DESCRIPTION
The VCX-820 escort freighter was a military grade freighter originally designed for the New Republic as a small warship.Designed several years before the demilitarization efforts, the VCX-820 was a heavy yet fast flying guns platform, and sported eight mandible mounted laser cannons that were capable of quickly overwhelming shields in a torrent of laser fire. Because it was designed to military specifications, it could easily guard convoys of otherwise defenseless bulk freighters and commerce craft. Despite this, it was reasonably priced on the open market.
Despite being classed as a light freighter, the VCX-820 was really more akin to a gunship. Designed to screen for larger and slow ships, its array of mandible-mounted guns swivel significantly and are capable of spraying a storm of bolts into incoming fighters or focusing on larger ships. The three turrets at the starboard, aft, and port sides are designed to aggressively discourage hostile fighter engage. The warhead launcher allows it to follow up on focused fire against larger ships to disable or destroy the target. It also possesses powerful military grade engines, thrusters, and shielding, which allows for surprisingly snappy maneuvering and quick response to hostiles while remaining in the fight for longer. When flown by a skilled crew, the VCX-820 can quickly prove its worth even when outnumbered.
However, despite the name, it barely counts as a freighter. Between the heavy duty power systems, weaponry, shielding, and engines, the VCX-820 has a mere one ton of cargo capacity, which is often used to store additional warheads as is. It is frequently used as either a patrol craft or an escort for freighter or transport convoys through Free World or Hutt space, with planets that can afford it finding pirates hesitate to engage the heavily armed ship for fear of losing more than they gain. Commonly used by groups of free traders, they are far from a rare sight outside of New Republic space.
While a single pilot can technically fly the ship on their own, they will struggle and won't be able to fire any weapons at the same time. If there are at least two pilots, each can slave a single weapon system to their console at a time at most. Ideally, one gunner would work each weapon system, including the warhead launcher. Some owners have used droids or slaved droid brains to the various weapons, though these are far less desirable or skilled than an organic user.
Though they can be purchased by sole owners, flying one by itself tends to attract attention due to the significant armament and lack of cargo.
LEGALITY
Restricted. Outside of New Republic space they are restricted in the same way as the usual starfighter or gunboat.Within the New Republic they tend to attract a good deal of attention from authorities if flown alone, but are not illegal with significant licensing.
INTENT
To introduce a Legends-only "freighter" to help the poor free traders combat the endless pirate groups on the forum, and as well as an armed ship for use by NPC organizations and planetary governments.
