EQUIPMENT

DESCRIPTION
The SH-3 Gun Tug is a class of small combat utility spacecraft manufactured by the SoroSuub Corporation, primarily for the Outer Rim market. As its name suggests, the Gun Tug is fitted out to perform the duties of a spacetug, with a pair of swivel-mount tractor beams allowing it to push and pull cargo and other ships. It is also capable of performing the duties of a pinnace, that is to say an armed "launch" carried aboard a larger ship, used for everything from VIP transport to starfighter. In production for over a century, the Gun Tug has proven competent wearing many hats, and remains highly prized for its versatility.

The Gun Tug, in form, better resembles a particularly bulky airspeeder rather than a spacecraft. Nevertheless, it has proven well made and durable for all its homely appearance, and has a tendency to "grow" on its pilots. 12 meters in length, the ship is flown by a crew of 2, including a pilot and a dedicated tractor beam operator; as mentioned, the Gun Tug has 2 tractor beams, projecting in a forward arc. Gun Tugs have the capacity to push or pull many hundreds of tons of external mass, and were in fact designed to serve as a short-haul alternative to light freighters, pushing modular cargo containers ahead of them on intra-system and short hyperspace routes. They can also be used - singly or in groups - to move disabled ships, space stations, debris and more.

In addition to its capabilities as a spacetug, the Gun Tug is - as per the name - equipped with weapons to defend itself. Twin medium laser cannons are mounted in the nose, controlled by the pilot; although the ship is not as fast as most dedicated starfighters, it is comparably maneuverable, and can hold its own in a nekfight with a good pilot at the stick. Notably, experienced Gun Tug crews make a habit of incorporating the ship's tractor beams into combat; the operator will use the beams to "pin" an opponent, allowing the pilot to more easily keep on the enemy's tail, delivering a kill or disabling shot much more easily than such a craft might otherwise.

Notably, Gun Tugs are equipped for relatively long-duration spaceflight compared to most ships their size. With consumables sufficient for up to a week of flight time, the craft's spacious cockpit has collapsible privacy partitions for pilot and copilot, flight seats that fold down into sleeping berths, a full-featured holographic entertainment system, a compact autogalley and a refresher.

Gun Tugs have proved remarkably popular in less civilized regions of the Galaxy. Their small size, tough construction and ability to fight when necessary make them a natural choice for independent freight pilots and small cargo transport outfits; these same features make them very attractive to pirates, of course. Many pirate gangs will have at least 1 or 2 Gun Tugs in their inventory for hauling away captured ships and cargo.

LEGALITY
Legal. Gun Tugs, despite their armament, are generally classified as work ships in many regions of the Galaxy, and are therefore easy enough to acquire.

INTENT
To bring a ship from canon into our site's fanon.
