DESCRIPTION​

The Star Galleon-class frigate is a heavily armed transport manufactured by Kuat Drive Yards. Originally developed for the Galactic Empire after Imperial logistics began to be systematically targeted by Rebel hit-and-hype attacks, the Star Galleon was a new take on a very old concept, the galleon, a heavily armed freighter capable of carrying large volumes of cargo, but also being equipped with capital ship-grade weapons in order to drive off even the most determined would-be pirates.

The Star Galleon is 300 meters in length, crewed by 150 beings with a passenger capacity of 300, with consumables for up to 6 months in space. In addition, the ship is able to carry some 100,000 standard tons of cargo in a secure hold. In order to ensure this security, the Star Galleon is equipped with 10 light turbolasers, 5 on each side, plus a single concussion missile launcher. Heavy shields and a thickly armored hull are also present, and the ship is notably resistant to boarding actions, possessing a maze-like interior and equipped with copious blast doors, a sophisticated internal monitoring system for keeping track of intruders, and a large number of remotely operated anti-personnel turrets scattered throughout the corridors, supplementing any security personnel that may be aboard. As a last resort, that cargo hold itself can be jettisoned; to prevent its recovery by pirates, it is equipped with its own class 10 hyperdrive, as well as a navicomputer which is programmed to perform jumps at random until it receives an encrypted override code telling it to stop.

During the years immediately following its introduction, the Star Galleon was used by the Galactic Empire to ship vital supplies to planetary garrisons and other installations across the Galaxy. Though extraordinarily expensive to produce and operate compared to standard bulk transports, the type did its job well, and continues to be used by governments and specialty courier services into the present day. Ironically, Star Galleons are also highly prized as pirate ships, the qualities that make them hard to raid making them equally desirable to those doing the raiding.

Restricted. Star Galleon-class frigates, despite being primarily cargo haulers, are classified as capital ships under Galactic law due to their heavy armament and other military-style equipment.
