If I buy a game on the Steam store, can I back it up on a CD or DVD? The game I want seems to only be available online and not in a real life store, and I am kinda skeptical on getting a game if I do not have a hard copy disc.

Yes, if not you can download and save to disk from a external site (torrent for example) since you own the game it is leagal

Why? You buy the game on Steam and you can play it anywhere you can login to Steam.

I just like having a hard copy. /shrugs
I don't. Not for PC. It's annoying to have to switch out discs just to play something that's already completely on the computer.

I don't like Steam. I got Fallout: New Vegas for Christmas. You have to log in to Steam to install Vegas. The problem is: I can't log into Steam. It freezes up. So I can't play Vegas.

I like launching from Steam too, I just like having a hard disk on my shelf.

That's a problem with your computer, not Steam.

Step 1. Insert disk.

Step 2. Copy downloaded folder onto the disk.

Done.

When you hit "install," the first thing Steam does is make all of the file paths that will be there when the game is fully downloaded. So, if you have a full copy of the directory, you can literally paste it into where it is supposed to go and Steam will accept all of the files (after you hit the "install" button, at least). Did it with Bad Company 2, though I did the file transfer through an external HD and not a disk.

EDIT: I'm not sure if it will work if you try to paste the game directory onto the computer when the game itself has been updated since then.

Steam also has a built in backup feature, where you right click on the game in your library, and select "Backup game"
