  • Name: Roke'ne (R-ooh-k-knee)
  • Biology: These creatures are anywhere from 5'10 to 7'5, and weigh between 200lbs and 270lbs. They have grey, porous skin that secretes a wax gel, and breath through their mouths, gills, and skin using cutaneous air breathing. This gel keeps moisture in while on land and dissolves while in water. They appear very muscular, created due to their high protein diets and constant exercise. Their hands and feet are both webbed, and while the appendages on their feet are moved with great effort due to the layers of flesh around the bones, their hands have four fully functional fingers with talon-like tips suited to hunting prey. These webbed appendages allow for Undulatory locomotion through the water. Various nerve clusters along their skin and between their muscles are used to feed information to a unique area of their brain that regulates internal conditions to suit the water they're currently swimming in. This includes the buoyancy of their bones, which act as sort of internal swim-bladders, and the secretion of slime depending on the composition and depth of the water. Along with this, various additional appendages spout from the back of their skin, similar to many small fins. Their skulls are oval shape, pointing down from their necks. Many tendrils surround their mouths, allowing them to easily consume shellfish and other creatures with hard exoskeletons. The gills around their necks are large, allowing them to hold a pocket of water within them, helping them breath on land without having to continually moisten their skin.
  • Breeding: The life-cycle of a Roke'mne begins with the Clan's traditional mating ritual. The Male and Female spar in hand-to-hand combat, proving their mutual worth. The female then lays a collection of egs, which are then inseminated by the male. The first children born are allowed life. After a waiting period of several weeks, once the first batch are hatched, the remaining eggs are destroyed.
It takes approximately 10 years for the child to reach early adulthood, where it is tasked with finding the most suitable partner possible, and continuing the cycle.
  • Strengths: In the water, these creatures are very agile apex predators, as well as being stronger and smarter than the other predators of their oceans. They have great endurance, capable of swimming for miles on end without growing tired. Their claws are deadly in melee combat, and their slime excretions make grapple attempts incredibly difficult. They have incredibly good night-vision and sight in general.
  • Weaknesses: Many of their strengths are lost while on land. They are still fairly agile, strong, and smart. However, they are severely handicapped, and virtually no Roke'ne become adapted to life on land. The nerve clusters used to detect environmental factors need to adjust to life on land, and are very vulnerable spots in combat. if hit, they will severely weaken the Roke'ne for a short time, until the body can recover from the shock.
  • Diet: The Roke'ne are carnivores, eating primarily fish, crustaceans, and other undersea mammals. Some Roke'ne supplement this diet with undersea kelp.
  • Behavior/Temperament: Most Roke'ne have the minds of warriors, and are fiercely territorial. However, they tend towards the cunning, prone to sneaking up on their prey and using subterfuge in eliminating romantic rivals. They tend to stick close to their tribes, adopting a semi-pack mentality.
  • Communication: Most Roke'ne communicate using a series of subsonic noises projected from folds around their gills. This is virtually impossible for most species to understand; so most members that have chosen to live on land adopt translators.
  • Culture: The Roke'ne have a sort of semi-religion, where all members are reverent and even spiteful of what they call 'The Great Old One', whom they believe created them and placed them in the oceans of their planets. It is a vengeful deity, and tests them daily with the harsh conditions of the deep seas. This leads into a semi resentment of this god, but a belief in it none the less.
  • History: Not much is known about the Roke'ne. What is known is carried primarily by the tales from the veteran warriors; that they had lived in their oceans for hundreds of thousands of years, since they had been placed by the Great Old One. While this is unlikely to say the least, no galactic scholars have been able to discover the origins of this species. More recent history is primarily a long series of clan conflicts, hit-and raids, and near constant violence.
  • Planet:This species can be found on many worlds consisting primarily of water, such as Kamino. However, their presence isn't often known, as they primarily keep to the very depths of the Oceans.
  • Technology: Virtually no technology beyond a sharpened spear is used in the tribes. However, those that live on the surface or in Outer Space have been known to adapt alien technology to their cultural preferences.
  • Intent: The intent of this is several fold. Not only will it provide an interesting new species for players, but it will also factor into an ongoing storyline i'm constructing based around Lovecraftian horrors. It will also allow players an opportunity to further explore the backstories of the species, discovering their true origins and building very rich stories.

Very well done! Did you design the character model, or did you find it online? Also, did you do it in Photoshop?

So two big things that stuck out:

1. I would go with gills or lungs and not both. Just from a common sense biological purpose if Rokene spend most of their time in the water, then lungs are wasted space especially if they're the strongest in the water. I suggest going like with cutaneous respiration for when they're out of the water.

2. Natural body slime. Clearly its going to need to be hydrophobic in order to make it glide through water, however, if this is the case, then it will also keep water from reaching its gills and possibly just draw out the water from its own body. So I suggest reading up on aquatic locomotion and see what best fits for your creature.

Hmm, I checked aquatic motion, but I didn't really find anything relating to this specifically. I was wondering if the slime layer could act like a sort of sponge, absorbing water for use in breathing until full, which would allow both processes to take place.

I'll also be taking your suggestion for Cutaneous Respiration.

If the slime is like that then it will be hydrophilic and water-based, so it will break up while in the water.

I would look at the biology of a mudskipper, which would closely represent what you have here.

How's that look?

I think you're best bet is undulatory locomotion, due to its fins and webbed appendages, throw in some swim bladders in order to aid with rising and falling. I am ok with the 'slime' but if its used for swimming then you're gong to need to add the weaknesses of it.

Ooo! How about this for the 'slime' - The slime can be a waxy excretion that is used while the creature is on land to create a protective layer to prevent moisture loss and conserve water within its body. The slime dissolves from the creatures body once in an aquatic environment.

Oh I do like that! :D

Edited.
