark Side, even. In truth he was afraid that it would scare them, send them away. But his return to Yavin IV made him realize that it wasn't his struggles that would push them away but his constant fear and his keeping his struggles to his own. Meeting with Faen made him realize that his decision to keep his friends partially in the dark might eventually push them away.

He accepted Ruz and Clo's friendship because he desired a genuine connection with them. He had promised to be with them, to be the rock that keeps them on their feet during the storm. And when he faced that storm himself, he abandoned them.

Arctus never wanted to do that to them anymore.

"You two. I love you. Just, uh... letting you know."

The words just slipped out, genuine and pure, with every intention to tell the two how important they were to him.

His heart full and his smile as bright as the sun, Arctus let himself get dragged into a much quicker dance as the song changed, laughing merrily as he tried to keep up with the accelerating tempo. The Corellian was confident that he could keep up, half-remembering dance lessons prior to one of his brothers' wedding. Waltz was easy, he just needed to try and keep up with this one's pace–

The former smuggler could only let out a surprised "uh-oh!" when he tripped on his own foot, swaying awkwardly on the spot as his left knee suddenly gave. His hold on both Ruzaan and Clove slipped as he tried his hardest to regain his balance but failed. Arctus fell to the marbled floor with as much grace as a crash-landing porg, but at least he hadn't dragged either of his friends along with him. The Padawan blinked, backside throbbing with a dull pain, as he looked up at his friends.

He could feel so many eyes on him. This was probably embarrassing enough but the loud laugh that slipped past Arctus' lips, cheerful and unrestrained, was a sign that he didn't feel embarrassed at all. He was just surprised that his overconfidence caused him to literally stumble and fall on his bum. Still laughing, he picked himself up and waved away worried looks and words sent his way.

"Must be gettin' old real quick if my knees start giving up on me!" he joked, face red from laughing. He held out his hands to his friends, the mirth on his face mellowing into a softer smile. "Mind sittin' with me this time? Talk about why I pulled a disappearin' act?"

Because as much as he talked himself into deciding that this was not the right place for it? Arctus really just was the type who couldn't keep things to himself any longer, not when he had finally started to actively look for help. And if he didn't tell them now, who knew when he would disappear again? He'd decided that he wanted to break that cycle right here and now, so he would start by finally telling his dearest, closest friends why he left without a word in the first place.

When Arctus admitted he loved them, the half-Annfyn's large chocolate brown eyes lingered on his hazel greys. Her expression softened into one of pure gratitude. "I love you two as well." She said without thinking about it, allowing her soul to speak instead. It was true. She loved those two unconditionally. They were the light in the darkness, and they were almost certainly the reason she was still standing here. Quite literally at that. If it hadn't been for Ruz...

The quick dance that followed was everything Clove had hoped for, and after such kind words to each other, Clove felt almost euphoric. Her hair swayed, her many layers of fabric swirly and rustling, and every tiny gem sparkled in the candlelight with each new quick spin. She felt free with her friends as if they could do whatever they wanted.

And then Arctus tripped.

Clove's eyes widened, her limbs almost instantly freezing in place. The last time she saw Arctus make a mistake, she went outside to the garden to calm him down. He couldn't accept his mistake or face his shame. So Clove was ready to shift her mind to 'helping Clove,' pull him off the ground and tell him everything was fine. But, much to Clove's surprise, the former smuggler was chuckling instead of freaking out. No, not just chuckling. It was genuine laughter coming from the tips of his toes. There was no shame, no anger, nothing. And before Clove could do anything, he waved the worries away and got up on his feet.

Her entire body began to relax and her smile returned, this time fueled by pride for the man. He had come a long way since the potluck. Then again, they all have. Ruzaan too had grown, becoming more and more the Jedi Knight he was destined to be. Clove cast a look of pure amusement at Ruz, before laughing and grabbing both of their hands. "Old man needs to take a seat, huh?" She asked playfully while looking around the place. "We can definitely take a seat. My feet would enjoy some rest as well. Hmmm. OH! I know where!"

She'd read in the papers that the manor had a room dedicated to displaying the most beautiful and antique paintings. It would be empty on a night like this because the guests would be too busy dancing in the main room; the dance floor. Clove's eyes darted around the room, spotting several arches leading to another. She must admit that it took her a few seconds to spot the room with the deep red wallpaper and the painting that could be seen peaking through the archway. "Here!"

Clove, as usual, began dragging her friends, smiling brightly as they passed through the arch and entered the miniature museum room. She walked to the farthest back of the benches in front of the paintings for the most privacy. There she sat down on the bench with a satisfied huff, her skirt poofing out and overflowing at every edge of the bench to the point where no one else could sit. "... Hm." She hummed before sliding down from the bench and taking a seat on the floor, allowing the two men to sit in front of her. "There we go! Much better."

Ruzaan grinned ear to ear when Arctus admitted his love for him and Clove. Raised in a communal living environment, he saw absolutely no problem with admitting love for friends, and as Clove echoed the sentiment he nodded in agreement and squeezed his friends' hands. This... happiness... was needed.

Once the waltz pace picked up, though, it was only a matter of time before either Ruzaan or Arctus fell. Clove handled the increased tempo with the grace of a trained dancer, but soon the trio were searching for a place to talk that wasn't on the dance floor. The Togruta followed Clove and Arctus into another room, one that was just as fancy but gave them more space to talk. Ruzaan giggled to himself at the sight of Clove's dress pooling out on the floor around her. She had to be careful or she would quite literally be lost inside the fabric.

Like Clove, Ruzaan ultimately decided to eschew the bench and sat on the floor nearby Clove, giving Arctus his full attention wherever the man chose to sit. The former smuggler seemed ready to talk about something on his mind, so Ruzaan was grateful for the privacy of the room. "Go ahead, Arc" he said, smiling at his friend. "Clove's all ears, and I'm all montrals. What's on your mind?"

Arctus allowed himself to be dragged away from the dancefloor and into a more secluded room that looked more like a museum but just as grand as the great hall. Another chuckle escaped him at the playful teasing from the half-Annfyn.

"You're teasing now, just you wait 'til you become an old lady yourself!" he joked back as the three of them slipped into the room. Arctus liked museums, and the paintings and other art pieces immediately drew the Padawan's attention. He wandered for a bit as Clove looked for a place to settle onto, until he decided that he could appreciate the art later and returned his attention to his friends. It seemed that Clove had ditched the bench in favor of sitting on the floor due to the immense volume of her gown. Ruzaan had taken a seat on the floor as well, the sight of his two friends in elegant attires sitting on the floor earning yet another chuckle from the Corellian.

The Arctus of the past would have frozen at having been put in the spotlight, and though a hint of nervous energy crept in his mind Arctus did not allow it to control him. For a moment he gazed at his friends, committing their smiles and presence into memory, before lowering himself on the of before them. Legs crossed and gloved hands clasped in front of him, the Padawan took a deep breath and collected his thoughts.

You can trust them with all your heart.

The Force sang within him, gentle and calming as lilac and azure filled his heart. At Ruzaan's words, Arctus gave his friends a soft smile, and began his tale.

"Before anything else, I want to apologize for disappearing, more so because I told neither of you the whens and whys. I didn't tell anyone that I was leaving. I should've said something, but I've been a complete and utter fool, and a coward, and just bailed on everyone else."

Arctus dipped his head apologetically, head bowed low for a moment in silence, letting his words sink in. He'd abandoned them, uncaring of the worry they might have felt during his disappearance. It was selfish of him, and no amount of trying to defend his reasons for disappearance would justify his actions.

"I don't want to bring up bad memories, but it's the only way I can explain why I left the Temple without telling either of you. In the months following that failed invasion of the Sith on Yavin IV, I..." the Corellian paused, brows furrowing lightly. "I found myself still grieving for the lost children that aren't even my own."

Arctus' gaze never left Clove and Ruzaan, hazel grey eyes unwavering even now at the thought of that tragedy. There were things that he knew he couldn't control, and during that time it was his grief and heartbreak in losing Maikee and the other younglings. He had spiralled into another cycle of depression, the price he paid for giving his heart to those kids he had jokingly called his own. He'd asked Mum what it felt like to lose a child because in a way she had lost Arctus when he chose to outright lie to her when he was still a smuggler. He'd asked Dad what it felt like to lose a child when he walked out on Arctus and the triplets. He'd asked himself why he loved those children as if they were his own, and asked if it was worth it, if he could remain in the Temple only to be reminded over and over again that they were ripped from him and that he had failed to protect them.

Even now it hurt, but Arctus refused to let the pain hold dominion over him.

"Everywhere I looked I see them, running around the Temple and laughing and having fun. Ghosts, all of them, haunting every waking moment and not giving me a sliver of peace even in my sleep. I loved them, and I have failed to protect them. Never got to see them for the last time before the Sith took 'em. I felt haunted in there. And... and seeing you," he sadly smiled at Clove, "bound to a wheelchair that time, and you," that same sad smile now aimed at Ruzaan, "lookin' so lost as you watched over Clove. I couldn't bear all of it. Even after Clove regained the use of her legs. I was depressed, hounded by the pain of seeing my friends get hurt and losing Maikee and the other kids... I couldn't bear it all. And... being haunted by the Dark Side for years, only for the voices to get quiet months after I lost the kids? I got– I got paranoid. I got so scared of losing another child, so scared of losing the both of you, so damn scared of the Dark, and instead of reaching out and telling you about all of it I just sneaked out one night and left.

"I should've told you two about it, hells, I should've left a note! But I knew that you'd be worried, and that you'd ask questions. And that's exactly what I got scared of, telling you why I had to leave. I couldn't give you that burden, of knowing that I couldn't find the strength to move forward. I didn't want to burden either of you with my problems, with my fears. It sounds very stupid now that I'm talking about it, but I felt like absolute shit that time, not even wanting to trust the friends I call siblings with my broken heart in fear of breaking yours in the process. You don't deserve any of that. So I kept it all to myself."

Arctus unclasped his hands, reaching out to hold Ruzaan's and Clove's. "I couldn't keep my word that neither of you wouldn't be alone and that I'd always be there to listen and help if you got problems. At the first signs of darkness, I left you two alone. I'll forever be guilty of that, of breaking my promise to you both. I am sorry, I truly am – for bein' a shit friend and more so an even shittier older brother. I'm sorry I hurt you and did you wrong, Ruz, Clo."

Tears pricked his eyes but Arctus refused to cry. He held his dearest friends' gazes, his expression a mix of remorse and determination to do right by them.

When Ruzaan sat down next to her on the floor, Clove smiled brightly appreciating the fact that he joined her on the ground despite his fancy suit. Then Arctus sat down as well and became the focal point of the conversation. He would never have done any of that so many years ago. Her heart pounded with pride for the former smuggler, who she couldn't believe had come this far. And this was just the beginning.

She wanted to respond to his apology, but she deep down knew it wasn't meant for her. It was for Ruzaan. Because Clove had vanished as well, barely noticing Arctus' withdrawal. Ruz was the one who was left behind on his own and deserved all of the apologies. So Clove simply lowered her head in acknowledgment, indicating that she respected his apology and forgave him, but left the actual talking to Ruz if he so desired.

The man then went on to say things that, to be honest, stung. Those children were lost because of her. Because she lost that fight, she was injured and forced to use a wheelchair. But she wouldn't back down, avoid Arctus' gaze, or show him her stinging or guilt. He was here to explain what had happened, and that was more important than her own feelings at the time. So she listened calmly and patiently to him explaining how he felt and how he was haunted by the Darkside.

It didn't surprise her that he was haunted by the Darkside; she had a feeling he was dealing with demons far more powerful than social anxiety during the Potluck.

Clove cupped his hand with both of hers. Even as he began to tear up, something she found extremely difficult to see and which made her own eyes misty, she continued to hold him. "Arctus... I'm already relieved that you're doin' much better an' that you're here with us, tellin' us what's goin' on. An' I'm so proud of you for gettin' this far." Her smile brightened as she continued to look at him. "I understan' why comin' to us with problems like that may seem impossible an' I would never blame you for that. Just know that I'll be there for you an' support you in the same way that I would for Ruz. You'll always be my big brother, even in your darkest moments." Clove turned to face Ruz, giving him the opportunity to express himself as well.

As he listened to Arctus recount his experiences and reasoning for stepping away from Yavin, Ruzaan found it difficult not to interrupt the former smuggler to reassure him. He managed to hold his tongue, though, waiting as first Arctus and then Clove spoke; even if a small part of him wondered where Clove had picked up the habit of dropping end consonants. He was more preoccupied with his guilt; guilt for not trying to find Arctus after he'd disappeared, or for not searching harder for the lost younglings, or for missing the invasion due to his own clumsiness...

It wasn't until after Clove spoke that he realized that this line of thinking would get them nowhere; the past only held as much power over him as he let it, and he was still fortunate enough to have people like Clove and Arctus in his life to lean on. "Clove is right" he agreed, nodding his head. "I understand you not wanting to talk about it"- there were things that Ruzaan struggled with that he hadn't said a word of to anybody- "but I'm also glad that you feel comfortable telling us now."

Warm grey eyes danced back and forth between his friends, noting that both of them were tearing up; Ruzaan wasn't quite to that point just yet, but it was tough to hear Arctus beat himself up like this and the Togruta didn't like it. "What would you say to us if it was me or Clove who had to take time away to focus and figure things out?" If only Arctus could see himself the way Ruzaan saw him; an inspiration as he navigated the perilous path of being a Jedi.
