We don't.

We generally try to avoid eras in which canon characters could bump up against site story.

We've had that in the past, but it's not the same Empire and Rebellion from the original trilogy. There's too much canon stuff going on in that era which makes it practically impossible for us to RP around, and it means that almost nobody can RP as Jedi or Dark Siders, which is what many people want to do. It just doesnt work well with the size and variety of our community or our RP style.

It is extremely unlikely, but please focus on the next TL and not the ones that will come after. We don't know how long TFS is going to last and we have certainly not started planning for another TL anytime soon. It requires a tremendous amount of work.

Late question here, might have already been asked/answered, but I didn't see anything regarding it in the announcement itself: what will be the verdict on more "exotic" armor materials like cortosis and phrik? Would it be safe to assume those would fall under the category of needing to be obtained through the RP?

Cortosis/Phrik rules are not changing much, if at all. Melee weapons will remain LS resistant as standard, and small portions of armor can be LS resistant just like now, though some armor making use of it may still need to be gained through RP. It only makes sense, considering the 100 years of galactic scale war between laser sword weilding psychos.
