If there is one thing that network news loves, it's press conferences. They don't have to do anything but allow the livestream to play on their frequencies, and today Treasury Secretary of the Independent Systems Consortium was giving them that very gift. In addition to giving the network news a small respite from filling airtime with political posturing and arguing, York himself had shown to provide decent enough ratings with his polished good looks and the scandals that he always seemed to dodge unfazed and unharmed. As the stations all over the galaxy switched to his livestream, they would be greeted with York in a full, tailored business suit behind a pedestal with the ISC logo emblazoned for all to see.

"Fellow citizens of the galaxy, as Secretary of the Treasury for the Independent Systems Consortium, in these uncertain times, I come to you in high spirits and with promising news from the ISC. Leadership involves looking at the current reality and confronting the brutal facts. To that end, the leadership of the FWA and New Republic have failed in their call for leadership, especially as it pertains to an economic recovery that has been fueled by war, a pandemic, and most recently, the splitting of the FWA and the formation of the New Republic by the Core Worlds and many inside the Inner Rim."

With a small sigh and a short shrug, York continued. "The hastiness of this split without considering the economic impact of their own planets and systems is an unfortunate testimony to why both the FWA and the New Republic have struggled to see economic growth. Their banks war with each other over control to determine the value of what has long been the galactic standard currency- the Galactic Standard Credit. Unfortunately, this standard unit has been torn to shreds in an economic power struggle between the two factions, resulting in a severe devaluation. The standard credit has devalued over 20% since the start of the AMS pandemic, and the rate of decline has increased since the split of the FWA. Economic uncertainty is what this split brought the galaxy, and it came at the worst possible time."

York would smile, foreshadowing a potential solution. "Fortunately, the ISC isn't involved in this quibble. We have been busy building our infrastructure, closing gaps in our supply chains, and making life better for the citizens inside our borders. Our planets and systems work together to defend each other and build our economies so that our manufacturing planets and can focus on creating finish goods, our agricultural planets can focus on providing food in such abundance that it can be sold at a price that benefits both the buyer and seller. This allows our untouched planets that are thick with jungles and forests and caves and untouched metal ore veins and other abundant natural resources to benefit from their natural bounty like never before."

York's smile ebbed away, and his hands grabbed both sides of the podium. "As such, the Central Bank of the Consortium will soon be issuing its own currency, the Consortium Crown. The Crown will not be backed by idle promises like the Republic Credits are backed by assurances in smokey back rooms of Coruscant under shady deals that ensure the wealthy stay on top and the poor stay at the bottom. The Crown will be backed by valued goods- everything from precious metals to rare gases stored in secret vaults. At first issuance, our calculations would put the Crown equal to 1.21 Republic Credits. The Crown will only improve it's exchange rate to the Republic Credit as our economies become more integrated, our supply chains complete, and as more systems agree to become part of the Consortium. All this at a time when the businesses and industries inside the FWA and New Republic are infighting, devaluing the currency of the past."

Leaning forward, he intended to draw the viewer in, queuing a call to action. "Independent planets and systems, or planets in the FWA or New Republic that want to do business a different way, a coherent way, a way that is clearly navigating these turbulent times better than the FWA or the New Republic, our door is open to you. If you have been using the standard Credit as your currency or the wupiupi or any of the other countless denominations of currency that have seen their value plummet in this economic climate, you have a lifeline. Through membership in the Consortium, you get access to the Central Bank and you can begin exchanging your currencies for the Consortium Crown. As your government and your citizens put your faith in the Crown, you will see the value of your currency increase which means more wealth simply for changing currency. If you stay with the standard, I assure you, the opposite will continue to happen. In addition, we have fewer regulations and a much more flexible taxation system that fits individual planetary needs and stimulates business. Unlike the FWA or the New Republic, the success of the ISC depends on the Independent success of our member planets. We are stronger together when we are stronger individually, so all member planets and systems are committed to helping other member planets in their economic pathways."

Leaning back, a slight nod would signal that he was nearing the conclusion of his address. "The ISC is unlike any confederation ever to exist on such a scale in the galaxy. We don't have a powerful central planet like Coruscant that can dictate the rules to everyone else. We work together as a consortium to help each other, and by doing so, we help all of us. These are exciting times in a challenging era. Our insistence on collaboration ensures our mutual success. You could be collaborating and succeeding with us. It's an opening invitation to all who will work together for the common good. Thank you all for listening, and my office will be available for any questions. We will answer them as quickly as possible."

The livestream ends, and the nonstop news networks begin their political back and forth on the topic at hand.

Eder Owusaan was a man beset by weakness and back-stabbing within his own government but, it seemed, that the Free World's Alliance was cursed with something even worse. Worse than a Prime Minister who's sole contribution to politics was giving (justified) sass to insufferable Jedi Masters and worse than senators coming for his job. No, what was far worse for him and his government was simply this; a competent contemporary.

The ISC.

Some within his own planet had believed that it was destined to be nothing but another poorly executed governmental mess in the Outer Rim, where democracy had never truly had a chance to flourish. Eder himself had had some of his political analysts back home work on methods to turn a collapse within the ISC to their advantage. But, it seemed that the dream of one charismatic man had been made true through hard work and dedication of many.

Which left the FWA in the very real position of looking as though it was being upstaged by a newcomer. With the recent... developments... concerning the Standard Galactic Credit? Well, those rumors were a lot closer to the truth than he would like and as Chancellor he would be connected, blamed, rightly or wrongly. It happened while he was Chancellor and even if it was something no one could have reasonably predicted, he would be expected to predict it.

In the privacy of his home office, Eder would raise a toast to York himself for his delivery of the news. A boost to the ISC while, at the same time, a dagger in the heart of the public's trust in the economy of the opposition. The livestream alone had caused the markets to drop again, though they would likely experience a minor bump in the near future - short lived as it would be of course.

But he was not in the privacy of his own home, of course.

"Chancellor, what do you have to say in response to the ISC creating their own competing currency?!"

Eder smiled his most practiced smile and tried not to look like he felt about the whole subject, ambushed as he had been by the press while attempting to leave the office for the day. An expected ambush was, after all, still an ambush in a way.

"I'm sure they've given banks on all sides a headache when it comes to setting up an exchange rate."
he answered with that same smile, "After all, some planets will not be eager to accept a currency with no historical precedent behind it. Though I'm sure Secretary York has plans in place for when the planets question just what, exactly, backs up the Crown aside from his own assurances and a catchy name."

It was a catchy name and he did respect the Game being played - but that didn't mean he wasn't going to throw hot-takes right back after all. The reporters smelled blood in the water, seeing the chance to stoke the flames between the Chancellor and the ISC.

"So you believe that the Credit is still the superior currency? Despite it's rapid decline?"

Rapid was something of an understatement but Eder wasn't about to be seen agreeing with York and the ISC about the state of the economy. Simply put, they needed to get themselves back on track fast before things spiraled even further out of control.

"The decline of the Credit's value is undeniable - I can't argue away cold, hard, numbers - but this is not the first time it has fallen in such a manner. When the Death Star was destroyed - both times - it fell hard. When the Sith Wars were at their height, it fell hard."
he smiled slightly wider, "The truth of the matter is that the Standard Credit has bounced back from worse, multiple times, and yet has endured and thrived. Hells, it pre-dates some of the members of the ISC actually speaking Basic."

Ah shrak.

The reporters were taking note of that comment... because he'd let his passions kind of run away with him and pushed an open insult to some of the ISC planets. Kark, he was already mentally composing the "Apology" he would be giving in the future. KARK this entire situation for backing him in a corner like this.

"And what about Senator Rayne of Commenor's comments that she believes your time as Chancellor is to be short-lived?"

Oh he had heard those comments, in response to the ingrate from Tinnel IV throwing his toys out the pram. But they were wide, sweeping, enough to cover literally anything he did. The scowl that formed on his face was quick but the cameras caught it.

"If Senator Rayne believes she has the knowledge, foresight and skill to inform the direction of the democratic peoples of the Galaxy then she is welcome to actually attempt to do so; though I fear she may simply stick to disparaging those who actually attempt to do so. I'm afraid that is all I have time for today."

The Chancellor nodded to his security, who pressed the reporters further away, allowing the man to escape to the relative safety of his speeder as it began to fly off. He'd draft that apology to the ISC planets he offended and send it publicly if (when) someone pointed out that it had been far too pointed to be anything but an insult but he would be damned if he sent anything of the sort to Rayne. If she wanted to try for his office she was about to learn she was out of her depth.

"What a Crowning achievement" Newton muttered with a deadpan voice as he smirked after watching the video address after being notified by his secretary droid L3. Finally, some actual news though, instead of tabloids being plastered all over his feeds. There were other things concerning the ISC that are also worth watching, but for now, yes Consortium crowns. Did Mr. York come up with that one on his own? It does admittedly sound pretty cool.

It's no secret that the ISC has been upstaging the New Republic and Free Worlds Alliance for quite some time, five-years? Time moves so fast it seems... Newton has a feeling before too long that the ISC will grow much more and will just completely supplant both the Republic and Free Worlds Alliance completely. Newton doesn't care for politics in general normally, because there tend to inept fools in power and he would rather be left to his own devices, but the Consortium manages to impress him yet again. Newton will be sure to get some crowns of his own and invest in the new currency, that's what he will do.

For now, although the galactic credit standard is inferior to the crown, there is still tons of profit to be made in the Free Worlds and Republic as well as the ISC. Newton will be sure to have L3 keep track of the success of the crown, while also keeping an eye on the credit.

Newton didn't care to watch the brief after-the-fact interview by the Chancellor though.
