Adoption rates on Kiffu were extremely low, with chances of being taken in decreasing drastically after the age of 5. It was around the age of 8 that his matron had secured passage for her older children to be sent to a larger and more equipped facility on Coruscant. Shujaa wasn't at all excited by this thought because despite the fact that he had no family left on Kiffu, this was still his homeworld and the only home he had ever known. Despite this, the only choices he had were to run away and attempt to survive on his own or stay and leave the planet. After much deliberation, he decided on the former.
A few nights before the arrival of the transport, Shujaa prepared to leave. He didn't have much in personal belongings, so he focused of building a small collection of food to take with him. Hoarding portions of his daily meals and bartering with his friends for extras, he had successfully gathered what he hoped would be enough for at least a few days in the wilds. His plan was to leave the city and hide in the wilderness long enough for them to give up on finding him. He wasn't sure exactly how long they would look, but seeing as he was a pretty unremarkable child that no one would be looking for, he didn't expect an exhaustive effort. He wasn't the first child to run away and wouldn't be the last. The shuttle was planned to arrive in a few nights, spend one day in the city, in which they would visit the orphanage, and leave with the children the following morning. So Shujaa planned to leave after their initial visit.
He figured being accounted for during their arrival would work in his favor and it would give him one last chance to see his friends, but mostly he was curious to see the people he would have eventually had been cared for by. So on the night before their planned arrival, he finished discreetly packing his things and had a restless night of sleep. The next morning there was much noise and commotion that had awakened him from his hard fought sleep. Feeling tired and sluggish, his adrenaline kicked in when he remembered what was happening around him. He left his room to find that most of the children had assembled in the common area and were rushing towards the door. The matron stood in the doorway and seemed to be in the midst of a conversation. It wasn't long before she turned to face the kids and proclaimed that their long awaited guest had arrived.
She stepped to the side as a young woman and middle aged man walked through the door. "This two are from the Jedi Order and will be taking you all to Coruscant."
Shujaa leaned forward to look around the head of someone in front of him and was able to get a good look at the two strangers. They were dressed in robes that he had heard of before in stories. He had never seen a Jedi before in person and his excitement increased. Maybe he was making a mistake by leaving. Were they possibly looking to make the children Jedi? As if on cue, an older kid piped up and asked if they were going to become Jedi.
"Well," said the man smiling wide and warmly, "some of you may have what it takes. However, the main priority is getting you safely between planets." As he spoke, his soft eyes scanned the faces of each and every child. "Not everyone has the force connection needed to join the order but to those of you who do and choose to join..." he trailed off as he made eye contact with Shujaa before finishing, "will have the opportunity to do so."
This was followed by a smile before he continued surveying the room. "There are many different ways to help our order, however, and many jobs that help the Free Worlds as a whole that are also very good options."
The matron then ushered the two Jedi through the growing crowd of curious faces and lead them into the kitchen area. The assistant caretaker then came and corralled the children to keep them preoccupied while the others had their conversation in peace. Shujaa didn't see the Jedi much for the next few hours. He began wondering if they had left to explore the city when the matron summoned him. She asked him to please return to his room and Shujaa's heart dropped. Had he been found out? Please don't let my escape be over before it began, he thought.
When he entered the room, he was surprised to find that the younger Jedi woman was admiring some wall art he had put up and the man sat on the edge of his bed.
"How are you?" he said in that same soft and soothing voice. "I hear your name is Shujaa. It's a pleasure to meet you." he extended his hand and Shujaa accepted it, shaking firmly.
"That's a rather firm grip you have."
"I like being strong. Keeps bullies away." replied Shujaa with a smile.
"Strength is important, but what's even more important is how you use your strength."
Shujaa hurriedly replied, "I protect the little kids."
"Good, good," chuckled the Jedi. "Now when you're protecting the little kids, has anything weird happened? Something you couldn't explain?"
Shujaa thought for a while before responding, "Well..."
-----
Shujaa never went through with his plans to run away. The two Jedi helped him discovered his natural affinity with the force. A few other of the children had also shown a connection and were offered the same opportunity. So they saw off their friends on Coruscant, before boarding the ship once again to head to what would be their true home for the foreseeable future, Ajan Kloss.

After finding his place with the Order, he was able to dive fully into his dream of helping others and doing the right thing. Very idealistic, his decisions seldom focused on selfish needs and more on what worked best for the majority of the people. Safety and justice were his top priority. Even though he felt strongly about these issues, he was also a realist. He knew that evil could never truly be eradicated in its entirety. He knew that someone, somewhere, would always try to step on those who were weak and defenseless. He also knew that he would spend his life going after those people and delivering justice.
He spent vast amounts of his time as a padawan learning the art of lightsaber combat, using his natural strength to learn effective fighting styles. Shujaa was never big on luxury and lavish lifestyles, so he often could be found in the wilderness, learning to live off the land and survive without the conveniences of modern society.
Shujaa managed to build strong connections with a few of the other Jedi and found that he did in fact enjoy the company of good people more than he had imagined he would. He quickly found himself being thrust into the de facto "leader" of his friends group. Though not one to speak for the sake of hearing his own voice, whenever he did decide to open his mouth, everyone listened. His ideas, willingness to listen, and acceptance of criticisms made him a natural born leader. Whether he wanted them to or not, people usually followed his lead or wanted his input before making a decision. It was a bit unsettling at times for the young man.
By the time he was ready to take the Jedi Knight trials, he had been transformed into a exceptional warrior, and solid force practitioner, his strengths being in pyrokinesis and psychometry.
