You ask me how I can believe in Gods in this day and age, rather than your own view of science and the 'Force'? I believe, because I see proof of their existence everywhere I turn. We do not shun science, nor do we believe it conflicts with our faith. In fact, with each scientific discovery we make, we come to understand the will of Elassah even further, we know her design to be even greater and more wonderful than we could have possibly imagined.

Even in the depths of space you can see her great plan unfold. Look at the stars, the givers of life. Even they are, in essence, living beings. They are born from the expelled mass of other, long dead, stars, they grow and change with age, they consume fuel like any other living creature, and then finally, they die in a blaze of unmatched glory, and in so doing, spread the seeds of all life across the galaxy. It is the ultimate expression of Elassah's will.

Like most Edemmians, Varrena genuinely believes in Elassah and the other gods of their people. But unlike most Edemmians, Varrena happens to be what non-Edemmians refer to as "Force Sensitive", and what the Edemmians refer to as 'Exalted'. As a result of this, and the fact that the Edemmians believe the Force to be a Gift from their Mother Goddess, Varrena's faith is all but unshakable. Varrena can literally feel the presence of the Gods, feel their power flowing through her, and glowing within all living things.

Varrena lives in some ways like an ascetic monk, where she seeks to prove the bond between her and her Gods through physical ordeals, and calling upon the Gift to sustain her and to see her through these trials. One of these trials includes the Path of the Drallare, where she walks through the vast swathes of desert that separates one Edemmian lake city from another, bringing no food, and only a single canteen of water. She believes that through these grueling tests and ordeals, she can purify herself and prove her devotion to the Gods, and Elassah in particular.

But, with some of that classic Edemmian pragmatism, she also knows that by pushing herself to her most extreme limits, she is able to discover exactly what she is and isn't capable of, with and without the Gift to support her. And it is, of course, another way for her to satisfy her species' universal craving for adrenaline rushes.

Varrena grew up in an ordinary home on Edem, with a perfectly ordinary family in Nesharra, the capitol city of the aforementioned planet. One of Varrena's fathers belonged to a very select group of people on Edem, namely the Grove Tenders.

On Edem, when one passes away, your remains are gathered up and buried in one of the many funeral groves that grow on the shores of the twelve lakes, and the sapling of a fruit-bearing tree is planted on top of your relatively shallow grave. In death, you help a new life grow, and as the sapling grows, it will in turn feed future generations. As such, being a Grove Tender is an honourable and noble profession, part gardener and part priest.

Growing up, Varrena frequently accompanied her father in his work, and assisting as much as a one-tailed pup could. One day, a couple of months before the sprouting of her second tail, Varrena witnessed the burial of an Exalted. Granted, while working with her father, she'd seen several burials over the years, but the death of an Exalted was a decidedly rare thing.

Instead of having a sapling planted over their shallow grave, the staff of the fallen exalted is planted there instead. And as Varrena watched, the staff immediately began to sproutand grow, sinking roots into the earth, branches and leaves extending from the upper half of the wooden weapon that had been carried by the deceased Exalted through all of her adult life. Unlike the rest of the trees in the Grove however, those marking the resting sites of an Exalted were exclusively tended to by other Exalted, which meant that her father never brought the young Varrena to tend to the staff tree.

But ever since watching it be planted, she'd always felt herself drawn to that specific tree. So, one day when her father was occupied tending to one of the other trees, Varrena snuck away from his supervision, occupied though it was, and sought out the special staff tree she'd felt so drawn towards. While the tree was in perfect health, and had plenty of foliage and a deep and rich root system, it had yet to bloom, and the Exalted always spoke in hushed tones near it, their ears drooping. Clearly the chosen children of Elassah had some concerns about her special tree.

As she approached the tree, she only felt that pull become stronger and stronger. Soon enough, her body was moving as if on it's own as she got closer and closer to the tree, until she could reach out and let her fuzzy fingers brush against the smooth, hard, wooden surface of the staff-turned-tree. In that moment, her universe expanded beyond her own wildest dreams. It was suddenly as if she could understand some of Elassah's grand design, see the very fabric of life as it unfolded around her. She could see it pulsate within her father tending to his duties, within herself, and especially within the tree before her.

In addition, the tree suddenly began to bloom. Several large, fragrant flowers emerged, as the spirit of the staff's former owner appeared before the young Varrena. The ghost informed her that just like her, Varrena was an Exalted, and began to teach her the ways of the Exalted and how to harness Elassah's Gift. As her father approached, and the other Exalted, the ghost calmly informed them of Varrena's true nature and future as an Exalted, and that it had been Varrena's touch that had allowed her to awaken and cross the boundary between the world of the living and the Palace of Elassah, where all Exalted were destined to ascend. Ever since that day, the ghost within that tree remained Varrena's mentor. Even as she learned from other Exalted, both living and deceased, that specific ghost remained her primary mentor and tutor.

Now, with Edem having joined the Republic and entered the Galactic stage, Varrena decided to leave her ancestral home to explore the galaxy, to see what other marvelous forms that Elassah's creation might have taken.
