Further to this.

This thread is a continued work-in-progress, as per it being in the workshop, however you're absolutely encouraged to post.

"What others abandon, we protect."
- Ranger Motto

As dawn breaks on a Hundred Years of the Darkness, the galaxy has begun to rebuild. With devastation touching so many systems and the fabled Jedi Knights on the brink of extinction, entire planets, sectors and the Republic itself have been forced to rely more on their own law enforcement bodies to stem the rising tide of criminality. As the Hutt Cartel's influence spreads far beyond the old borders, the rot of government corruption, the desperation of refugees and the malevolence of enterprising crime-lords and aspiring warlords threatens to brew a perfect storm that may yet topple whole civilised worlds, if not the heart of the Republic itself.

Into this chaos steps the Sector Rangers, a once-floundering organisation that has been reinvigorated the end of the war and the harsh realities of its aftermath. There are a great number of similarities among the majority of law enforcement personnel, but few are cut from the same mold as the Rangers. These individuals are authorized by the Republic, through the local government, to seek out any and all violations of law in an entire sector of the galaxy. In many ways, sector rangers are the opposite of smugglers; fiercely independent and possessed of a tremendous degree of autonomy and ingenuity but instead of selfish desires for wealth, they possess a strong desire to see justice served. Known for their tenacity, they can hound a lawbreaker across a sector and back, making them among the most carefully avoided authorities in the galaxy.

Although rangers are known to be active within just about every sector of Republic space - including the Core Worlds - they are most prominent, or perhaps the most well-regarded, on the Outer Rim where their cavalier attitude, disregard for local bureaucracy and focus upon the most heinous of crimes has made them popular with citizens at large. In some of the more distant parts of space, rangers may well be the only real source of law and order. How the local government and law enforcement view the rangers varies a great deal; some may be thankful for the additional assistance, whereas others view them as unnecessary interference from the greater Republic, or even encroaching on their sovereignty. For their part, the organisation has typically remained apolitical, despite technically being backed by the Republic, owed in large part to its focus on the less regarded - and thus, least secure - territories.

Despite possessing something of a well-earned reputation as mavericks, rangers are nonetheless bound by the law they serve - both that of the greater Republic and sector legislation. Rangers are still expected to apprehend suspects alive if possible, and a ranger with too many knotches on his blaster is liable to face an investigation into his conduct. With amount of autonomy afforded to them, the organisation cannot abide by the overly trigger-happy. On the frontier colonies this type of behaviour is easier to conceal and more than a few rangers have very bloody (if not entirely unjustified) hands. Closer to the Core Worlds and on high-profile cases however, the bureaucrats and courts lick their lips at the opportunity to bring down any desperado with a badge. Territorial boundaries have also hindered many apprehensions, but more than a few fugitives have taken their safety for granted after having fled Republic space.... and some rangers are more stubborn - not to mention imaginative - than others.

Question for you m’kind fellow, as I may have missed it while reading this over had it been mentioned. Would characters who were or are affiliated with law enforcement have to join the rangers fully? Leaving whatever post they were assigned? Or could I for instance, still be a cop but also be a Sector Ranger?

I imagine that to avoid a conflict of interest they'd be required to become a Ranger fully. It'd certainly be possible for them to be working alongside of their former colleagues, considering how useless contacts, information and local knowledge would be to their duties, however. In Legends they were also known to deputise civilians and commandeer local police resources, which could play into ones dealings with 'em.
