Teodoro Costa
Engineer

Payment

A man nearing his thirties sits down in front of you. He's wearing a black padded vest, the kind metalworkers use to protect their clothing. Under that is a worn, but undamaged jacket, also black. You can see a blaster under the vest, poorly hidden in a worn leather holster. He has a patchy beard that would have been nice if it hadn't been burnt off. He extends his left hand and shakes your own, "Hey, how's it goin'? I'm Teo," He doesn't wait for an answer. "You called me about those ship repairs on that piece of yours. She's a nice one ya know, you kept her in good shape for the most part. She had less dings than an Alderaanian Corvette." He's obviously kissing your ass but you just sit there and smile.

"Anyway, you want to know how much it'll cost ya right? Right now it'll run ya about five hundred for a few parts and repairs, but I can give ya' deal if you'll give me an extra two hundred. I can put this nice new little piece in your hyperdrive. It's this military grade coolant that'll keep the engine from runnin' too hot when you go light speed." He leans a little closer though, as if he was letting you in on a big secret, "but the thing is, those kinds of mods aren't exactly straight edge. But," He looks to the left and right. "I can get you a license for that kind of stuff, I used to be an engi. before the Alsakan thing started. I can print you a license for grade C modifications. It'll run ya fifty credits, but it's worth it like hell. So all together that'll run ya'..."

His eyes dart towards the ceiling and he starts snapping his finger quickly. "Seven fifty right? And I'd told ya that it would probably ring you about eight hundred when I met your friend. So how's that for a deal."

You hand him the credits, in cash. He counts them quickly and slips them inside a vest pocket. "Pleasure doing business with ya'." You can drop by the garage to pick 'er up. I've got a vid feed if you wanna' check up on 'er. It goes straight to the garage where you can watch us work, live." He hands you a cheap vid display. It shows a team of men working on what looks like an old republic ship.

"Right there is my ship, she looks beat up, but I bet she can run smoother than any ship in the galaxy. You can switch the display when you want. It goes over to the garage where your ship is sitting. When I get back I'll start working on her. So you can drop by when it says I'm done." He realizes it's probably time for him to go. "Hey, I'll see ya' later." Getting up, he gives a two fingered wave and walks away.

The New Guy

You park your speeder in the employee parking section of a run down peace of crap. The place looks like crap, but a guy told you that the place only takes the best gear-heads. 'The Garage' still looks like crap.

The door slides open lazily, why is this in such crappy condition? It would take no time to fix, laziness. You step through the doors to find the waiting room in similar disdain. The woman behind the desk looked like she belonged on a street corner. She glances up at you but goes back to her reading. Quickly you walk up to her, "Miss, I'm here to see Mr.Costa." You see the irony in the name no one else probably sees it.

"Yeah, go through the door he should be in the office. New guy, eh?" She looks you up and down with renewed interest, apparently his arrival had been foreseen. You walk past her and into the hallway, that door was lazy too. There is a tile floor here, it looks less run down, but still not all that nice. You read a sign carved on a square of scrap metal. Obviously this place was cheap as hell too, you almost regret wanting a job here. The first office door has a name written in black letters.

Costa

You knock on the door lightly. You hear a shuffle of papers and something heavy. "Open it, you know you don't have to knock." You open the door toa dark skinned man grinning. He busts out laughing, you don't get it. "Umm... Hello, Mr.Costa?" He starts laughing again, obviously something about you amuses him.

"Come on in kid. You're the guy that want to be the new twitch?" He says it like you should know what he means, obviously you don't. "You don't get it... New guys. Alright." He reaches into the stack of papers and pulls out a small hand-held computer. After a few clicks and a moment of waiting he holds the hand-held out to you. "Fill this out. And close the door." You grab the hand-held first, then you slide the door shut behind you.

"My name is Johnathan Greer." You introduce yourself and stick out your hand to shake. He returns the handshake with his left hand. He grasps the back of your hand and gives it a good squeeze. He notices you cringe and smiles.

"I'm Teodoro Costa, don't call me Mister, just Teo." He pulls out a small case and opens it so that you can't see whats inside. "You don't mind if I work do you?" He starts working anyway.

"Umm...sure." You say, this guy is a little weird. It's his damn place why does he have to ask to do anything? Some people are so strange.

He pulls out a gun and a few tools, the gun has been dissembled and he is replacing a few key parts. It's good quality slug-thrower, he must be modifying it for someone. "Finished," You hand over your personal information. Teo look up and takes it. He glances over it for a moment, making a few faces and clicking on the page a few times.

"So you were a mech. for the republic? Heh, I used to be one of those." You smile, someone you can relate to. "I was assigned here and on a few planets in the Corellian system. Real nice work it is with the republic. The foods good and the pay is good for Gear-heads. What did you do?"

"I worked on ships after the attack by the Alsakans, I did a lot of internal ship repair. Mainly on the frigates." You feel a stream of pride, it's not every day that you get asked about your work in the Republic military.

"I like that. You're hired." He stands and shakes your hand, this time you return the gesture with your left hand, this time it feels less awkward. "I can start you today if you'd like, oh and I need someone to fix the lazy doors in the lobby..."

Twenty Years

Twenty Years of this. Twenty years of stealing, killing, lying. Taking skills learned from years of service to the republic and now I'm getting old. My body is half prosthetic. Most of my organs were destroyed by blasters. I look and move like everyone else, I'm just a little tired.

I'm still with the Capo. Pok is a good guy. He'll outlive me, most of the other humans in the original crew are dead now. Only a few of us left.

It's hard to think of it though. I've spent twenty years and I've mastered my art. I don't think I've met a man or machine that knows more than me about a gun or ship. I've flown them all, we stole most of the ones worth flying too.

Enough of my old-man talk, get out of here.

Machine

Now I sit more man than machine. It's official, I'm no longer human. I no longer have any part of my body not supported by a machine. I still have flesh, but that is only bone and some flesh. My face is a synthetic fiber. It only feels like skin. I don't bleed red anymore, I bleed black, like oil.

This is no curse, it is a blessing. I am superior to any of your droids, I can judge any situation for factors that no man can program. The human intellect is so much more powerful than anyone gives it credit. I pity the fool who gives up his humanity for the machine.

Regret and Renewal

I regretted the path I took. I wasted time, time I could be using. I'm feeling the end, it's not here yet. I know I'll be dead in the decade. I've decided to get a real job, I am overqualified for about anything these days.

Jade Galactic treats me well, I feel a new energy as I build ships I could only have dreamed of when I was in the republic. Jade Galactic is where I will make my Masterpiece.

Wealth of Nations

Age: 53

It has taken decades of work and dedication, sacrifices that none would risk. I came out on top where others failed. Influence which has taken generations to build I have taken for myself in a fraction of time. I've been lucky too, without luck I would have failed like others around me. I'm one of the few who's name will live on in history, my name will be that of death and savor.

I will make Jade look like a failed upstart.
