With the recent acquisition of Eriadu Shipyards, Sluis Van Shipyards has begun expanding its product range. In addition to using old schematics and designs utilized by the Galactic Alliance Remnant during the Siege of Manaan, SVS has also begun to experiment with their own new, original designs. The latest of these of these additions is the new Audacity-class Escort Carrier, designed to provide substantial strikecraft support for cruisers and destroyers on a budget, long range raiding and assault, and convoy interception.

Straddling the line between a fleet carrier and a smaller light carrier, the Audacity-class is a dedicated space carrier that can strike both hard and fast on a budget. Carrying up to a full two wings of strikecraft* for a total of 144 starfighters or bombers, it is a force to be reckoned with by both starfighter and capital ship commanders alike. Being lightly armored and comparatively lightly armed with only a few laser cannons and point defense guns, it focuses the vast majority of its power on its shields and engines to ensure a quick, maneuverable vessel that can race to the edge of an interdiction field or away from other larger ships of the line while still being fairly well protected against most mid-to-low level surprise attacks long enough to launch its complement and retreat.

It does, of course, have its drawbacks as any vessel of its type does. As a dedicated carrier entirely stripped of turbolasers, shuttles, and ground vehicles to allow as many strikecraft as possible, it is most certainly not equipped to go toe-to-toe with other capital ships in a close-range firefight or participate in boarding missions or a ground assault, due to its notable lack of heavy armament and comparatively light armor, though it can take fairly heavy beatings in short bursts thanks to its comparatively strong shielding. Wise naval commanders who value their lives will, on the tactical level, be sure to take advantage of its superior strikecraft range over its opponents turbolasers and guns by utilizing its speed to avoid close-range confrontations whenever possible, maneuvering to jump out of the system to let their strikecraft due their work and jump back in to retrieve, repair, and refuel them later, or placing them behind their heavier ships of the line.

On the strategic, macro level, they have multiple effective uses. Their speed and complement makes them excellent standalone choices for most convoy raiding, guerilla warfare, and long range raids, and patrol duties enabling them to wreak absolute havoc on light to medium defended enemy convoys, fleets, and facilities. Used in groups, they can serve as part of an effective mobile planetary defense force, especially if held in reserve slightly out of system or at its edge and then jumped in to their preferred deployment range out of the reach of enemy ships of the line or simply be screened by other capital ships, or otherwise be used on the offensive to significantly bolster the strikecraft complement of an assault fleet with comparatively little overhead and cost.

Coming in at a very reasonable 4,000,000 credits thanks to its relatively simplistic nature and light armament and with a comparatively small crew size, the Audacity-class Escort Carrier is an excellent choice for smaller groups or factions or larger ones who need quite a bit of firepower but simply cannot afford to splurge on either personnel or credits. I compared 3x Audacitys to one of these larger approved Intrepid fleet carriers in order to see how they would balance out since they are roughly equal in length. At a wing and a half, or 112 strikecraft per Audacity, it would total to 336 strikecraft in comparison to the Intrepid’s 288. However, the Intrepid also has sixty heavy weapons (turbolasers, heavy turbolasers, heavy concussion missile launchers), room for 40 more shuttles/assault/landing craft which tend to be larger than starfighters, and sixty point defense laser cannons. Thus, I thought in order to balance it to make it more reasonable in an engagement between them, I kicked it up to two wings given that the Audacitys have no heavy weapons, shuttles and a fairly limited number of laser cannons and point defense guns, making 432 vs 288, making it a more even fight (if the Intrepid got the drop on the three Audacitys and managed to close into firing range, it would win thanks to its heavy guns, but if the Audacitys managed to keep their range (which is their use doctrinally), they would probably edge out over the Intrepid thanks to their superior number of strikecraft.

Comparing the Audacity to the Imperium’s Censor-class carriers which hold one wing and shuttles, it is over 120 meters longer, lacks its shuttle capacity, lacks its freighter capacity, lacks any of its turbolasers or ion cannons, and has half the amount of heavy laser cannons, with all of that going strictly toward more space for starfighters. Essentially, while the Censor is more multi-role and might actually be able to send boarding parties to other ships, survive against a frigate in a shootout with its cannons, do reasonably well against a squadron or more of starfighters on its own without protection, the Audacity is a dedicated starfighter/bomber carrier whose sole best options are to flee/outrun or rely on its starfighters when faced with enemy strikecraft/capital ships with turbolasers.
