As stated above I am currently wishing I could, and would have if I hadn't torn both my rotary cuffs during my junior year of high school -.-. I had just talked to a Navy recruiter the week before about requirements of becoming a SEAL after basic training when after a swim practice (I swam 2000 meters during practice and an additional 4000 after as self inprovement, then I would go work out during the weekends in the gym for wrestling conditioning) I managed to tear not ONE but BOTH of my rotary cuffs...this is on top of one of my legs being slightly shorter then the other (due to corrective surgery for Club Foot when I was an infant through my toddler years) I am now ineligible to join the military :( simply because I was young and dumb...I pushed myself too hard and never finished out my therapy for my shoulders :/

Out of curiosity, why do you want to join the military?

My entire family on both sides was in the military (save my mother and father) I felt like I belonged there, still do...especially since ALL of my friends joined up directly after high school as we all agreed to and I now cannot

Strange, I've always been of the opinion that you shouldn't feel you have to do something because your friends and family do it.

But hey, if that's what you really wanted, that's your perogative. I've always been sort of Anti-Military to a strange degree.

I blame Kurt Vonnegut.

Would you say you're more "anti people who run the military" rather than "anti-soldier"?

That's my stance on the whole thing, I respect someone who wishes to risk their life for most reasons. But I'll never respect some of the people at the top who couldn't give less of a damn about human life and safety.

Well, now, I suppose you now have a chance to break out into a new direction and find something that can differentiate yourself from your surroundings. Perhaps either college or another type of job?

Can't take sitting still so most college jobs are out of the picture...I am a hands on type of guy so sitting in a classroom drives me up the wall.

It's a bit more complicated than that. While I loathe old men in suits sending children they don't know off to die in a foreign land, I also loathe soldiers who fight for the wrong reasons.

That's at the center of it for me, lack of reason and morality surrounding military operations. Some would say ''Well that's War!'', but why is it War? Why are you fighting?? Do you know who your fighting? Do you know if it's right, or even if it's wrong? These are the things that concern me.

I'm not Anti Soldier or Anti Politician. I'm Anti Villainy.

Take up a trade, welding has pretty good pay, if you're looking for a little danger take up underwater welding, that's a pretty huge paycheck right there. Open up a garage, work on cars etc. if you like working with your hands the military isn't your only option.

I'm not Anti Soldier or Anti Politician. I'm Anti Villainy.

I'm stealing that line

Sorry to hear that man, a similar thing happened to a close friend on mine. He was too deaf to join (though someone early in the process told him he'd be fine.) And it kind of really threw him and his life plans when it just kind of disappeared. Hope you can find something else that interests you quickly.

Maybe an apprenticeship will work for you, like an electrician or welder.

Whilst I would never join the military, it is admirable if you are joining for the right reasons. I am very Anti-War and in a different sense, kind of Anti-Military. But to each their own, I suppose. I agree with Constantine, I blame Kurt Vonnegut.

Also, knowing from experience welding related activities can be extremely fun. I made several items at a summer camp a couple years ago whilst taking a welding course. Something like that, anyways. If I was a type of person that wanted to do hands on things, I would probably take up welding.

Anyways, good luck with whatever you end up doing James.

You can't even take on a more supportive role in the military (ie. maintenance)? That kind of sucks.

hey, I am in the same boat: except I have both of my rotary cuffs, i think (dont know what they are) and I feelt the same way. Why don't you volunteer at your local fire department, trust me, they'll work you to death lol. I love doing it and I hope to get a job (paid) one day. that's the only drawback is how hard it takes to get a job. I love the Navy too, I have wanted to sign up many times but for some reason I am staying at the fire department, I feel like part of a family. Plus, where else can you get good food and not pay for it? LOL hit me up on my MSN, I sent you something.

I dislike war, but I always wanted to stand by my brother's side and defend those who were not able to.
This year I was suppose to start Boot/Basic, but a semi-truck destroyed my chances of the Marines, or even playing lacrosse ever again. ;-;

It suuuuucks. I got your feels, bro.

Might be an opportunity; I got into West Point, but decided I was too much of an effete liberal to go. Mind you, before that I was totally planning on joining. Plenty of folks in the military, but life has a way of working out. I would definitely suggest an apprenticeship with some sort of trade if college is not appealing to you.

I've been in for 3 years, and I love it. 9/11 was a bit personal for me, and some people are predisposed to be military. My thing is don't give up. Talk to Air Force if necessary.
