Ezra was bored as he often was at these things. It was a high society charity dinner for important people and their families. He usually managed to skirt around these, but this one was unavoidable since it was on Coruscant and he was going to school here. His family was here to donate money and offer up paintings for purchase from the Outer Rim.

Cocktail hour was underway and he was sitting at his table with his chin in his palm, drumming his fingers on the surface of the table with the other hand. His dad was the sociable one of his parents and he had dragged Pops over to chitchat with the crowd. His sister was schmoozing with any new and powerful figure she met. This left Ezra sitting alone and bored. He had texted his friends, but most of them were home and away for the holidays. And this event was particularly exclusive to where even a lot of his classmates couldn’t attend.

The music was Life Day and soothing background beats, and it almost put him to sleep. Ezra checked his chrono again before he finally sighed and rose up from the table. He decided to make his way towards the hors d'oeuvres. He was dressed in a suit, sporting a flashy chrono on his wrist. His hair was styled and he wore an expensive cologne. The resemblance to his Pops was uncanny, though he didn’t carry himself with quite the same level of confidence and assertive presence.

Ezra inspected a selection of exotic sushi, wondering if any of them would trigger his allergies. He walked past it and eyed the assortment of cheeses and other snacks out for display.

This was one of the first socials she was permitted to go that her mother brought her to. A gathering of the elites of this planet, but the pressure was double for her. As class president, she had the added pressure of being Dr. Morata's plus-one. Only a fool wouldn't notice the resemblance to her mother, but it seemed most just didn't really care. She was also invited here for another reason.

The intern Senatorial trainee program.

One hour was all that was needed. She had to list the names of all the important guests, and then the highlights of her night of attendance; stuff that her mother no doubt had no problems trusting Silvi to do unsupervised. But as of late, the Doctor's daughter wanted nothing more than to get out as soon as possible. She had to fight the urge to check her chrono at least eight times; it had to be an hour already. A quick check verified it.

Brushing a hand over her dress, she glanced about to make sure her mother wasn't paying attention. Sure enough, Ilana was off to one corner, laughing with a Fondorian representative and engaging with others, her back to Silvi.

Now's my chance.

She'd have to walk confidently, but carefully. Part of her duties as a representative of her class meant she had to check the building over with security for some of the guests before rushing back home to get dressed; it may have been a charity dinner, but it was a charity dinner run by someone that had pockets with many organizations, she had to guess.

The men's bathroom in the back of the dance hall held the most promise for being able to break out, but she had to be careful not to be noticed. Nonchalantly, she began sidling past the food bar, her eyes only on one goal beyond. But there was someone standing in her way. There was a faint thought in the back of her head that said he looked familiar, but...

She couldn't quite place him. Not that it mattered.

"Excuse me?" she piped up, her voice light against the music. "Mind if I just scoot past you?" The other side was crowded with adults talking and laughing, but the dark-haired guy in front of her was the only obstacle in her way to blissful freedom. She could only hope he didn't detain her, or worse, give her conversation.

She wanted out, if only for an hour's reprieve.

Ezra glanced over when the girl scuttled over. His gaze briefly lingered on her, mind doing a few calculations to conclude that this was Ilana Morata’s daughter. The party list was exclusive after all. Clearly she lived under a rock if she didn’t recognize him by now. Ezra grabbed some cheese and crackers, “Third floor has a stairwell that leads up to an open roof,” He said dryly before stepping back and out of her way.

For a second, two seconds, she was about to walk right past the guy. After all, he was just another obstacle in her way out of her. But then, his words registered, and then it clicked. She knew where she'd seen him.

Ezra Thorne.

Wait... did that mean Daddy Thorne was around?

Force, she hoped not. She wasn't sure if she could handle herself in the face of someone so cool. Even though he was kind of old now.

Turning on a heel, she looked back at the younger Thorne, and cocked her head. A silvery tendril of hair slipped free, and she pushed up her glasses, giving him a curious stare.

The words slipped out almost before she could stop them.

"Hey, wanna get out of here? This place is... pretty lame, not gonna lie."

She knew she had a reputation already for being a stickler for rules, but... even she had limited patience with sitting around. And sharing the night with someone who wasn't old enough to date her mom would sure beat hanging around listening to people humblebrag about how much money they could throw at a charity gig. Honestly, it was beginning to make her want to just jump off the nearest balcony.

Ezra was in the process of nibbling on a cheese cube when she spoke up again. What was that nickname everyone gave her behind her back, again? Stuck Up Silvi? Monotone Morata? He studied her for a moment, surprised by the suggestion considering her entire reputation was about how by the book she was. She would probably give him some long lecture about bullshit he didn't care about if he snuck out with her.

“Unless you’re about to roleplay the hot librarian punishing an overdue customer with me, I’m good,” He said flatly, his deadpan delivery very reminiscent of Emryc, but also hilariously, her own mother as well. Ezra extended an arm past her to grab a glass of punch. He gave her a wink while he up close with those piercing eyes, “Pardon my reach,” He said before he grabbed the drink from behind her and walked off.

If she kept watching him, she would notice he paused to make brief smalltalk here and there before expertly slipping out of sight and from the dinner hall. He had been here before and he knew how to navigate the best escape routes. Ezra casually strolled through the corridors while sipping from his punch. He reached into his pocket, bringing out a flask to mix in some liquor with his drink.

It was a combination of things.

Ezra's confidence, for one. For a moment, she seemed nonplussed, her face suddenly flushing across her cheeks and the tops of her ears. But as he leaned forward, she didn't move. Instead, something curious happened.

She let out a snort.

And then, a low, silvery laugh, shoulders lifting with the sudden burst of amusement. Just as quickly as the amusement flared to life, it faded, however, blue eyes still glittered with humor.

"Didn't know you were into that kind of thing, but... good to know for later," she replied, then paused as he began to move away. Part of her still wanted to go on her continued course, but...

Shit.

Ilana was glancing over to Silvi, and perked a white brow. If she sets down her wineglass, I'm done for, she thought, feeling a sinking feeling in her chest. She didn't want to go home yet either; she and Mom fought again, about the same things. Personal safety, what she ought to do, that she didn't know what she was talking about. But... curiously, her mother merely turned away, and she exhaled in relief, unsure if that meant she had more time to kill or not.

Still...

She glanced in the direction where Ezra was going; surely the Most Likely To Advance Without Working guy would know where to escape... perhaps that was the way to the roof?

She began to mimic his maneuvering, and followed. Hell, she could just ditch him once he would get to wherever it was he was going and go her own way, this was just the best way to slip out of sight of her mother's prying eyes. After all, she'd done it many times before without her mother knowing.

Ezra normally paid far more attention to his surroundings, but he had a specific place in mind. He had been in this building before and it had several different lounges and places to entertain. He had told the Morata brat about the roof, but he had no intention of going there, at least not yet. Instead, he walked through a set of double doors, not bothering to close them behind him. He figured no one was coming this way.

After a moment, the sound of a piano could be heard coming from within the hall. Ezra was in there by himself, his fingers expertly traveling across the keys with breezy precision. The playing sounded effortless and passionate, a complete 180 from his aloof and standoffish demeanor. The room remained mostly dark, illuminated only by the city lights outside pouring in.

He was largely unconcerned by his surroundings, silver gaze fixed ahead as his fingers moved of their own accord.

For a few moments, she lost track of him, and paused. If this wasn't the way to the roof, then...?

Something caught her attention. The echo of notes, bright and yet... almost reminiscent. She turned towards the music, head cocked slightly as it seemed to come from an open door. Walking on the balls of her feet to not click heels on the floor, she crept closer, eyes adjusting to the darkness as she moved.

The sight there made her freeze in surprise.

Seeing Ezra, hearing the music, made her breath catch in her throat. Queerly, she felt a chill run between her shoulders, an ache in her chest. It reminded her of the stories of Angels, of watching snow fall or space dust catch the light of a Nubian starship. For a moment, two moments, she froze there in the dark, spellbound as she watched the pulsing lights in the windows beyond catch his silhouette and the solitary piano.

Escape was forgotten as she watched, unaware that her breathing became shallow and that her cheeks were still flushed, rooted to the spot.

It was so unexpected, so alien from the rumors she'd heard of him she was unwilling to break the silence. She began to shuffle back, trying not to disturb him. She knew all too well how it could feel like when someone broke your own privacy. However, her glasses slipped free, tumbling to the ground with a soft clatter, and she bit down onto her bottom lip to stifle a gasp, hoping he hadn't heard. But if he did... well. She'd just have to deal with it.

Ezra was entirely in his zone, playing away confidently as his fingers expertly traversed the keys. He didn’t notice anyone arriving in the room to listen. However, the clatter to the floor caught his attention, his sensitive ears picking up the noise. He stopped playing at once, his head whipping around to spot a figure standing in the distance. Ezra wasn’t happy anyone heard him play - he kept this mostly private - but it was already done.

He gently closed the piano fallboard and rose up from the seat. He slowly walked towards the figure, his arms crossed. Though his face remained impassive, amusement danced in his eyes in whatever low light she could make him out. He briefly paused to pick up her slightly cracked glasses and hand them back to her.

“You following me, Morata?” Ezra asked quietly.

She didn't move, primarily because there was no point to, but secondarily because of how he walked towards her. Stiffening her spine, she crossed her arms beneath her chest, trying to seem as collected as possible. But when he got closer, he would see the flush deepen on her face and neck. For some reason, she had the feeling she'd done something very wrong.

In a streak of stubbornness, she opened her mouth to utter a retort... until she noticed he handed her glasses back to her. She didn't even need them; truthfully, she would have left them if she had the chance to vanish again. Blinking, she took them back, then cleared her throat softly.

Ezra had always been in the periphery of her sight in school. She never really understood why other girls fawned over him, or why he could seem to not care about his studies. In her mind, she had to slave to break free of her broken family's expectations; to not try at something felt inherently wrong to her. And yet, seeing in him that passion, that focus and skill, made her realize...

She was wrong.

Giving him a small smile, she fiddled with the glasses, before tucking them into a hidden pocket. "I was at first," she confessed, then glanced back behind him, to the piano. "But I heard the music... that was incredible." She hadn't realized her voice had gone soft, arms tightening around her waist. "I wish I knew how to play. It looked... freeing." A slight note of envy crept into her voice, and then pale blue eyes met silver once more, assessing. So much like Ilana. "I guess you learn a new thing every day, Ezra Thorne," she replied, but an answering glint of humor glittered in pale eyes.

"You're full of surprises."

Ezra quirked a brow at her, “You don’t know how to play?” He asked, surprise coloring his tone, “Piano’s gotta be the nerdiest instrument out there,” He said with a half grin. Her reputation for being super bookish was no secret - the rich kids network was small after all. Everyone knew about each other to an irritating degree. His sister probably knew more about Silvi than she knew about herself, being as gossipy as she was.

He said nothing to what he assumed was a compliment from her. Ezra walked past her and out of the room, “So why’re you trying to sneak out, Morata?” He called out behind himself, hinting that he didn’t mind if she walked with him, “Thought you’d be taking notes and writing a book report on the event.”

She grimaced at his surprise. She had a feeling this would be how he would have reacted. Casting her eyes down, she fiddled with her sleeve. "I play... something else," she admitted sheepishly. "Mother wasn't a big fan of the piano; my dad didn't have the room to keep one." Technically, her father's ship didn't have the room for anything, much less something like a keyboard.

Still, she followed, heels clicking on the marble flooring as she tried to keep in step with his longer-legged strides. Lofting a brow at his last comment, pulling herself tall and a small smile ticking at the corner of her mouth. "Shows what little you really know then, Thorne," she replied with a chuckle. "I can't stand parties like that. I'm just here for the extra credit. My last project..." she panned her gaze away, her voice growing quiet.

"...Before I graduate early and get the hell out of here."

Glancing back at him, she cocked her head, and the wistful expression was suddenly replaced by a look of mischief. "I was surprised to see you here too. Enjoy these kinds of things?"

She kept in step with him fairly easily, hands lacing behind her and tilting her head in active curiosity. A silvery strand of hair slipped free at the movement, curling against her shoulder. '

Ezra didn’t bother asking what she played, though her awkward answer certainly prompted a raised brow from him. He kept walking down the hall, making his way towards the stairs that led to the open roof. He came across a closed door that had an old-fashioned lock on it. Ezra pulled out what looked like a hairpin - one he stole from his sister - and he began to fiddle with the lock.

“I don’t mind them,” He said as he tinkered with the lock, “My father hogs all the attention and I get left alone,” There was a twinge of bitterness in his tone, though his face betrayed nothing. There was an audible click as the lock gave away. He pocketed the hairpin and turned the knob, opening the door to the stairs. It was dark, so he took out his NalPhone to light the way up the stairs.

“Oh? Gonna go against the grain? Not use any of mommy’s money? Make something for you and prove to the galaxy you’re a big deal all by yourself?” Ezra snickered as he walked up the steps. If he had a credit for every time he heard a rich kid talk about how they couldn’t wait to get away, he would be almost as wealthy as his father, “Don’t kid yourself, Morata, you dig these parties. You like the attention, the free food, the free drinks and rubbing elbows with powerful people. Just like the rest of us. It’s okay to be reminded we’re better than everyone.”

The door to the roof opened easily enough and he felt that brush of fresh air against his skin. Ezra stepped out into the roof, staring up at what looked like glittering stars in between the smog. Sky was near impossible to see on Coruscant, but this place was high enough to offer that extremely rare opportunity.

“Too high for speeders,” Ezra said quietly, gazing up. Even the soft caress of the wind felt unnatural because it was so rare in the lower levels. He walked over to the edge, glancing down at the drop that appeared to be miles long.

Most would have bristled at his sarcastic words, but something about the way he said them, perhaps, or even his overall demeanor... it was ridiculous, wasn't it? She let out a laugh, silvery and light, shoulders shaking with the movement as she tossed her head back. Did she really sound so typical? Giving him a smirk, she tightened her arms around her waist, perking a silvery brow.

"Really nailed me there, Thorne," she replied, the smirk morphing into a grin. "I must sound like a broken record, huh..." Still, she slanted him a look, uncrossing her arms to look out past him, taking a deep breath of the cooler air.

"...I enjoy those where I'm not seen as an accessory," she spoke up quietly. The wind almost brushed away her voice, but the meaning would still be heard, felt. "Where I'm not a tool to get closer to a Mother that doesn't see me as my own person, and where the value of my work is actually seen. But I'll get there... even if it's with my mother's money." The smile faded, became a bittersweet grin. "Don't you ever get tired of being an echo?"

Perhaps he wouldn't hear the last sentence. It didn't matter; she didn't expect a response from what might have been a rhetorical question. Stepping up beside him, she stretched out her fingers towards the glittering lights. Stars, distant ships, did it matter? She was gonna be out there soon.

Peering down with him, she cocked her head, giving a hum.

"But not a bad view, huh?" Giving him a sideways glance, she gave a mischievous grin.

"Want to tag along and call a ship? I'm thinking of going for a swim somewhere. Unless you've got other plans?" She was cocking her head, guaging distance. Shiva could call a cab for them; pacing to another side of the level, she spotted the drive-in bay where all valets waited with the chauffers.

Perhaps they could even steal a cab... a plan was beginning to form.

Ezra’s lips tugged towards a smirk at her response. He had half expected a haughty reply that he would casually ignore. However, her words stuck with him as he stared off at the skyline. He looked over at her briefly, watching the wind brush her silvery hair. It wasn’t often he saw humanoids with hair that color, and he knew for her it was all natural. Ilana Morata had a very distinct and pronounced look, and her daughter certainly inherited a lot of her mother’s beauty. The frostiness Silvi alluded to was similar to what Ezra experienced with his own father. Dad was warm and loving, but Pops was always distant. It always felt like he was lightyears away from Ezra in terms of league, always too many steps ahead for him to ever catch up.

He remained silent at her question, focusing his attention on the speeders in the distance that looked like flies. Her suggestion caught him by surprise and he looked over with a brow raised, “A swim?” He asked, finding the request rather abrupt and strange. And yet, she had his curiosity now, “Do you just happen to have a bag full of swimwear ready to go?” He asked, amusement bleeding into his tone.

Ezra reached for his NalPhone and pressed a few buttons. Within moments, a speeder zoomed up towards them, a droid pilot floating nearby. The droid complained about how this wasn’t safe and to head down to the lower levels immediately.

He largely ignored it, climbing up onto the ledge of the roof. He extended a hand for Silvi to grab, “Scared?” He asked with a faint grin, the wind rustling his hair, defiance dancing in his striking silver eyes. If she took his hand, he would leap into the open speeder, jumping across a small gap that would otherwise be a several miles long drop.

It was strange to not feel the weight of glasses on her face; she itched with the urge not to reach up to push them back up her nose. Still, he didn't offer a sassy retort like she expected. It was rather nice to be listened to, rather than teased. He seemed so different, and yet, in some ways, his reputation wasn't too far off. When he asked if she had swimming gear, however, she merely chuckled. "A lady never tells all her secrets at once," she grinned, blue eyes glimmering with humor.

He was already texting for a ride before she could even request from Shiva. Still, she looked up at him on the ledge, and gave him a mischievous smirk again, tucking the stray strand of silvery hair from her face and lifting her other hand to grip his firmly.

"A little. But doesn't that make life fun?"

Leaping up after him, she staggered a moment on her heels when they landed in the speeder. She could feel her heart lurch with excitement, the instinctual fear mingling with it. His hand was warmer than she expected, too; another misconception she would have to amend.

Sliding into the seat, she entered in the coordinates to a residence in one of the high-rises. "We'll have to sneak in a short distance, if you're game," she spoke up, slanting him a sideways glance. "Not too late to change your mind if you want, Thorne."

“Secrets?” Ezra scoffed, “They’re splashed all over social media, just like all my secrets” He said humorlessly as they hopped into the speeder. Being the ISC President’s son meant nothing was entirely hidden. The stupid ThorneWatch app also made it so anytime Pops was spotted, Ezra was tracked as well by obnoxious fans.

When she mentioned sneaking, he quirked a brow, “Do I look like I’m built for sneaking?” He asked dryly, already having to tilt his legs to fit in the speeder. Ezra may not have been muscular like Pops, but he was certainly still growing in height. Nevertheless, he wasn’t going to back down from this, “Besides, I’m curious to see what tricks you have up your sleeve,” He admitted aloud. Morata had surprised him so far, and she was certainly easy on the eyes. There was something different about her now - a shine to her eyes, the way she carried herself, and a boldness that wasn’t there before. It was as if she was coming out of her shell since moving away from the party and it piqued his interest.

“Where is this place that we hope won’t put us as front page news?”

She panned her gaze more fully to him when he asked if she thought he could be sneaky, then slowly looked him up and down, seeming to fully regard him for a moment or two. Truthfully, she was stalling a bit, as he had a fair point; some of the places they'd have to go through would quite literally involve some good blending in, and Ezra was anything but.

But then again...

She gave a one-shouldered shrug, and a bright grin. "Well, you're full of surprises to me so far," she replied simply. Although he had a point; though she liked being seen and her own person, being on the front page was the last thing either of them would want to establish themselves. Still, he mentioned tricks, which pulled a chuckle from her. The droid beeped three times, alarming them of the altitude, before it began to move, a swift, smooth track that effortlessly bypassed other traffic and began to head westward, away from the party still roaring behind them.

For a few moments, it seemed to climb down, but then leveled, until a series of high rises came into view. Not the houses of diplomats or ambassadors, or even governors. These were the establishments of the nouveau riche, but noticeably... not hers.

They should have left it unlocked... she mused to herself, gaze panning at the glass walls and duracrete structure. Sure enough, one of the panels of glass had been propped open from the inside, just as her friend Josie had told her. Carefully taking manual control, she guided the speeder next to the entrance and parked it. Glancing around to look out for cameras, she spotted the glimmer of one ten feet away, but it was pointed down a different hall. Still, they would be in its' peripheral if they weren't careful.

She wasn't going to tell him that technically this was a house she was housesitting for Josie over the holidays. Technically, the pool was very much off limits to outsiders... but if she had the housecard, it shouldn't be too much of a problem. "We'll have to stick to the wall," she nodded towards the glass, "but otherwise should be relatively clear until we get to a gated section." She waited for him to get out first; after all, he was taller, and it would be really awkward to climb over his lap. Just even thinking about that made her ears flush.

Ezra observed the sights and surroundings from the speeder, noticing the shift in neighborhoods. For all the wealth his family had, his Pops was a minimalist. The rest of his family, however, lived in the lap of luxury. He was mildly impressed by the neighborhoods until the speeder came to a stop near a house. Ezra got out of the speeder and cast her a curious glance.

“Breaking into someone’s house?” He asked with surprise in his tone, “This will definitely end up on Holonet..” He muttered quietly as he followed her. He immediately caught on that she was looking for security cameras - after all this wasn’t the first time he was sneaking onto someone else’s property.

Ezra was thoroughly amused, so he went along towards whatever path led to the pool. At certain points the corridor narrowed and Silvi would have to practically press right up against him. Ezra couldn’t help but grin, “Damn Morata, if you wanted to bump and grind, we could’ve snuck to a club instead,” He said as they inched closer to their destination.

She had to internally cringe when the corridor got more narrow; it may have been a servants' entrance, but why did they have to make it so bloody small? Spine stiffening, she glanced over her shoulder at him, and felt heat crawl from her ears to her cheeks, and dusting the back of her exposed neck. Hell, his breathing was practically on the nape of her neck, and it took everything in her willpower not to squirm away and bolt back to the speeder.

"I-I didn't choose this deliberately!" she hissed between her teeth, abruptly turning away and feeling her shoulders stiffen. The doorway was right there, she just had to reach into her pocket and get the small card Josie gave her. But moving like this meant getting closer to Ezra.. and she wasn't certain if her heart could take more of its' racing. It had to be embarrassment.

He's just too close, that's all.

Gritting her jaw, she shoved a hand into her pocket, feeling around and praying to the powers that be that she didn't leave it on her nightstand again. Feeling it in her fingers, she exhaled slowly.

"...Sorry. I just... I'm not used to being this physically close to someone,"
she muttered quickly, then swiped the card over the reader. The sounds of splashing weren't too far ahead; she could smell the chlorine, low lights pulsing in the deeper water like some submarine thing. Staggering past him, she glanced about to see if the coast was clear, then glanced over her shoulder at Ezra, offering him an embarrassed, warm smile.

"Our swimming pool reservation. Hope you don't mind..." she reached up, pulling the stick out of her hair to let it unravel to her back, then turning away and bending to remove Shiva from her pocket, as well as her heels, "that I came prepared." Sort of. She realized she'd forgotten to ask if he had anything to swim in...
