Do you guys have suggestions for improving that? I ask because we have these threads a lot, where we beat up on a specific issue, but we always just circle around it and don't hone in on any sort of specific solution.
Any suggestions?
I have seen a bunch of systems here and there, namely on literary workshop sites and short story compilations, but the general theme seems to be that a user has to post at least two pieces of constructive criticism on another member's work before being allowed to post anything of their own. From what I've experienced, it is fairly effective at giving writers the necessary criticism they need to improve while honing the editing skills of those handing out the criticism. It might not be the most enforceable rule unless you make a "profile admin" of sorts, but I doubt anyone wants their job to solely consist of babysitting the profile boards to make sure people get what they want.
Just putting it in the rules should be enough to get most people to take it seriously. As long as members follow the rule, they will easily catch anyone who falls through the net of posting before offering critique, which saves the need for having a profile admin. It gets more difficult the further along you take it, but it seems to be an effective system.
Food for thought from the perspective of a deprived writer.
