Test Fire (Midnight Men)

Suzie had toiled away for the past few days in the weapons lab at the Midnight Men base. The guys there had given her all the room she needed, especially after she dragged one of them out of the lab by the ankle after he dropped a canister of tibanna gas all over new plans, the lab had had to be evacuated for several hours before the clean-up crew would let them back in. But finally she had it. A prototype for her new Laser Sniper Rifle, along with a couple of surprises for the Midnight Man. She activated the comm vid.

Hey. Mister Man. I got your new weapon for you. Come take a look.

 

[The Balance]

Daniel and Adriana had just left the base, and Kyle was just about to take a stroll of his own, when he heard over his commlink the voice of Suzie. She had said something about the weapon she designed being done. This was right on time because the new shipment of Tibanna gas had just come in. He walked into the work room and said, "Well suzie show me how far along the gun has got."

Suzie lifted the first of three new weapons off the work bench. VX01Mk2 was printed on the casing.

I had to design a new weapon for you, the original one is still too dangerous for the masses and I need to field test it more. This is what you'll be mass producing for your army. The Vee Ecks Zero One Mark Two Plasma Assault Rifle. Your standard medium assault blaster rifle with a few ammendments. I've upped the output so that it's a bit more deadly than what even your average Mando carries, it's only problem is that it tends to overheat if you don't ease off the trigger every now and then.

She walked over to the make-shift range she'd set up and took aim. With a squeeze of the trigger, the rifle emitted several bright orange balls of plasma energy and disintegrated the target at the end of the range.

The colour is the result of the alteration to the gas chamber filtering system. I've designed it so that the tibanna destabalises slightly as it is converted from gas to plasma. More deadly that way.

As kyle saw it he was impressed, this new weapon would surely help out in the fight against corruption. As the orange ball of plasma hit the target and the target disintegrated, he was assured in his belief. He was excited to see things turning toward their favor now, but he did not let his excitement show, speaking to Suzie as calm as ever he said, "Good job, how many have you made so far, we will do prices later."

Suzie laughed and smiled, oh so eager he must be. She placed the rifle back on the bench and picked up the next weapon. VY01Mk6 was printed on the casing of this one.

That's the only working model at the moment. I've already handed the specs to your engineers for production. I also gave them the specs for this little thing. The Vee Why Zero One Mark Six Blaster Pistol. This piece is tried and tested in the field. I've used one for the past two years and had no trouble with it. Again, slightly more powerful than the standard pistol you'll see on the markets today. Though no problems with overheating this thing.

She squeezed off a couple of shot at a new target and then tossed it to him.

He caught the blaster pistol and tossed it between his hands for a few moment, then without warning he pulled it up and with precise aim hit the bulls-eye on the target, on the make-shift range. He had seen that the weapon had done more damage than a normal pistol, he holstered it tossing aside his old one. "Suzie, you have done well, I assume you have given my engineers the schematics to the rifle." he paused for a second, "And now about your pay, how much?"

We'll talk prices in a minute. First let me show you this.

She touched a button on her wrist mount and dissappeared from sight. After activating her personal stealth field generator, she quietly picked up the final weapon from the work bench. The weapon itself had a built in adaptor that worked in conjunction with a PSFG, thus it also dissappeared. Suzie let him stand there for just under a minute, it's amazing how long a minute seems to last when someone is showing you weapons and has dissappeared from sight. Finally, the third and final target at the end of the range exploded for no apparent reason. Suzie deactivated her PSFG and appeared at the back of the room, away from the work bench and couple of meters behind the Midnight Man.

Allow me to present the Vee Vee Zero One Mark One. Experimental Stealth Laser Sniper Rifle. This is the only model and there will be no others. This is the weapon I showed you the design of earlier. I've not worked out all the bugs and it still need a proper field test. This rifle isn't a standard rifle at all. It's actually a laser weapon rather than the standard plasma or particle types and doesn't use tibanna. I can't tell you the gas this uses because I promised my source I wouldn't.

Suzie picked up the weapon and then vanished, the weapon doing the same. Kyle of course knew that she was using a stealth generator. Then in a few moments a target at the end of the range exploded, for no apparent reason, then it clicked not only could the rifle be invisible, but its shots could be too. She turned back visible and Kyle just stood there gawking, it was amazing, after waiting a few seconds he said, "Thats an amazing piece of weaponry you have there. Tell me when you have fixed all the bugs and we might be able to work something out."

Suzie held up a finger and shook her head, he almost white hair shaking slightly as she did.

Nah-ah. The deal was for one weapon to be mass produced, I've given you two. This one is mine and mine alone. What's the point of being an assassin if every other wanna-be has the same weapon as me? You get the assault rifle and the pistol, I get this and my fighter back. As for price, how about seven-hundred-and-fifty-thousand for the designs and exclusive right for production?

Even though the Midnight Men had a lot of credits, he did not like the thought of handing them out in such large amounts. Kyle said, "Listen here Suzie, while I must say that the weapons you have designed are amazing, you must take some things into consideration first. You must remember that we gave you the supplies to make mine and your weapons, you have already given my engineers the schematics to the weapons, and we have given your fighter back so we will give you 150,000 credits."

Suzie shook his hand and smiled. She was very happy with the Midnight Men. They'd made her quite rich and all she'd done was give them a couple of new weapons.

You've got yourself a deal Mister Man. Though I would prefer if you could transfer the funds electronically into these accounts. Carrying that much in hard cash is a very stupid thing to do.

She handed him a datapad with details of about fifty different 'off-world' accounts on it.

Now, about my service with your group. I've got some bussiness to take care of before I can join permenantly, but once I've taken care of it I'd be more than happy to come play. Especially if it means seeing Adriana again...

Suzie hadn't realised she'd said the last sentance until it was too late. She blushed slightly, her cybernetic tattoos standing out even more than normal as she did so.

He took the offworld accounts and delivered the money into ten separate accounts. He handed the list back to Suzie, but as she uttered her last words he was dumbstruck. "What is that last part supposed to mean?" He had noticed the tattoos on her body were becoming bolder, he had never really payed much attention to them before, but now he realized what they meant.

Damnit, he heard. She thought to herself, blushing even more now than before. Her cybernetic tattoos kicked in though and regulated the flow of blood to her face and she once again became pale. Those implants had cost her dearly but had been worth it to be able to auto-regulate her body temperature and heat signature, the implants kept her body at ambiant temperature so that she barely showed up on thermal imaging, but she did hate it when she was on a cold planet, she'd had to take inhibiters when she'd been sent to Hoth once.

Oh, nothing. She just seems like an interesting kinda girl. Not often you get to meet girls about my age in my line of work, it'd be nice, that's all.

She hoped that would put him off asking any more awkward questions, she didn't like it to be well know that she held no attraction to men.

"Oh okay then, hope the mission goes well" Kyle replied, and with that he left to go for a little joy ride in a small transport. But Kyle knew what Suzie had really meant, she was a lesbian but he did not want to provoke her with awkward questions

Suzie laughed a little and headed for the hanger bay. Her fighter had been delivered as promised and was in slightly better shape than when she left it. She packed away her belongings and her new stealth rifle, made some pre-flight checks, including scanning for tracking devices, of which she found two and destroyed them. Waving to the ground crew and telling them to stoke her a kipper, she'd be back for breakfast, she slipped into the pilot seat and initiated her engines. Soon she was streaming through hyperspace.
