As Senate sessions went, things went by more smoothly than he had expected. There were discussions, there were a few heated voices, but things continued moving. The proposal was discussed, and one by one the votes came in. And much to Caliban's relief, the proposal passed. Already, the refined approach was working. If the whole senate had been here things would not have moved so quickly. But with select representatives present, the wheels of democracy had moved at a relatively blinding pace.

"The motion passes to formalize the creation of the Galactic Senate passes." The moderator droid made the announcement once the votes had been tallied, formalizing what most already knew form observing the votes. "The Free Worlds, the Independent Systems Consortium, and the Jedi will constitute the initial membership of the body, with applications open for further membership. Furthermore, each body shall retain its own sovereign independence, and continue operating under its own guiding principles. Full documentation of the bill is being dispatched to all present now, this session is hereby closed."

Cal leaned back in his seat as the the room erupted into applause and chatter. The first step had been taken, but there was enough dissent today that he knew that he could not relax. The real work was just beginning.

Well, that was democracy in action. Oluma may not have agreed with the outcome at all, or with the commentary from the esteemed master Jedi, but it was clear that she had backed the losing orbak in this race. Even Senator Jakar had changed his position on the issue, leaving her as the primary dissenting voice in the room, and she knew full well what happened to dissenting voices in public discourse, they became the bad guy.

She joined in the applause for a while, but once the cheers died down and the doors opened for the delegations to leave, her aide called a cab to take them to the nearby spaceport. Thankfully, with the slight delay, Oluma managed to blend into the back of the crowd of likewise defeated representatives, and make it to her cab in relative peace. The front steps were packed with reporters both legitimate and otherwise, so she was glad for her quick and unimpeded escape.

As the cab pulled away, Oluma pondered what she had just seen happen. On the one hand that was perhaps the most streamlined and rapid voting action she'd seen in years. On the other hand, representation was now on an organizational basis and the Jedi, an organization she hoped to keep out of politics, now had the same voice in the new Senate as the sovereign governments of worlds. Events were moving faster than she expected and in directions she was not prepared for, she would need time to process this and prepare to move forward.
