Sex Strike

In Togo, an opposition coalition named "Let's Save Togo" and led by Isabelle Ameganvi has called for Togo's women to engage in a sex strike to get president Faure Gnassingbe to resign. He's been in power since 2005 and his father had been ruling for 38 years previously. Their hope is that it will encourage apolitical men to become more interested in helping the opposition.

Apparently, sex strikes have been used in numerous other instances. Among the Igbo, women would band together after instances of abuse and refuse sex. In Liberia in 03, sex strikers played a role in ending the war. In Kenya in 09, they had a week long sex strike where they even compensated sex workers who participated in the strike.

How much do you think it'll help? And do you think the opposition has a reasonable chance of eventually deposing Gnassingbe?

If they're trying a protest like this, I'm guessing that starvation and binding themselves to trees is probably rare in Togo. Plus, I'm guessing that if there's enough participation by women, there'll be a lot more reason for apolitical men to get engaged in politics.
