Not sure if there's any good place to start, just pick up what interest you. My first new canon book was Dark Disciple 'cause I always liked Quinlan Vos.
Next for me is Aftermath, and I've heard good things about Lost Stars.

Echo the above, and if you like Comics the new "Star Wars" series (1-10 are printed, with 1-6 in a TPB so far) is good. The Star Wars: Shattered Empire series is a direct lead-up to Ep7 it appears, so that's another good series.

This link is a good one: http://starwars.wikia.com/wiki/Timeline_of_canon_comics

I've heard mixed reviews of the character-specific runs, like Star Wars: Darth Vader or Star Wars: Lando. But the "Star Wars 001" through 010 are good so far.

I've enjoyed all the character specific runs, but your milage may vary. Definitely give Tarkin a go.

Just to make things easier on my brain, I read the books in chronological order as best I could. As for comics: Kanan: The Last Padawan was a fun read. Leia was a touch slow for my taste but it was interesting to see the attempts to preserve Alderaan society. Darth Vader is fine, but the bizarro 3P0 and R2 steal the show half the time. Star Wars is generally decent, but it suffers from "Game of Thrones syndrome" as it tries to cover so many characters at once, you get a tiny taste of each one per issue. Lando was meh in my opinion. Shattered Empire has potential, but I only have the first issue currently.

Obviously, the original six films, which I assume everyone on this forum has seen. From there, I'd say it'd depend on your preference of media. If you're more visual, I'd definitely recommend The Clone Wars TV show, cause it's the only place I can really name 'essential canon, non-film characters' from. Characters like Rex, Ahsoka, and an expansion on many film background characters. All of which is canon. Rebels is good too, but a little more 'goofy'.

As for comics, the base Star Wars is a safe bet.

To be honest, I find the "new canon" a load of shit. I prefer the EU by far. It was more interesting, more mature and kept the fandom alive after the original trilogy. Not judging you if you like the new film-canon, but personally I wouldn't recommend it to anyone.

Thank you for your opinion. I wish to subscribe to your newsletter and see more worthless, unhelpful trash that has no bearing on the OP's question.

@Braden Drake your best bet is to start with Star Wars: Aftermath, one of a series of novels and comics that covers the interim time between ROTJ and TFA. It's fairly good from what I've heard, yet to read it myself.
