[Silex Tan]

Silex Tan walked down the halls of the Jedi temple. It was early morning and there was a joyous atmosphere over the planet. Silex tapped her vambrace, pulling up a holoscreen with the information she had recieved earlier that morning. It said that a young girl of about fifteen had arrived on Yavin IV in search of a master. Silex considered her information: She had been in a hyperdrive accident that probably left her physically and mentally scarred. This, however, didn't daunt Silex. She knew what it was like to have an upsetting past and wanted to help the girl through it.

Silex was excited but also nervous to become a master to a padawan. Her first master had been... interesting, to say the least. He had been her master during her stint as a Sith. She had thought she was growing to like him, but her deep and complicated feelings for him must not have been reciprocated because he had been ignorant in his ways and showed no regret for the attack on the rebel base a few years back. Silex did not want to be oblivious to her mistakes and the mistakes of her first master.

Pushing those thoughts away, she focused on the journey ahead. She walked out of the temple and noticed a girl with brown hair, brown eyes, and pale skin with a scarf wrapped around her neck. That must be the girl she was supposed to train. "Hello," she said calmly. "Are you Jade Hart?"

[Jade Hart]

A robed girl showed up on the temple scene. She waved at Silex– Jade Hart, her nametag read. She had crownbraided hair but moved not like a queen– slouching low and stepping slow. Breathed like her lungs were butterfly wings, a figure cut from tissue paper. Expecting a heavenly greeting, some parting-of-the-clouds sunscrubbed angelic entry?

Jade walked up the lawn, the temple steps, coughing loud and wet, like being smacked. On cue, a pet monkey crawled from out her back, jumping to the ground, running around Silex’s legs. It sniffed her like a steak dinner, about to get out forks and knives. “TOM”, Jade said. “I’m sorry, he’s not well trained.” The monkey abandoned Silex and fistbanged the ground, ricocheting atop Jade’s head. From there it undid the braids and pretended they were remote controls for an X-wing.

"Maybe you can train him in the Jedi arts too?"

Silex raised an eyebrow as the sickly girl walked up to her. "Ah, I'm sorry, I do not train monkeys." she said, giving the girl a smile. She eyed the girl with curiosity. "My name is Silex Tan, you certainly do not have to call me master unless you have an incurable urge to do so in which case I will not stop you," she said, trying to be funny a little to break the ice. "What do you know about the Force already?" she asked; she didn't really know how to start with this whole training thing- her first master had decided the best path was to wear her out physically first.

"I want to learn how to use the force to control my emotions. That way I won't need him." The girl pat her monkey on its little monkey paw and smiled. "I can already use force pull and push." She thrust out her hand at a potted plant decorating the temple. The plant's leaves bristled, as if an invisible current of wind were flowing by it. Then it levitated a few inches above the stone floor. It was a full foot above the ground, floating in midair. "Can you do that?" she asked.

Silex smiled to herself. She lifted a finger and Jade's feet left the ground. She floated a couple feet above the ground for a couple seconds before Silex gently set her down. "You use too much theatrics with your hands. If you want to call the Force, the Force will come to you without you having to lift a finger. Focus on strengthening your mind. Save the theatrics for later," she said. "I can certainly help you with your emotions- follow me," she said, walking back into the temple towards a training room with mats on the floor.

Jade floated back down to the ground. She looked at her hands, the lines running crisscross over her palms. Sighing, she followed Silex into the temple and sat down on one of the mats. "Ok then," she said, fingering the scarf on her neck. "Help me."
In the distance, the shattering of a ceramic pot reverberated throughout the temple.

Silex sat down across from Jade. "Close your eyes and take deep breaths until you've calmed yourself, and you can feel the Force around you without physically reaching out for it," she said. She hoped she was explaining this right. "Tell me when you can feel it," she said, lowering her voice as she relaxed a little herself.

 

[Jade Hart]

Jade concentrated and inhaled in and out. Her robe rippled. The scarf seemed to breathe on its own, a great filter that passed the world through itself and returned it much the same but reduced and lessened. Somewhere, a lightbulb flickered. Somewhere, a child’s parent jumped off a bridge.
"It feels like a wet snake," she said.

Silex cocked her head curiously. A wet snake... she remembered she had first felt the force as a rock to be thrown at her enemies. Now, she felt it as a warm blanket that tended to be stifling. "I guess it feels different for everybody. How could you use it to... say, float in the air? Use your concentration and see what happens,"

As Silex watched Jade, the girl sighed. Was Jade understanding the lesson, or would she fail the most basic of force techniques? Had Silex chosen the wrong apprentice? The force was often a reflection of the turmoil in one's heart. Still, it appeared Jade was not completely hopeless- her body now levitating a few inches above the mat.
"Okay, a little weird. I feel like I'm about to fall off a cliff if I lose focus," Jade said.

Silex smiled. "You're doing good for your first time. Don't worry, you won't fall off a cliff- you just need to feel more certain in your abilites. That takes time," Silex was about to give more advice when her holoscreen lit up with a notification from her friend, Edaara. She raised an eyebrow. This would probably be for the better- she felt at a loss for words at the moment. "How would you like to go on a mission?"

 

[Jade Hart]

Jade jolted awake and tumbled down to the mat. "Ok, why not," she said. She got up and stretched her arms and legs.
"Monkey," she called. "Where are you?" But it did not come.

 

[Silex Tan]

"Try reaching out for him with the Force," Silex said as she stood up. "If you can't find him right now, he will be safe on the planet- it would probably be better for him to stay here, anyway," Silex said. "We are going on the mission with my friend Edaara and her new padawan," she said, repeating what little information Edaara had given.

Silex was about to move forward but paused as an alert lit up her screen, covering the message Edaara had sent her. As many Jedi as could come were needed on Kashyyyk- the Sith had struck. Silex looked up to Jade who was expectantly looking at her. "Change of plans," she said, her demeanor changing instantly from calm and happy to tense and ready to fight. "We're going to Kashyyykk,"
