Wolves, Cats and Crystals, Oh My

Lothal possesses kyber crystals and this is certainly an interest to the Empire. However the deposits our researches have discovered is deep in the wild regions of the planet. There is a reason there has not been many settlers here since it is untamed wilderness. Loth-wolves, sabercats and other beasts roam the wild. You will need to go there, possibly take some construction crew with you, and set up an outpost if possible though the fauna will not make it easy.

[/fancybox2]

Not every mission was alike. To a Coruscantian, raised at the very heart of the Republica, spending one's time in a planet so backwater it hadn't even been properly populated yet, in the middle of a jungle no less, wasn't the greatest experience of his life. Away from the comfort of the modern, sophisticated life he was all his life accustomed to, Callum now stood, in the warm, damp, insect-ridden wilderness, awaiting the entrance of the Crusader who'd issued the assignment.

The Acolyte didn't know much about this individual, and he had not found previous research to have been important. Never a fan of sycophants, the individual firmly believed that the best course of action here would be to do the job, to do it well, and return to the comforts of modern living as soon as humanly possible.

When he'd first reached the intended position, Callum had found the construction crew to have begun the preparations for their journey. His assignment was to, alongside the Crusader, defend these men and women and allow them to place the proverbial cornerstone that would kickstart the Empire's colonisation of such an awful environment. To the Coruscantian, this was a Noble effort. So, to while away the time, despite keeping his mind alert for possible threats, he awaited the arrival of his partner by making small talk with the workers.

It helped put the annoyance of flies out of his mind, at least. Why so many Sith were so fascinated by insects, he would never know.

❅ THEME ❅
The Crusader had orchestrated this whole campaign to take Lothal. It was a good planet, covered in potential bounty with all the farmland. But there were wilds here that had yet to be tamed. In their briefings Zan had been warned of the Loth-wolves. Large canine beasts that were as large as a landspeeder.

Rolling her neck and popping a few joints out of habit she watched the construction workers go about their business. One of her lightsaber handles twirled in her hand. The day was passing by and so far nothing had happened. Zan was more than just the designer of this whole thing, she was also someone who would actually get dirt under her finger nails. Simply having the good ideas did not mean she was absolved of the responsibilities of putting in the leg work.

Today Zanhad applied some more warpaint than she normally did. But it felt good to be out in the wilderness and enjoying the fresh air. Too much time had gone on with some responsabilities. Not that she would complain, it was just a nice change of pace to get out of the office. All the way out here she did not have to deal with all the hubbub of the whole Emperor in Paradise thing either.

As she sat on some crates watching the tree line she got a twinge in the back of her mind. A slight murmur came from her throat as she wondered what it could mean. Zan reached outward a bit. Her different colored eyes closed and she focused on the area around them. It took her a moment but she felt a significant presence approaching. Beasts were coming from the north.

Standing up and looking over to Callum she would inform him. "Several large creatures are approaching from the north. Be ready." She waved the construction workers down and had them get away from that area.

6 Loth-wolves (for now) and 10 saber cats later here
Going to see if she can tell which direction the wolves will come from by sensing them (success)

The Crusader seemed to be all business. He could work with that. Professionalism was a good thing, in such an environment. Allowed him to focus on work, which he disliked, but did so significantly less than the flies buzzing around. "Of course they are." - he muttered under his breath at the mention of impending combat. Things never really went his way. Why couldn't he just have one assignment where he'd just laze around? Was that really too much to ask for? Still. when Zan had mentioned foes, the Acolyte readied himself. He was Sith, after all. And that mattered.

In what he'd learned from the briefs, the beasts here were large, and they were fierce. So, rather than activate his lightsabre and risk being surrounded by a yet unknown number of foes, Callum drew his blaster and, the instant one of the creatures poked his head out, took a shot. It had flown true and hit its mark. But alas, perhaps the individual had struck too soon. The noise from the blaster and the death of their kin had drawn the attention of the wolves. Two now saw him as the prey they needed to strike at first. Soon enough, the Acolyte would be finding himself flanked, and close quarters might just be unavoidable.

Rolled to fire at one wolf. Minor success. It's dead but two others are now set on attacking Callum first.

The beasts were coming in at a distance. Rather than immediatly pull her melee weaponry and charge into the fray against outnumbering and more physically mighty animals she pulled her quickdraw blaster. The moment one of the wolves came barreling out of the treeline she fired off a shot. Missing, Zan fired again. Another miss. The wolves did not seem to be so dumb as other quadrupeds she had hunted. The one that the Deucalian had aimed at wove back and forth, making her miss the next two trigger depresses.

With it soon coming closer and closer Zan was beginning to think her aim was just terrible. This was why she normally cleaved into her enemy. It was easier for her to hit a target with her sith sword rather than frantically spray a bunch of energy out of a device. Well, it was not probably too close for her to actually take it down with the blaster. Reaching up, the Deucalian gripped her sith sword, waiting until the last moment to unsheath it against the charging foe.

While Callum had taken down a wolf right out of the gate Zan had failed at that. Though now he had two beasts set on him it looked like. The Crusader was not so differently off, though she had not even felled the one she had aimed at. These creatures were more cunning than originally thought.

These creatures were uncannily quick for their size. Callum had faced two wolves, which came at him from both flanks. It had felt like the first would be emerging first, and so the man's blaster was trailed on it, but as soon as his attention shifted away from the other, it lunged at him, and as if hit by a truck, the Acolyte was tossed to the ground like a ragdoll. Callum was bruised, he was beaten, and his blaster had been knocked clean off his hand, and was now who knew where in the jungle. How functional it remained was to be seen.

The wolf now moved to approach, slowly. The Coruscantian had wanted to cry out for help, but having had the wind knocked out of him, and maybe a few cracked ribs, the only sound he found himself capable of making was something to the effect of "Urghh." Not a gentleman's finest hour. But living through this was a tad bit more important than saving face.

While he tried to summon the strength to free raise himself back up to his feet, the man hoped his companion might be able to notice, and help.

Edit:
Kind of screwed the pooch with the rolls here. Apologies. Ended up keeping the worse roll of the two, making this a Major Fail, which sounds about right, lol. Apologies! Post was edited to reflect this shift.

The wolf roared and was getting close quickly. Its claw tipped paws and its snarling muzzle was all Zan could see. But she pulled her sith sword out, twirling and stepping to the side. The loth-wolf's head snapped for where her body had been a moment before. In one heavy swing the blade came down, cleaving into the neck of the large beast.

The animal was big and her sword did not cut completly through it. But it was enough to kill it. A heavy thud shook the ground as the loth-wolf's body kept skidding through the dirt. Its blood soaking into the ground.

One of the other two wolves had been hot on the leader's tail and tried attacking Zan as well. The deucalian rolled this time. Her blade catching the front leg of the wolf and causing it to cry out in pain. It would be injured and less mobile but still dangerous. The third wolf was less quick to attack her. Because of that she saw Callum out of the corner of her eye struggling with his own loth-wolf. She was too far away at the moment and dealing with her personal group of canine fauna.

Getting back to his feet was difficult, but he had endured far worse than this. Republica Sith training was all smiles in public, but behind closed doors, Acolytes were beaten until they understood and were labeled as capable of carrying themselves in ways deserving of their title.

Still, the wind had been knocked out of him, and he hadn't managed to recover just yet. He leapt up and secured stable footing when the wolf that downed him lunged at him once again. The Acolyte reached for his lightsabre, but was not quick enough. He had managed to deflect the wolf's lunge, but by the time the red blade even activated, the creature had passed him by, having pushed him yet again. The push had hurt, the blunt force having pressed on already cracked ribs, but the Acolyte could resist it, this time.

The second wolf then crept up from behind him and attempted to claw at him, but this time the man was prepared. He raised his lightsabre to block, and saw the creature actually stop short, and back off. These little bastards seemed cleverer than normal.

By this point, Callum was certain. This was going to be a long day.

Moving to distance herself from the injured loth-wolf Zan began scooting her way closer to her distressed comrade. He was having a tougher time than she was, that was for certain. Her aim had been poor so far and she did not want to take her eyes off of the beast that was still eyeing her with more patience than the previous two.

The Crusader needed to bait the beast into making the first move. So she decided to move fast towards Callum. That was enough. It barked and then bolted for her. It was not so different from its kin. The simplicity of its attack was easy enough. A shallow swipe across its face cause it to lose one of its eye and gouge a cut along its snout. Flinching in pain it moved its head out of harms way for a moment but then snapped back around to take a bite at her. But Zan was ready and plunged the tip of her sith sword into its skull. A quivering moment as the death spasms hit its body before it too slumped to the ground.

Turning her head Zan kept an eye on the injured loth-wolf. It was continuing to try and persue her but not making as much headway. Now it was more wary of her. Especially now that the Deucalian had slain two of the big creatures it was in less of a rush than it had been before. Zan growled at it, letting it know she was just as much of a fierce beast as it was.

His lightsabre was drawn, and he had finally been given a chance to breathe. The wolf that had attacked him most recently was within reach, but their tactics were simple, and Callum had figured them out. And besides, he had a score to settle with the other one, that had just about run him over.

He feigned an attack on the one closer to him, and sure enough its pack member lunged at him from behind once again. When the Acolyte heard the tell-tale growl, he pivoted on his left foot and his sabre swung. The mutt's head had been cut clean off. His shift in positioning had allowed him to dodge the lunge as well, causing the decapitated body to collapse onto the floor to his left, while the head laid at his feet.

Immediately, the Coruscantian moved to face the second wolf head-on, keeping tabs on its movement, stopping only briefly to investigate his surroundings. Two beasts lied dead at the Crusader's hands, while he had slain two more. Six had rushed them originally, leaving only two alive. Zandrali faced one she'd already injured, while Attar's canine friend slowly moved around him. Angry, but fearful, waiting for a decent chance to strike.

Despite his injuries, all in all, it seemed he'd managed to keep up with the Crusader so far. And the two were hopefully moments away from being able to weather this storm... or the initial onslaught, at least. While Callum eyed the wolf, an errant thought crossed his mind: Where the hell was his blaster?

Bit by bit she got closer to Callum. She did not like having to protect other people that were supposed to be protecting themselves. In fact he was supposed to be protecting the construction workers with her. But it seemed that he had been able to regain some of his composure and get back on his feet.

The wounded wolf hopped forwarded with its injured paw raised a little. It barked and snarled at her which she returned in kind. Zan dashed forward, her sith sword raised above her head. The Deucalian came down with one long strike. The loth-wolf was still surprisingly fast. Never underestimate a wounded animal. It still had claws and teeth that could rend.

The large animal dipped causing her to miss before doing a headbutt. It's large head as big as her entire torso. It threw her back a moment as she skidded with her heels in the dirt until she found purchase. Letting out a huff of aggression Zan tried again. This time avoiding the swipes of the injure loth-wolf, cutting its paw completely off and then stabbing through its neck. It let out a gurgling wimper before going still.

Today was not Callum's day. The wolf had feigned a few lunges, but Callum had seen an opportunity to strike. He twisted his torso to prepare for a big swing that would end the creature's life... Well, that was the intent, at least. Needless to say by this point, things did not go as expected.

Evidently he'd pushed his body too hard. His ribs, still particularly sore, had done a number on him. He felt a pang of pain, and the beast did not fail to capitalise. It slammed into Callum, who had been momentarily paralysed by pain and therefore could neither dodge nor block, and the man tripped over the decapitated torso, falling backwards on his head, the sabre deactivating as he did.

Once again, he was on the floor, and this time he had a rather nasty slash to his left arm, no doubt a byproduct of either a fang or a claw. He hadn't felt it at the time, and he believed he would be able to move this arm of his, but the longer this drew out, the worse it would get.

Either way, the man once more found himself on the ground, covered in dirt, with a rather large wolf preparing to pounce on his unprotected self... At least this time he hadn't lost his weapon. The fall did, however, ring his bell. The instant his eyes opened again, everything was spinning. If he could help it, he would not be returning to Lothal. Not ever.

She was beginning to pant. It took a lot of strength to cut through the thick necks of these animals. They were fast, strong and also intelligent. The Deucalian had fought bigger but these loth-wolves were a balance of all of those things. Thankfully her sith sword was big and sharp and she had the strength to deal some damage.

Turning to look at Callum he was back on the ground. Zan was beginning to understand that these beasts were more than he could have handled. If two acolytes had been put on this mission than chances were the construction crew would have been killed along with the acolytes. Zan would not have predicted that Lothal had such fearsome fauna.

Grunting Zanheaved her sword back behind her so it was in a trailing tail stance. Then, charging forward she closed the distance. With the wolf slowly advancing on Callum its neck was open. It did not even notice the large swing that came down, executing the loth-wolf in one mighty swing. The Crusader's attack had done more than just killed it like its fellow loth-wolves. The strike had cut the wolf head cleanly off.

That was the last loth-wolf. Blood dripped from her blade and wet the ground in front of Callum. Panting she turned her face towards the acolyte. "Get up Attar. Get yourself some healing." She turned and took a seat so that her back was leaning against the stomach of the loth-wolf's corpse. Her eyes drifted over the four wolves she had killed. They would all be added to her collection of trophies. "This is gonna make a lot of coats." A wry smile crossed her blood and dirt spattered face.

The individual sluggishly returned to his feet. A distinct ringing in his ears nagged his ears and everything felt topsy-turvy. Slowly, the man started to move, his steps uneven. Sometimes too wide, sometimes too narrow, but he trudged onwards all the same.

He hadn't properly managed to hear what the Crusader had told him, but he did offer a "Thank you.", which had been beyond reproach in politeness as it ever was, even with his complicated status. Everything was touch-and-go for a moment there, until his boot hit something. The man, still blinking far too much and trying to shake off the confusion, knelt down with difficulty and reached at what it was. He was surprised to find his blaster, which had been knocked off his hand previously.

Callum wasn't exactly in the best frame of mind to inspect something this intricate, but everything felt like it was in place, and that the blaster had remained in mint condition, unlike its haggard owner. Now feeling better, but still shaken, the Acolyte made his way over to some crates and sat down on top of them, as the builders hurriedly continued their job. They were moving things along well, it seemed. At least that was a plus. The quicker they got the job done, the faster he could leave this blasted piece of floating rock.

The Coruscantian sat there a moment, trying to find his bearings, and slowly stretching his bruised limbs, letting out soft, quiet grunts as he did so. The wolves really had done a number of him.

A few moments passed as Zan caught her breath and rested. Her two different colored irises gazed at each of the wolves. The one behind her had a rather nice white coat. The others were beautiful in their own right despite being dead. They would all make good pelts.

Zan knew that they would be able to make good clothing. The loth-wolves were so large that as she began to field dress the beast it crossed her mind that there was enough hide for her to make several pieces of clothing from just one wolf. The Deucalian's thoughts ventured towards Aadya. The woman felt that maybe a nice cloak or coat would go well. Zan was not great at a lot of the more domestic things in life that were common in the rest of galactic society but a gift like a nice cloak that was also practical would hopefully show the girl that there were some building feelings between the two of them.

As she used her nightsister magic to conjure a skinning blade. It came in handy to have that technique now. The formed weapon allowed for her to make the more delicate and precise cuts along the carcass. In a minute or so Zan had stripped the wolf of all its usable hide. A few directions towards the dozen troops that had arrived as backup had them move the other wolf corpses. The one she had worked on was the first to be moved. Its head taken towards her ship. The others would be dragged together and Zan would work on them in a few minutes, at least as long as nothing interrupted her.

Callum must've been in that state for a full minute, before he attained enough clarity to begin dressing and patching up his wounds. It wasn't the finest patch-work he'd ever done, but things looked clean and the world had finally decided to stop spinning.

The Acolyte was still sore, but his wounds had been cleaned, and he could finally move again. Having spent a good few moments then staring at Zan skinning the remainder of the wolves, his eyebrow shot up quizzically, but figured it wasn't worth asking. She was free to be into whatever she'd like. Not to mention, she had saved his life just now. That was worth quite a bit, in his book.

"Would you like some help?" - the Acolyte asked, approaching the Deucalian after having inspected the safety of the workers. As he prepared to provide any type of assistance that was asked of him, a growl sounded in the vicinity as a large cat leapt out from the brush and eviscerated some poor worker. The Acolyte's senses reeled, and it seemed the cat was not alone. The show was far from over, and this planet's dastardly creatures had gotten the drop on them.

As the beast dug into the mauled worker's corpse, everyone else scattered and found whatever hiding place they could, once again leaving the Sith to take care of this infestation.

"Today just keeps on getting better and better." - the Coruscantian muttered under his breath, as he steadied himself and prepared for round two, sincerely hoping that this time he'd do better than he did before.

"No I'm fine. Just make sure the other works are alright and setup a perimeter. If you see any more beasts don't shoot them unless they start moving towards you. We don't want to cause them to attack us if they are being docile." She relayed that to her troops. They would not want to start shooting at some herbivore that was just not used to human interaction. Sometimes big and strong herd animals were more damaging than the predators that hunted them.

As Zan turned to begin looking for a rag to wipe her bloody hands she heard a low growling sound. She stopped in her tracks. Her sword was still resting on the ground where she had left it. In her hand was the conjured blade. The Deucalian's grip tightened and her eyes searched for the source of the noise.

Several pairs of eyes glinted from the shadows of the treeline. Shapes of animals, smaller than the loth-wolves but still of significant size pawed their way closer. Before they emerged from the shadows a scream rang out from behind the Crusader. Turning to look Zan found one of the construction workers getting clawed and torn apart.

Drawing her quickdraw blaster once again the woman turned to find a target. There were plenty of them around. She could feel it in the air. Two Saber-cats came forth from the forest. Their snarling feline faces, purple-ish fur having blended in with the darkness under the canopy. Raising the blaster she fired off two trigger pulls but only one double shot found its mark. The other cat snarled and began bounding towards Zan.

Saber-cats were large and dangerous creatures. Particularly when they managed to successfully stalk prey. The worker stood no chance, and screamed, but was killed not long after, lacking the skills or tools to push the beast away from him.

The instant Callum saw it, and the cats circling them, waiting to pounce, he drew his blaster, that had been retrieved not long ago, aimed at one and pulled the trigger, uncertain of whether or not the thing would fire. It had seemed fine before, but there was only one way to find out. Thankfully, it did. The Acolyte had not aimed at the cat currently feasting on the human corpse. That one looked busy and therefore wasn't an immediate concern. If the man it was assaulting was still alive, then he wouldn't be momentarily. His body was proof that this assignment wasn't charity, and eliminating the more pressing threats needed to take precedence.

The Coruscantian fired off three shots, as he usually did. The first shot the cat he aimed at dodged, but he had heard a yelp of pain from a different creature. Evidently the blaster had hit a different cat in one of its hind legs, which seemed to restrict its mobility slightly, which was an added bonus. Still, the cat he'd been aiming at remained very much alive, and now rushed him. Which was why the man held his blaster a little more tightly, which brought about some pain and discomfort from the wounds which had yet to heal, and fired off the second and third shots.

The middle plasma discharge cut through the cat's flank, while the third punched a hole in its skull, rendering it dead on impact. The large beast, that had been aiming at him, had its jump cut short and fell onto the ground limply, with a wet thud.

Judging by their looks of interests, the sabercats seemed to be drawn by the Loth-wolf corpses. Presumably their smell. Perhaps they could be used as a distraction? Either way, there seemed to be more than just 6 this time around. And if history was to repeat itself, then Sith Acolyte Callum Veles Attar was about to be in big, big trouble.

Bending her knees Zan was ready for the cat as it got closer with every rapid heart. Beyond it were another two saber cats moving in quickly behind it. The Deucalian stepped into the pouncing attack of the closest feline with the conjured blade aimig towards its chest and then wrenching it up with brutish strength, slicing through ribs.

A savage roar came from not the wild animals but the Crusader as her warpainted eyes burned with rage. Bringing her blaster to bear she fired off two shots point blank into the body of the saber cat. It wimpered and fell to the ground. The two creatures beyond it were making their way closer but Zan saw them coming in slow motion.

Two more trigger pulls caused four bolts to leap from the blaster. Each aimed at one of the approaching sabercat. Her hands were still tainted with the blood of the loth-wolves and now her left hand dripped with the blood of a sabercat. <"None of of you $@#*ing *^&#~;* can take me on!> She shouted profaine challenges to the planet in Deucalic, daring it to keep throwing it wildlife at her. Callum was surprised by the guttural roar that the woman had released, as well as the bloodbath that then ensued. He figured it made some sense, considering the woman's tribal face markings and her large stature, but still. This was one lady he did not want to get in the wrong side of.

Still, even if it wasn't his style, it felt rather good to experience. Particularly for a Sith. Pleasure in violence and bloodshed drew in the dark-side, and the Acolyte's senses sharpened. He was too injured to try close-quarters unless he had to, so he'd be sticking to the blaster, for now. A series of short, controlled motions emerged out from the Coruscantian as he deftly fired off another three shots, with only a few fractions of a second in between.

The first shot landed in the skull of a sabercat preparing to pounce on the cage-like contraption the workers hid in. Evidently, it sought to pursue easier prey, which was probably wise, considering his pride-members were dropping like flies. Still, it ran out of luck. When plasma carved through fur, bone and brain matter, the running predator fell face-first into the ground and skid a few feet.

The Acolyte then swiveled on his foot slightly and found a second cat attempting to stalk him. It stood to his side, crouched low and moving silently, hidden by the chaos around them. The plasma missed his head, but dug into his neck-shoulder area, and presumably made its way in deep enough that it'd done considerable amount of organ damage. It too collapsed to the side, panting. It still drew breath, but would probably die out very soon.

In order to pull off the third shot, Callum needed to take a quick 180 degree turn, which did sting. He was in the zone, but that didn't mean that he was healed. As a result, his aim deviated ever so slightly, but he was lucky enough to hit a cat's front legs. By no means a lethal shot, but it seemed he might as well have cut it off. That paw was no longer moving, and a three-legged cat shouldn't prove much of a threat... Then again, with his luck, anything was possible.

While his display had been by no means as extravagant as the Crusader's, he did need to admit, it felt very nice to be on the dealing end of violence.

Two more of the feline beasts had circled Zan while she had taken out the previous saber cats. Her eyes flicked over towards Callum who was dealing with his own threats. It seemed like he was able to dispatch a decent amount so far and now there were only two left for each of them. The ones closest to the Acolyte looked a little more worn out and hurt than the two uninjured ones.

The cats must have thought her momentary attention towards her cohort to be the opportune moment to strike. The charging feline got two quick blaster bolts into its frame. The second one though was hot on the heels of its fellow saber cat. Zan would bring her knife up to meet the animal. The beast was heavier than it looked though. Its body slammed into the Crusader hitting her like it was hover-truck. The momentum of the feline was its own end though. The outstretched hand of the Deucalian that held the conjured knife drove in between the ribs of the predator. Teeth were just centimeters from her face, the breath of the swiftly dying animal warm on her already heated expression.
