As many young Padawans, like myself, are left Masterless, I find myself twiddling my thumbs while I wait for someone to open up so I can actually do something meaningful. Socializing is nice, but I don't really know anyone yet, and frankly, combat/missions/training is more fun. Which brings us to the question: can solo training be done? Just like, a really long post on the relevant planet that would involve the character practicing against lightsaber drones, or maybe meditating to practice Force control, is what I had in mind.

Self-training is discouraged. Also, you can still do combat and mission threads without a master.

I went to get the link to the Jedi Missions thread but it seems you already posted in it. If no ones on a mission, or doesn't have spots open to bring you on theirs, all you need to do is find a mission you'd like to take on and start looking for people to join you. It just takes a bit of effort on your part.

Okay. Secondary question: is it possible for a member of the Jedi or Sith Order to also hold a position in the Republic or Empire? I was thinking of making a Sith Assassin who acted as a Jedi-killer for the Sith, and a spy for the Empire.

First, echoing what Rad said, try posting in NJO OOC and organizing a 1-on-1 sparring match with either sword or force based powers if you want to train in combat. Also, again echoing what Rad said, NJO is not the Old Jedi Order, Padawans often conduct their own missions. Make some friends, convince them to NPC for you, and maybe get 1-2 trusted others to go along and you can have a fun little adventure.
