Do they have to join the Stormtrooper corps, or are they just part of the general Imperial Military? If the former my character needs downgrading to an enlisted rank so's he can be the buckethead he is.

I think that your fine as is Denzein. I don't think that your character needs to be part of the Stormtrooper corps to still fly.

TIE fighter pilots are part of the regular Imperial Navy, though Stormtroopers can also be TIE pilots.
