Hi everyone
So, I've had much trouble trying to get involved with the current timeline since it started last year, but the other night I finally hit upon inspiration to do something.
We all know how Jedi are basically Space Samurai, right? Well, my idea was for a cultural counterpart: Instead of being Space Samurai Buddhists, these guys would be modeled after European knights. Basically, actual Crusaders IN SPEHSS!!
But here's where it actually gets interesting: These guys, with their own philosophy on the Force (that is loosely modeled on Christianity instead of the standard Asian-influenced views of the Force, with the Ones as central figures-- hence the name, the Paladins of Mortis) split off from the Jedi millennia ago and have been isolated for a long time in the Unknown Regions, which led to the development of a distinctly feudal culture with noble houses, knighthood in the medieval style, longstanding Force-sensitive dynasties and all that, with the Paladins being purely-- almost fanatically-- aligned to the Light Side of the Force due to a schism similar to the Jedi and Sith long ago.
In short, their faith teaches that a supreme deity, The Maker Of All (name pending in case I find something cooler), created the universe and everything in it. The Force is merely one aspect of the Maker, with the Father, a physical manifestation of balance in the Force and of the Maker himself, being made and creating the Son and Daughter to teach mortals how to use the Force. But the Son grew proud and envious, corrupting mortals to the Dark Side, and the resulting clashes resulted in the Ones being sealed away in Mortis. According to the Paladins, when they die they don't simply become one with the Force, but will be brought to Mortis in the Final Days and face the Son and his followers in a final battle to restore balance to the Force.
They've emerged in the Galaxy proper due to a cataclysmic war with HERETICAL SON-WORSHIPPING DARKSIDERS that greatly weakened both sides and, in the case of the Paladins, led to this group being reduced to the numbers necessary to have an Indie faction... provided this can get off the ground. They're not just interested in upholding peace and justice, or even conquest-- they're interested in actively spreading their faith to Force-sensitive and not alike, by good works as well as the blade; and the utter extermination of any and all Darksiders. But of course, they need to get their shit together first before any glorious crusading can begin.
The overall intent of this faction is to provide a new flavor, a new spin of sorts, on not just the way the Force is viewed by characters, but also the kinds of organizations that adhere to it (for example, most of the Paladins do not use lightsabers but vibroweapons, and those that do use crossguard sabers). I find the idea of a feudal group entering the Galaxy and needing to adapt after some serious culture shock to be very intriguing, and I hope you guys do too.
It's kind of rough in my head, and needs some ironing out, but that's why this thread is here-- if anyone is interested and has any questions or suggestions, I'm happy to hear them.
