I abuse the New Posts feature, so this comes up often. Is it really necessary to have?

Yes, it is.

The search index is an epic mess and has been for a few months now. It can't be cleaned up until the database is cleaned up and Lucid is still working to do that. Overuse of the search function has caused database errors, so this helps to reduce that.
