"Something like that, yes," Nescius said, "the entire galaxy works like one giant organism, if every being was a cell, each planet a network of nerves, systems working as organs. They all come together chaotically to produce something that on the surface can often look harmonious. Don't be fooled by this veneer, chaos is the true nature of our lives, random chance affects everything, the force intervenes now and again as well, making everything even more chaotic. We must accept the chaos, make it work for our advantage, take solace and string harmonies of our own."

He paused, still walking on, his legs feeling a slight pull with each step. They had come quite a way, and their first lesson was almost completed. He spoke, "The final line, No life, only death."

There was bound to be one she could not really work out for herself, he thought to himself. Considering she had no prior knowledge she had done well to grasp the first four lines so accurately. He spoke, "The line reiterates that death is the only constant in life. The only inevitability. Suffering, instinct, passion, chaos, they all interlink, and are all parts of life that we must accept if we are to live, and death likewise. We cannot live restrained by fear of death, by fear of what happens after death, we must simply live. Accepting death, that one day you and everybody you hold dear, that everybody alive in the galaxy right now, will die, is the first step of becoming free to do anything, and that is the first step you must take in both understanding the code and becoming a follower of the Bogan."

"And in the finite throes of life, we must grasp all we can before our grip tumbles into the darkness beyond," he replied, "Dark Jedi don't get far by being cautious and worrying about a little thing like dying."

They continued to walk in silence for a little bit until a forest of pine-like trees began to line their route. The trees became thicker as they walked farther into what was recognisable as an entire forest into the darkness far beyond. Up ahead they seemed to come to a large clearing that opened out into a frozen freshwater tarn, about twenty metres across. There were some large rocks at their end of the shore, surrounded by smaller ones.

"I can imagine you're quite thirsty? The water in the tarn is quite alright to drink, but the ice layer on top is quite thick. If you manage to get through the ice I'll go and find us something to eat, okay?" without waiting for an answer he walked back into the forest and seemingly disappeared. Breaking the sheet ice would not be easy, if she tried to walk or stamp on it, it would give way and she would drown, and the rocks she was capable of lifting with her own strength were not heavy enough to break it.

"You'll be there forever doing that," Nescius voice seemed to echo in her head. If she looked, she would not see him anywhere. He was watching, though, concealed and a way away. Her choice was innovative, but she would freeze to death before seeing the fruits of her labours. Long before. Indeed, in setting her this task, Nescius had something else in mind.

"Sit" he instructed his voice again only ringing out in her mind, "and clear your mind. The large rocks are seem too heavy, but only for your physical strength." He was still reluctant to simply tell her what to do. He had given her a big clue, though, after all part of being a Dark Jedi was using the force.

Well, she had the right idea now. All Nescius had to do now was to push her just that tiny bit more until she could feel for herself. The girl had the potential to do it, she had the theoretical power, she just needed to access it. Not that her mind was like a floodgate holding back a tsunami, ready to burst at any moment and send torrents of power flowing through her. No, it would be slower than that, more controlled, like filling up a lake with a trickling stream. As the lake filled, the stream would grow into a great river until the lake became a sea and then a vast ocean, being fed from all over. Well, that was the eventual plan at any rate. All he had to do was to get that stream trickling.

"It is easy," he said, "empty your mind of distractions. Close your eyes and reach out to the rock. Don't wish it to move, will it to. Take it slowly, be patient and stay in control. Reach out."

((If the ellipses are meant to be "time passing", can you please not do that in future? Skipping over time is a little unnecessary tbh))

"Patience," came Nescius'. To some uneducated masses, it would seem as if Nescius was uttering the moniker of the Jedi Order. However patience itself was not a bad thing, it would encourage Xasha's perseverance. Hesitation was that Jedi trait to be so abhorred. He continued, "Slow down, stop rushing and take your time. You can do this."

Next time she tried, when she began to in her attempt to raise the rock, Nescius would, from his concealed observation, use his own power to levitate it, ever so slightly, from it's position. She would not, obviously, be aware he was doing this, but it was Nescius' plan that the confidence from her perceived success would enable her to grasp the rock more firmly than she had done. He did not expect the attempt to go perfectly of course, as he lessened his grip and she maintained the levitation, or tried to raise it further, she would need to concentrate harder than before. But she would be able to see that she could do this, and as soon as she realised that, her next attempt would be easier, and she would progress further.

As the stone hovered in the air, not moving up or down, Nescius smiled to himself. She was progressing well - it was also quite interesting to see how important confidence with the force was (and it also explained the intense arrogance of both Jedi and Dark Jedi masters; if they did not believe they were super powered demi-gods, they would not be masters in the first place.)

"Good," he said, echoing through her mind once more, "Concentrate hard and keep the rock in the air. When you feel ready, move it a few feet to the side, closer to the lake and set it down. Then continue on, you're doing well and you're nearly there."

He hoped when she did that, once she had caught her breath, she tried to move it again.

"One of those stones has disappeared." The quizzical statement was not, as his previous words had been, projected, echoey and fading, in the mind of his apprentice. He had appeared, quite suddenly, at the edge of the tree line around the tarn. He continued, a wry smily appearing on his face, "and you've managed to crack a hole," his brow furrowed in mock confusion, his voice still airily quizzical, "no way could you throw one of those rocks. I couldn't throw one of those rocks," he did not wait for an indignant answer, simply saying, "well done."

"I did promise food," he held up two brown spheres. Each slightly larger than a coconut, and with a hard brown shell that made them look like gigantic nuts, he tossed one of them to Xasha, "they're about the only edible thing that grows here. I have no idea what they're really called - I've never seen them in a supermarket or a restaurant offworld, but they're like shelled fruit. They don't taste of much, but when you're hungry that's the least of your worries."

Before he began to set about cracking the shell off he looked back to the tarn. The hole she had made, although satisfactory for the time being, would not quite be big enough for their purposes. Not that it meant failure for her at any stage, the fact she had been able to lift anything in the force, let alone such a heavy rock, was a great achievement. He flicked his wrist and a large rock flew up into the air, over ten metres. As it reached the apex of its flight, he raised his forearm slightly, as if catching it and then, as it fell downwards, he moved his own arm down swiftly, the rock increasing pace as if thrown down, hitting the tarn dead centre and shattering the entire surface sheet.

"Just in case it began to freeze over," he said, before walking to perch just by the edge of the tarn on a small boulder that was about the right size to sit on. Using another rock, he cracked the very tip of the fruit, indicating for Xasha to watch. Squeezing it slightly, with a crunching noise, the shell came off in two almost perfect halves, one with the meaty, white flesh of the fruit inside, the other almost empty. With the empty half, he leant down and filled it with the clean, cold tarn water, and drank from it, the cold water almost numbing his lips. He then began to ate.

"So," he said between mouthfuls, "you've had your first taste of the force, your first deliberate taste at any rate. How does it feel?"

"It feels..." he selected his words carefully, "when I open myself to it, when I let it's power flow through me, when I am filled with it's energy, when I'm submerged in it's ocean, controlling it's driving currents and tsunami waves, it feels like the air I breathe. It's as natural and comfortable as that. As it surges through me, it feels like it's part of my very being. But when it dissipates, and return to a normal state, the state I'm now, it seems like refreshing breeze about me, something helpful, something pleasant."

He stopped, finishing what was left of the white fruit and dropping that half of the shell, before leaning forwards again and filling the other half for another drink. He deliberately did not address the fact that saying it was like air, like a part of him made it seem necessary. He dreaded to think what would happen if it was stripped from his body. He was powerful, intelligent, strong-willed, physically strong, and he considered the most important lesson of the force to be that of not using it unless necessary - not to make it a crutch to lean on, to know your own limitations, but still the very shock of having such a thing torn from him, as many rumours and myths suggested was possible (although he hoped not by anyone living at the moment) was enough to kill him, the Bogan, the Grandmaster or anyone else for that matter. He banished the thought, it was hardly relevant then and there.

"You've entered into something new. Something that will change your life, the way you see things, the way you act. This thing, the force, it's a big deal. And with belief and potential, it's a means to overcome the impossible."

((I know somebody else said this first, but I couldn't resist...))

"It's an energy field," he replied, "created by all living things. It surrounds us, penetrates us, and binds the galaxy together," he paused a second, "it exists in everybody, but in most people it's simply an enhanced reflex, or a knack to reading people. In a few people, it manifests enough for them to be found by the Jedi, or Bogan and trained. And in a very small number of those, it's powerful enough to make the galaxy turn upside down and back again. The force is everything, and everything is the force."

As if moving completely off at a tangent, and they had not been having a deep discussion, he stood up, draining the water from the shell, dropping both halves and motioning for Xasha to stand, "We had best move on, we'll freeze if we stay here to long," wrapping his cloak on he began to pace away from the tarn and through the trees in the opposite direction from whence they had come, he inclined his head towards Xasha, "You've begun to feel the force for what it is now, no longer just as a tacit luck, but something to guide you, something the help, something to use. You'll see a great many wielders of this power, both Jedi and Bogan, use it mindlessly. You'll see them open doors with it, use it to boost their speed and their strength when walking, or climbing, or running when their are no stakes to their detriment. You'll see them show off, and use it not because they need to, but because they can. Never become one of these people. It has been the downfall of a great many people in the past, and a great many to come."
