The night was ominously dark, though moonlight shone here and there between the thick branches of the canopy overhead. This deep in the forest the shadows were much more prevalent than the meager light of the moon, however. A freezing wind blew incessantly through the trees, setting their branches to scraping and clawing at one another. There was no birdsong this late at night, though the lonely sound of a single owl on the hunt could be heard occasionally in the distance.
Brenna Ylva brushed her long hair out of her eyes and behind one ear. Then she took a better hold of her blaster rifle and fired two quick shots at the locking mechanism on the old doors she faced. They were set low to the ground, and she probably wouldn't have been able to find them at all if not for the location being marked specifically for her. With a loud hiss of decompression, the old worn down doors creaked open and she pushed her way inside. An old metal ladder descended into deeper darkness.
Brenna couldn't help but feel a tiny voice in the back of her head telling her to turn around and forsake this stupid mission. What was she to gain, after all? So-called power? As if she wanted any part of that. But she'd been sent here to find a way into some ancient ritual chamber through the catacombs of this old dwelling. She'd been sent to do a job and as always she would do it. She had no choice. Heaving an exasperated sigh at herself, she slung her blaster rifle on one shoulder and climbed down the ladder. Turning, she saw an old tunnel lined with rock leading away ahead of her. Moss grew on the slimy walls and she could hear the sound of water dripping somewhere in the distance. There was only one direction to go, so she headed off blaster in hand once more.
