Raxus - Garrison Command

Commander Jonathen Baize sat in his new office in Garrison Command, going through reports. It had not been an easy transition for the last couple of months, but he was not one to take these sorts of things lying down. He had set to his work diligently; the last Commander in his post was sloppy and extremely lax with his command, which ended when Jon had taken over. There had been grumbles, but compliance had followed once they figured out he wasn't going anywhere.

Part of his new role was keeping an eye on the Empire's large but still rebuilding logistics infrastructure. The sudden exodus of many planets had split the Empire in two; it was not an easy task to keep supplies and trade running between the two halves.

As Jon acclimated himself to his new role, it didn't take long before he began noticing a troubling trend. They were missing shipments, it wasn't much in the grand scheme of things, but something had stuck out to the Commander. The more he looked into it, the more he was convinced something odd was going on.

Deciding this needed to be looked into further, he had called a friend within the ISB to come take a look. She would have access to more intelligence than she would and be much more practiced in teasing these sorts of things out. They had worked together before; he trusted her. If there was something here, they would find it.

He tapped a finger, looking at the reports again and then at a map that had charted all of the ship's last known locations before disappearing.

Raxus was like a second home to Guinevere, a place she was spending more and more time of late. Both on official duty and spending time with her family. It seemed that no matter what she did, nor how hard she tried, there was always some bigger fish or dead end getting in the way of solving a big case she was working on.

It was quite a relief when she heard from Jon and his request for her assistance on something he was working on himself. The change in scenery and an opportunity to sink her teeth into something new and exciting was a welcome prospect and she promptly made herself available.

Walking in with a large briefcase in one hand and her cap in the other, Guin looked a little rough around the edges but that didn't stop her bright smile from shining through. "Commander Baize, it's good to see you again." Setting the case down near a terminal, and sitting down in front of it she spun the chair around. The next pause lasted a second or two as she weighed her words carefully due to the raw subject, "I heard what happened on Dathomir, and the rest...for what it's worth, it hasn't changed my opinion of you."

She somehow suspected he didn't wish to discuss that matter in-depth, after all, he had called her here to solve a riddle of sorts. The complex mess of logistical routes, starship plans, and data was a complex messy soup but if someone could make sense of it all, she could. With a compassionate smile abound, she watched and waited for him to explain what he'd found already.

He smiled as she entered, standing as she approached the desk. "Agent Delevigne, its been too long," he said with a slight nod. She looked like she hadn't slept the best of late, but Jon had been in the same boat, so they made a perfect pair in this regard.

Her next words dampened his smile. "I appreciate that, Guin, thanks," he said with a half smile. Guin was one of Kali's closest friends, and Jon had previously worked with the woman on the training mission. He respected her, and her words held weight with him. The moment passed, and Jon's previous smile came back out. "Thanks for coming so quickly. I could sure use your help." he said, leaning against his desk.

He took a datapad and handed it to her. "I started here a few weeks ago, but I quickly noticed that we had a handful of transports leaving here towards the other half of the Empire that never made it." he said. "I do understand the ship's go missing from time to time but when you dig it to what was actually being done about it, you quickly hit a brick wall. Its like someone is purposefully burying this, or at least that's what it feels like to me." he explained.

"Maybe you can see something I am not.." he said, giving her a moment to look the datapad over.

The warmness in her face didn't change as he continued to describe the problem at hand. Logistics and the mountain of paperwork that went with it was often the most boring and thankless job there was, but without a good hand guiding it, the whole empire could come to a screeching halt. And that was why it was so damn important that they got to the bottom of this issue promptly.

If it was just a typo in the paperwork, that was one thing, and easily fixed but anything more serious could have lingering consequences if not sorted out before the problem grew. Taking a brief look over the datapad she saw lines and data galore, as expected. "What makes you say that?" The information would take a while to properly digest but from the cursory glance that she was undertaking, everything seemed to check out.

Ship A departed point A, arriving at point B to deliver its goods and take on cargo for the return trip and everything seemed to be in order at least to the untrained eye. If it wasn't recorded that a ship arrived at its destination, it would instantly cause a red flag of attention to be cast down upon it. Any sinister plot would have to account for this in some way.

"Everything seems to line up properly, I don't..." As Guin scrolled through the historical data, something interesting caught her eye and caused her to pause mid-sentence.

It was almost nothing, a detail so minute that she couldn't have blamed Jon for missing it but something that now stood out to her quite intensely. "The transports making these runs change all the time, almost never completing loops but leaving for other systems. You'd never notice one going missing if you didn't expect it back, right?" Turning the datapad back around for him to take a look, she had highlighted a few entries.

None of the transports were uniform except for a general average size that would allow them to hold approximately the same amount of cargo. What had actually caught her attention was how there were just slightly more transports leaving one side of the empire than departing. That would make sense, if the cargo didn't arrive they would have to hire another transport to move the cargo from the destination.

But you'd think that cargo not arriving would also raise red flags, and by the looks it was marked as delivered which meant that someone was wrong, but who?

"A gut feeling?" he answered with a bit of a shrug. "Something just looks off to me," he said, tapping his leg. "I wasn't exactly trained for this..." he said.

Jon then sat silently, continuing to tap his leg as she read through the data. It took a while, naturally. When she finally did speak up, his attention snapped back to her. As she started to explain that everything looked in order, he sank a little. He could have sworn he saw something amiss in the jumble of information.

She paused, causing him to lift an eyebrow. "Most of the time, we only track military ships; a large number of civilian freight contractors are largely untracked," he admitted.

"Well, yes. We would know because the cargo never arrived, and the money wouldn't have been paid out," he added. The money was being paid out, though. "Well, what got me looking into this in the first place, was a complaint of a missing shipment of drill parts headed for Entralla. I just happened to be looking at it when it came in. Within five minutes, it was updated as an error, and the cargo was marked as delivered. I assumed it was fine at the time, but maybe..." he paused.

"Can you narrow down our search with those parameters? Shipments that were marked not delivered but then corrected as delivered?" he asked. It was casting a wide net, mistakes happened frequently, but maybe it would narrow their search slightly.

Guin listened as Jon explained a bit more about the shipping details that had originally caught his attention. Focusing on these parts would indeed help, although it did risk other similar shipments disappearing through the net if they were changed under different circumstances. But what they needed more than that, was actually figuring out if this was a legitimate concern or just a simple rounding error somewhere.

Taking the datapad back, Guin nodded to his suggestion and began typing away fervently. "Hmm," she said with a little surprise at the revelation itself. "I found the one you mentioned, but it doesn't look to be an isolated event." Several such logs showed hidden traces of being adjusted in a way that wouldn't have caused any concern or appearance of ill intent. With the web of logistics being what it was in the remnants of the war, people seldom looked at the finer details of every little thing these days.

"I'm seeing shipments of raw materials for Liannan factories, surplus military equipment, and everything in between. There doesn't seem to be another link to it other than their delivery status being changed." The more they looked, the more suspicious Guin started to get and Jon would see it in her absolute attention being given now.

"Nothing in these deliveries is immensely valuable, in fact, they're so unimportant that nobody would notice if they simply vanished." This implication, as she looked back toward Jon directly, was startling. Throwing caution to the wind, she matter-of-factly asked what they both may have been thinking. "Who would have access to change the designations on this base?" To put these accusations into action would be testy if not dangerous if heard by the wrong person.

Tapping away at the keypad, she attempted to figure out where the latest one had originated from but the data appeared to be wiped. "Whoever it was has covered their tracks, but little do they know what tricks I have up my sleeve." In the perfect world, it would only be a single person that could do it and they'd have their person, but in reality, it could be tens or hundreds of people depending on if it originated from here or outside.

With Jon's permission, she'd plug her own datapad into the console and begin laying a simple tracing trap, with the intent of it providing a location the next time someone attempted to do such a thing. Then it would be up to Jon and his team to find them before they could escape.

Guin tapped away on the datapad, her face furrowing a bit as she started to focus. "That makes sense. If all of a sudden a shipment of high-value military tech went missing, we would know about it instantly," he said as she continued working.

"Thats a tough question to answer; there are a lot of people. Freight handlers on both ends of the route, many of the logistics staff here could do so. The system is supposed to capture user data and tag it to any entries or changes, though.." he explained.

He nodded when she explained back that the person or persons had to be hiding their tracks. That made sense to him, but how were they doing so, and how could they pick up on who was behind this?

When she gestured towards the console, he waved his approval. If she wanted to hack into his computer, she could have done so remotely, so this likely just made things faster. "We need a way to draw these people out and find out where along the line we are actually losing the missing cargo," he said, looking up from his own console towards her.

"Any ideas?"

As she suspected the list of potential troublemakers was far too long to simply walk around until they found someone doing something shifty. With the trap she planned to set, however, they wouldn't have to do any searching but instead just be able to sit back and let the shifty one come to them, in a manner of speaking.

“I have a few, actually.” Guin typed away, creating something from nothing, what she needed wasn't exactly a protocol already in place, but it wasn't too difficult to write the handful of lines of code on the spot. “I'll monitor the logs for editing and if anything along the lines of what we're watching happens, it'll tell me the console details.” An uncomfortable look crested her face, as if she was hesitant with this line of thinking, but perhaps it was more she didn't know how Jon would feel about it.

“Once we know the information, it might be too late to find out what happened to the transport, unless you can figure out a way to protect them without arousing suspicions.” In theory, he could stash a bunch of troopers on board, and have a TIE escort available, but the more assets they used, the greater the chances of spoiling the trap. “But before you go running off, I will need your help to locate and interrogate whoever it is we find.”

With the incident on Dathomir so fresh in mind, Guin wanted to keep Jon close and make sure he was properly alright. Having him run off to play hero was great in theory, but she wanted to spend more time with him first.

He listened as she explained her ideas. Her plan was sound enough, though it didn't quite sit right with him. Jon scratched his beard as he thought. "I don't much like sitting around while we lose another transport," he said, frown spreading across his face.

He thought for a moment before speaking. "They have to be marking these transports in some way. If we can find out how they are tagging these ships, we can delay them long enough to grab whoever is doing it; then we can fold the rest of the up," he said.

"I know I am asking a lot, but I think we should at least try. If not, I will have a team on standby in case your search comes up with a hit. We will be ready to move it immediately." he said. This was a bit more palatable to him. They could do something until they lost another ship. If he knew that if anyone could crack the code, it was her.

The next part was hell for him, sitting. Jon wanted to go out and shake some trees until something fell apart. He wasn't an investigator, or at least he hadn't been. His instincts were to identify the threat and eliminate it. He was no good at this cloak-and-dagger stuff.

Ten minutes went by, Jon's leg bouncing out of bordem. "Is that what you do all the time?" he asked, looking up at Guin, who was deep in her datapad.

It would be comical to compare the differences between the two, one agent and one commander who saw the same goal through separate lenses. She couldn't pull rank, even if she wanted, given his superior status and so his wishes held a lot of weight. But there was also the human element, even if she felt her plan was more effective, albeit more risky.

"We will try." She remarked reluctantly, the delay could cause issues of its own and run afoul of the plan, but Jon was right. There were innocent people in those transports and if they could save them it would be worthwhile even if it potentially interfered with the rest of the plan.

Ten minutes of knuckle dragging went by as the agent made alterations to the plan, lost within thought and almost forgetting that she did in fact have company when she heard him suddenly speak. "Yeah, I guess so." It was kind of funny when she thought about it. "While you're out there saving the empire with a gun, I'm doing the same with a keypad."

But it wasn't all bad, other than the long nights in the office and having to learn each and every new piece of IT tech that came in, there were always opportunities for fun. "If it's not particularly busy, we get to work on side projects and the like. But we also have a club for things like board games. Why? What's life like for a Commander?"

Guin was quite good at multitasking and continued to work as their discussion progressed. Pulling a data stream onto a holo-projector near them, she started to explain. "So I checked the last ship that was marked as having delivered cargo following your parameters. This is the security footage we have of it before it left Raxus, tell me if you see anything suspicious or out of place, as you know the protocols better than I."

If they could identify someone or something that was causing the ship to be marked, it would go a long way to helping them stop the next one.

She seemed hesitant, and Jon understood that. The ISB was efficiency incarnate. They were certainly taking the more difficult route, but it had the chance of saving some lives.

He couldn't help but chuckle. "Is that what I am doing?" looking around, he wasn't even carrying a gun. That still felt odd most days carrying nothing but a blaster pistol. He had been chased away from the Garrison shooting range for using too much ammunition. It had not been an easy transition for him.

Jon leaned back in his chair slightly as she worked. "Board games, huh?" he said with another chuckle. They were truly from different worlds, but he enjoyed working with her. "It's something, for sure. For every minute I focus on one thing, another thing piles up. Do you have any idea how many things soldiers break? Its astounding we ever get anything done." he joked. "You'll understand soon enough, I'm sure. They are going to let someone like you linger as an agent for too long." he added.

When she pulled up the footage, he started looking through it. He figured he was being given work just to keep him busy. A bit later, he find something. A pair of stormtroopers were making rounds when one stopped to adjust his armor; the other one continued to walk. Once the other stormtrooper was away, the lingering one pulled something out and attached it to the freighters hull. "I can't see what that is, but he definitely placed something on the outside of the ship." he said. He started tapping on his own computer. "I can find those two stormtroopers who were assigned that patrol, and we could question them?" he asked. He left it open to suggestion, he was a higher rank, but the very reason he had asked for her to come was her expertise in this area.

As serious as the blonde was about her work, Jon always seemed to find the funny in the dreary. Despite all their differences, they would share a few chuckles and laughs in the intermediary period. At first, she thought he was about to roll out another banger when he started about her being an agent, but the tone and way he looked toward her revealed it as genuine.

"Eh, maybe, assuming I don't embarrass myself out of the job somehow." Even with all the good work she had been putting in, the prospect of promotion seemed daunting. She lived quite a happy life as largely a desk agent with a splashing of field work, the latter being a more recent addition. The added stress of increasing her responsibilities and, worse, potentially taking her away from the job she loved? That was a difficult decision to make, and her face showed it.

Listening to his observations about the stormtroopers was just the breakthrough that they needed to crack open the case. "That's a great idea, maybe check if they're on shift now? Perhaps we'll catch them in the act?" It was a long shot, but if they did figure out what kind of device it was, they'd be able to use it to bait whoever was supposed to receive the cargo.

"In the meantime, I'll set up a trace just in case someone else is also involved in changing the logs, assuming it isn't them of course." That way, her data pad would be notified of the intrusion, and they'd quickly narrow down their culprits.

He raised an eyebrow when she mentioned embarrassing herself out of a job. "What other person in your department can say jumped out a second-story window while under fire?" he asked as he leaned back in his chair. She had always seemed to sell herself a little short, at least in his own experience; it wasn't something he would allow on his watch!

Turning back to their work, Guin started to check if the stormtroopers in question were currently on patrol, which she would find they were. "We should go pay them a visit," he said, leaning over her shoulder to read the datapad. "Normally, I am more of a run-at-the-problem head-on kind of guy, but maybe we will do it the sneaky way today," he said. It was clear that whatever he had planned would involve her. She wouldn't get the chance to ride the desk today.

"Yeah...this is going to be fun..." he said, eyeing her for a moment. It was obviously a serious case, and he was taking it seriously, but at the same time, this was the most fun he had since he had been transferred.

"We need to get you some armor.." he said, looking her up and down. "Let's go," he said, heading off towards the armory. He had said the last time that he thought she could be a soldier if she wanted to, well today, she would get to wear the armor of one...

In Guin's defense she hadn't exactly been party to the decision to jump, but the thought did make crack a small smile and shrug playfully. The stormtrooper quarry they had now in their sights, and the last remaining touches on her programme set, mean that they would be ready to depart.

The prospect of lugging herself around in a set of unfamiliar armor was certainly not exciting, although she couldn't forget how doing so had previously saved her life after taking a blaster shot to the chest plate. With a tongue in cheek inflection, she muttered, "If you insist, sir." She had her suspicions that the troopers they were about to chase were in fact imposters, and therefore she couldn't say for sure that they wouldn't be dangerous.

With it being a garrison barracks, Jon surely had to suffer through being lower on the totem pole for equipment and vehicles, and the armoury was no different. Still, after a quick search, the agent was able to piece together items that didn't quite match in shape and size, but were practical enough that she wouldn't be inhibited for the most part. An unfortunate downside of being such a tiny person among soldiery kind, after all.

Pulling out her datapad and checking back in with Jon, the icons illuminated the last known positions of their targets. "Ready when you are. They're about to patrol the loading bays, if we hurry we might be able to arrive around the same time." Whether Jon was planning to go at this with just the two of them, or he had more elements ready to go, she could only guess. "Happy?" she smirked, referring to the armor.

Guin had picked up a blaster rifle and slid it into its stun setting, as she was more interested in what they had to say than putting a stop to it immediately. Hopefully, they wouldn't make this any harder than it had to be.

He shot her a wicked grin, noting the sarcasm in her tone. They quickly set off, it would take time to find the right armor, and they needed to be out there when the pair made their rounds in the hangars.

Once inside the armory, he helped to find mostly fitting armor. Normally this was a thing fitted to you, but they didn't really have that luxury, and she wasn't exactly the normal build of the typical Stormtrooper. He quickly put on armor, finding a much better fit for himself. He rounded the corner when she said she was ready and couldn't help the laugh that escaped her. The armor was all there, but he wasn't sure he had seen it look so unnatural on a person before. "You look...fierce..." he said with a slight pause.

"So happy." he said, noting he needed to get a picture of this to send to Kali before this was all over. "Let's go" he said, slinging a blaster over his shoulder.

Jon moved in the armor like he was born in it; he hardly even noticed it was there. He looked down at the shorter trooper. "Don't walk like that.." he said "You look so suspicious..." he continued. "Just act...natural." he finally said, showing her how a normal stormtrooper walked on patrol. "See?" he asked.

Standing there in full armor was such a strange out-of-place feeling for Guin, but she was determined to make it work. Walking at pace in the unfamiliar suit? Even harder! But luckily Jon was quickly there to help her fit in, as he always did. Focusing both on what he was saying and his demonstration, the agent started to smile as she caught up on the act, her cadence not perfect by any means, but she'd pass as a rookie for sure.

Guin kept finding herself being thrown into new territory, and the personal growth she had seen from this had been dramatic. She still felt quite far off from deserving such praise, but at the same time, she had been coming to grips with the slightly more confident version of herself.

A year ago it seemed unlikely that she would fit in as a soldier given her lack of experience, and being a little out of place. The thought giving her a funny remark to share if the shoes were on the other foot so to speak, "I'd like to see you try acting natural in heels and a dress."

Continuing in formation, they happened to pass by several other troopers without incident, their disguise and efforts to blend in holding up for the moment. With a private channel shared just to Jon, she kept her face forward. "Up ahead, two o'clock. You see them?" They just needed a way to separate these two from the others without arousing anyone's suspicions

To her credit, she picked it up pretty quickly, even with the somewhat mismatched amor. It wouldn't hold up against major scrutiny, but it wouldn't need to today.

He glanced over at her, raising an eyebrow, but it was unseen through the expressionless stormtrooper helmet. "I think I'd have the legs for it..." he laughed quietly. The mental image was pretty funny, and he certainly would not adapt as quickly as she was now.

They passed by several patrols, the other soldiers seemingly paying them no mind. Maybe Guin was doing that well, but these Stormtroopers were a little too lax in their observation skills. He made a mental note to check in on that later.

He nodded to her when she pointed their target troopers off to their right. They were about to enter the hangars as they approached. "Let's follow them from a distance and see if they approach any ships. We can flag those for thorough inspections to keep them from taking off." he kept his voice low, using their private coms.

The two stormtroopers turned into the hangar. They would hang back just a bit before entering. As they did, Jon snagged a clipboard from atop a nearby crate. They would be able to look like they were just inspecting cargo while keeping an eye out.

The clink clunk of her armored boots was a much different sound to consider when it was coming from one's own feet as opposed to hearing it as another passed you by. The familiar sound of a TIE buzzing by also made her wonder if the same would occur in one of those, having done zero hours in one.

As Jon picked up a clipboard, the agent flagged down a nearby stormtrooper that was passing by. "Corporal, pass the word out that Commander Baize will be making an inspection of the hangar in an hour, we heard it from the mess." The other stormtroopers halted in their march for a moment before the Corporal barked orders. "Double time squad, we've gotta get a half dozen transports loaded before he gets here, I ain't getting penalised for last shift's problems."

Watching as the squad hurriedly scramble back to work, the agent looked back at Jon for a moment with a curious smile buried under the helmet. Without him even asking, she answered why. "They clearly know what they're doing and have perfected their art." Shifting a box from one bench to another, she continued. "An hour is enough time that they won't be scared off, but simply knowing that it's coming will cause casternation and concern."

Casting occasional glances across the hangar, they'd see the word had already spread rapidly as each section picked up their paces. "And that's when they start making mistakes they wouldn't normally make." And it wouldn't take very long for that either.

From a distance they carefully watched as the two almost skittish troopers approached a transport finally. One was clearly attempting to cause a distraction, while the other poked and prodded around the cargo that was being loaded. Turning her head, Guin spoke through their private line. "Enough evidence for you? I'll send the messages, but first let's secure them before they get away."

As it was potentially about to draw into combat, Guin would let Jon take point for now.

There was an art to pretending like you were working without actually doing anything. Jon's nearly decade-long career had taught him this perfectly, first how to get away with it as a low-ranking soldier and then how to sniff it out as an officer. The key was a clipboard; you basically became a ghost when looking down at a clipboard in front of some crates.

He looked up a second later to see Guin approach the Corporal supervising this particular group of troopers. She spoke perfectly, and soon the room was thrown into a frenzy of movement as the NCO kicked his soldiers into gear. When she turned to face him, he gave a very subtle nod of his head. "Very clever..." he spoke quietly after she had explained. It was something he would not have thought of initially, so he was glad to have her along.

They watched on, the two traitors quickly seizing on the chaos to make their move. One pretended to knock something over while the other sidestepped and fastened something to the side of the crates.

"We will take them out in the hallway; we will need to get both of them so they can't get off any warnings," he said, waiting for them to circle back around. Guin said she was going to send the message, flagging the ship from being allowed to take off for the time being, so now all they needed to do was not let these guys get away.

Soon enough, both stormtroopers walked side by side toward the hangar door. After they passed, Jon and Guin would fall in behind them, keeping about twenty feet back.

They exited the hallway. "I'll take the one on the left." he whispered into his comms. "You take the one of the right. Just aim for his legs and then pin them." he said. There was no way he could take both out at the same time without a weapon, so he would have to trust in the Agent's combat training.

The pair of them started to moved a bit quicker, catching up to them. When they were about ten feet away, one of them turned around and clocked them. The traitor tilted his head for a second before going to bolt. "Now!" Jon yelled, surging forward.

The man on the left who had seen them tried to run, but Jon was faster and got tackled. Jon slammed the man into the ground as the other traitor fumbled for his blaster to shoot Jon as he was vulnerable.

Following in behind Jon, Guin felt her heart race as the anticipation of physically getting involved was becoming a reality and no longer just hidden behind the screens. It was a crazy moment, considering just a short while ago they had been pondering who, why and where these events had been taking place, and now they were poised to potentially get these answers.

Now, Guin had never been a heavy weight herself, and the prospect of battering down a person from behind seemed like a daunting task. As Jon explained the plan, she nodded with a slight hint of worry at the back of her mind. What if she simply bounced off the person and failed to catch them? Sure, Jon would certainly get one, but she didn't want to let him down.

In their final approach, she studied the way her target walked, hoping to find some cadence or insight about how to pull of this lunge successfully, when an idea suddenly hit her. Without warning, the traitors turned and made them, causing them to put the plan into action.

What Guin failed to consider was the additional mass that she had been hauling around that afternoon was significantly more than what she was used to. Jumping a little late, the agent fully intending to tackle her target by the ankles, ended up slamming into the from behind his knees, and causing the helpless man to tumble.

Almost crushing his legs under her weight, Guin was almost as stunned as he was that the little trick had worked. From behind, she attempted to hold him down while Jon could secure them. "Don't move, you're under arrest." she loudly proclaimed. Now they'd need to find a secure room from which to extract the information from them, ideally before it was too late.
