Why America is not the greatest country in the world anymore.

Even when we didn't fight the wars by ourselves we still ended up doing most of the work in most of them. (Or so my minor knowledge of History tells me.)

For the Gulf War, yes. I do not really consider Vietnam, 2nd Iraq War, and Afghanistan victories since they are not.

Okay, let me re-phrase that. Has America, after the Civil War, won a major war against a distinct threat by itself?

Vietnam definitely wasn't. There are tons of varied opinions on Iraq. Afghanistan is still going on, so I see what you mean.

Three words: World. War. Two.

The overall contribution of America, while not inconsiderate, pales in comparison to the European nations, especially the United Kingdom, whom fought against the Japanese Imperial Forces long before they attacked Pearl Harbour. Nor did the Americans' involvement in the war directly lead to victory. The Soviets did far more to ensure that than the Americans did.

I must say, Kiro, that's a refreshing point of view to hear.

Most of the time when this subject comes up, the general consensus among Internet trolls of the American variety is, they saved everybody else's ass. :CSly

I don't think it's ridiculous to say that the United States was needed to win World War II. However, that is still different than suggesting America came in on a white horse and single-handedly saved all the shitty Europeans from their Hitler future.

In my opinion: no. But military might/victory should not be the only thing considered in what makes a nation great. While there is no title of greatest nation, we cannot ignore that many people inside and outside consider the US to be one of the greatest nations in the world because of early history, great leaders, contributions, achievements, and the status as a superpower post-World War II and post-Cold War. Do I think the US is the greatest nation in the world? No. Am I an expert on the subject? No.

I agree with quite a bit of the video and what Bac said in general... on a slightly trivial note, what do people think about the comment along the lines of: "America has produced the best artists in the world"

I don't know if I heard that right, but if I did, it seems like a pretty daft opinion for the show to espouse, thoughts? (I am not saying America hasn't produced artists, just not the greatest artist in the world)

Very true. Unfortunately, those words aren't heeded enough as they should be.

We have to take into account that America never went through a Baroque or Renaissance period. So, whilst Europe had some of the greatest classical Artists (da Vinci, Rubens, Dürer, Michelangelo), America certainly had an out-pouring of Impressionists, Abstract, and 'new' breeds of artists. Georgia O'Keefe, Norman Rockwell, Andy Warhol, Jasper Johns etc. During Colonial times, there were certainly a lot of Classical Period oil paintings depicting scenes whilst America was still a baby and during the Civil War: Paintings such as the Death of General Wolfe (Benjamin West), Washington Crossing the Delaware (Emanuel Gottlieb Leutze), and the well-known George Washington Athenaeum (Gilbert Stuart).

Every Country has a long history with art, and whilst America may not have the pleasure of going through Classical periods in history, some of the world's best known artists who were or are American have painted, drawn, or sculpted great pieces. Every Country will argue that is has the best artists, but this is a rather silly thing to say.

Art is something inherent, art is something that we all can learn from. We are inspired by artists, living or dead, from all around the world.

Was it rather presumptuous to say America has the best artists? Yes. But who the **** cares? America does have great artists.

Canada seems pretty great.
Canada is pretty great. Whilst we do have our own problems (I mean, ****, we still practice apartheid, First Nations (especially Inuit) struggle to be heard as far as Parliament is concerned ((the cost of food and necessities of life in The North are OUTRAGEOUS.))), I absolutely love it here.

Having lived in Alaska for the past year, I realized that it is essentially quasi-Canada.

Sorry I should have expanded on my bracketed point! I totally agree with you, obviously America has a limited history, and I was not denying that it had produced skilled artists, I am a fan of some of Warhol's work and a lot of oil work in general. What I was challenging was the claim, as a LOT of countries could make that claim and in my own opinion quite a few of them (regarding the bigger picture) would go above America on a list of great artistic countries if one was to be established; saying that, America has produced a lot of great stuff more recently.

I know how big Russia is, I just don't get how a country's size has anything to do with how good of a nation it is. There's the Siberian Tundra, the Taiga, the Caucasus, small villages where poverty is often an issue, and then the very densely populated cities. So I'm not sure what kind of point you're trying to make here.

Also, Serbia is where it's at yo.
