The Sergeant was currently laying down in a field of grass. The grass was about at knee height and he, as usual, in his full armor sans helmet. His bandolier and belt were off and laying parallel to his right, the helmet was diagonal from his left shoulder. Previously, he had thought of standing up so his trainee could find him but if they were a Mandalorian then she should be able to find Shane no problem. For now, he was content with looking at the clouds and the deep blue sky. Sergeant Oderyn liked calm moments like these, not all the time but brief pauses fro reflection just came naturally to him. Though right now he had a blade of grass that he was nibbling on while thinking what the clouds overhead most resembled.

She carried her helmet, she didn't want to wear it if she didn't have to, it - and pretty much any combat, really - meant she would have to do up her hair in this complicated upside-down T that curved around her neck so her hair would fit in her helmet. Not that by now it took her a long time, on the contrary she was right quick at it, but that didn't mean she had to like doing it.

She was on her last year of quick medical training that wasn't learn-as-you-go, that was next year. As well, it would be some more lessons in Mando combat stuff, it usually was, but maybe he wouldn't start the first day.

When Mustafar freezes over.

She sighed as she walked in the general direction of where she was supposed to meet him. She figured that she'd find him by distinguishing the only blade of grass with two legs - fair enough, she thought. That wasn't working out as well as she thought, but she didn't mind a little search for him as much as she might, her white and aqua-colored armor - that of a medic - kept her from being scratched up by the grass, which was about halfway up her thigh. The joy of being short.

At least she was prepared - something her father and her first couple of years had drilled into her well, trio of vibroblades packed neatly side by side at her right hip, two medic packs for different occasions hooked to her belt, along with various other things she didn't bother to tally up at the moment. Where was that guy?

At least it wasn't too cool, though her armor had thermo thingamajiggers, she did like being comfortable, and comfortable was warm. She blew a bit of hair out of her eyes as she scanned the horizon.

As she was looking she nearly tripped over him, lying there still as if he were dead or something. She stared down at him for a moment before leaning down and tapping on his helmet. "Hellooo?"

He had heard footsteps amking there way through the grass, though the wind tried to have this gril take him by surprise. Opening one eye lazily to make sure it wasn't just some nosy Corporal, he tilted his head to the left to see the gril. The set fit. She was the right build, her armor was the same as a medics, and she was a she. Just like her file said.

Letting out a low sigh and a sharp whistle that issued from him blowing the piece of grass from his mouth, he picked up his helmet and belt. He raised the bandolier up over his shoulder and sized up the girl from his new perspective.

"Alright, as you know I am Sergeant Oderyn. Of course, I know who you are and your... "profession". Now I guess they have me training you for combat duties as I am no medic. Now, you don't need to worry about me giving you crap about 'Oh, you're no real soldier.' and that crap. You medics save our ass out there and I want you to be able to take care of yourself out there."

Shane looked to his pistol and secured it as he spoke. This was the only ranged weapon he kept on him for training. At least on the first day, he NEVER brought an assault rifle unless he had something specific in mind.

The whistle startled her a bit but she refrained form starting too much as she straightened.

He was straight to the point, but nice. She decided that, on first impressions, at least, that she liked him. "Thank you, sir." She said, almost timidly- earlier in life it would have been timid, but she was getting over that. She noticed him fiddling with a pistol and wondered if she should get hers out. It occurred to her then that she may have forgotten her pistol, so she nonchalantly and slowly moved her hand over to her hip where she normally hooked it, and was pleased to find its metallic surface beneath her fingertips.

A second later she recognized that he wasn't her medic trainer, so she put together that physical training would be in order. Thus, she would have to put her hair up. Nuts. She reached up and did a quick, loose braid that ran down the back of her head then split at a sharp angle to curve around her neck, like a headrest, almost. She knew that getting it cut would save her the trouble, but she happened to like it long. In the few seconds it took - she didn't even need a hair tie, she'd done it so many times - she asked, "What do we start with?"

Most recruits waited for him to announce that they were going into combat training. Or they already had their helmets on when they showed up. Though the ease with which she got ready did impress him, she was obviously versed in some aspects so he wasn't getting some Recruit who's ass he would have to wipe along the way.

"First of all, please don't call me Sir. I am a Sergeantm not an officer. Some of the other NCOs might not see that distinction but I don't feel I should be graced with that honorary title. Well, that aside, what areas of comabt do you excel in. My goal here is to get you better at what you are bad in and make you perfect at what you currently do. The main question though is this: Do you want me to go easy on you... or do you want me to treat you like I treat every other Mandalorian "soldier". Either way you have won my respect so you can choose on your own preference without my judgement."

"Excel in... um, I'm good with melee stuff, mostly vibroblades. I'm bad with ranged things - I'm a terrible aim." She said, lifting one finger to her lip, tapping it as she thought. "Um, I can't say for you to treat me normal - I'm a medic, not an advance guard. But I don't want you to go too soft on me either. You've had more experience, why don't you pick... ah..." She said, quietly as she thought a moment. "Since I can't call you 'sir,' then what do you want me to call you?"

Despite her determination to be a serious about this as possible, when he mentioned that he respected her, she had to fight off looking too pleased and happy, though the twinkle in her eyes gave it away any way. "Thank you, sir." She said, quietly, letting the title slip.

Shane fealt the urge to smile at the Recruit, trying desperately to hide it he donned his helmet and let it slip.

"Well, you can just call me Sergeant or Sergeant Oderyn. Who knows, I may just like you enough to allow you to call me by my first name. As for how I treat you I'll try and use my own judgement. If you feel like it is going over your head, just tell me. Now, after that sentence I would test my recruit's reactions by trying to attack him with my knife. For you however I'll let you make the first move."

Shane pulled his knife from the bandolier and flipped it to his right hand. Making sure that he was holding it along his forearm and he had his thumb on the bottom of the grip. He pointed the side of his blade towards her. She wouldn't be able to see here reflection in the blade however, nor would it shine light into her eyes. For Shane's knife was custom tailored and made of a black metal that reduced shine for those stealthy operations.

"Don't be afraid to draw your sword or use everything you got. The purpose of this exercise is for me gauge your current combat abilities."

"Sergeant Oderyn is too long, so I'll just call you sergeant. If we get back to base, though, the title will probably turn the heads of half the crew milling about." He said, lightly. She continued to listen as she recognized she would need to don her helmet and did so. She was now just one T-vizor against so many again. Almost made her feel insignificant, but she ignored it. She nodded her thanks as she was given permission to strike, but she just stood there for a second.

"W-wait a second..." She said, thoughtfully, voice coming out metallic-y through her helmet, "so I attack you first?" She asked, gesturing slightly of confusion. "But you usually let others attack you? That sounds like-" At that she suddenly broke off her distraction and swung her upraised lower arm, covered by a long band of hard armor, hard at the side of his helmet in hopes of hitting it and perhaps getting him off-focus for a second. With her other hand she reached for her short vibrosword - a regular-sized one was a bit cumbersome for her - and swung at his side.

Shane ducked and side stepped. His movement was almost like a spin move used in sporting activities but almost none of those athletic events had a knife wielder.

"Of course I have them attack me. You can't always take someone's word as truth. Some may see their abilities are at a masterful level. I am here to be the judge of that."

She was smart to use a two sided attack at different levels. Now clear of any danger from her he moved in for his strike. He switched his knife to his left hand so he could defend from another blow from her right. He intended to put his fist into her gut.

How he'd managed to dodge her attack despite her distraction she had no idea. When he spoke, in between her movements she replied, "My questions were nothing but air to distract you while I got ready to hit your helmet. I can't win with strength or stamina, so my dad told me to use smarts."

As she waited for his next move, assessing up his movements, she managed to block a punch at her abdomen but quickly using a kind of rising block with her upper arm so that his punch hit the armor around her ribcage and not her stomach. As such it barely knocked the wind out of her, which she was grateful of. In the next moment she swung her vibroblade towards his shoulder in slightly downward stroke as she tried to figure out her next move.

Shane raised his knife to block the blade. The girl was good. He had never had a Recruit yet that seemed to actively analyse the "playing field". Back in his mercenary days Shane had been used to people pulling blasters in the middle of conversations so it was of no surprise to him. For the blade coming at him he saw here arm muscles move. Dedicating years to fighting and physical pursuits did give you a bit of knowledge on human anatomy... and how to best destroy it.

"Interesting."

With her blade stopped he was open for another attack. The girl was smart enough to keep her other hand open while using the sword. Shane knelt down and angled himself so his right shoulder was now facing her. He then drove upwards hoping to use his body weight and force exerted to ram her. No fist could stop that.

She bit back a curse s she saw Sgt. Oderyn use his superior strength to ram her in the chest. There wasn't much she could do to dodge it, but his being there meant that it would take a few milliseconds to orient himself. Fractions of seconds were precious. As she saw him ram at her then hit her, she retaliated by slashing at the onrushing body with her vibrosword, making the slash at the side opposite the one he was facing. More of a chance of a hit that way. As she went down, she made use of the momentum to kick up her foot towards the man's chin/neck, whichever one it got closest to. She wasn't aiming to be particularly accurate.

However, she knew that once she landed she was terribly vulnerable - low ground was very, very bad. Unfortunately, the blow was enough to daze her for a half a second before she regained her bearings and made a move to roll onto her stomach to position herself to better push herself up.

Shane was able to stop the blade by catching her slender wrist. He couldn't however have blocked the kick and he took the blow into the chin. It smashed his teeth together, he was just glad his tonuge hadn't been there. Dazed for a moment he began to react. He began to try and twist her arm, she would let go of her sword. While doing this he dove to get on top of her. Trying to use his lower legs to pin her thighs and dropping his knife he attempted to grab her other wrist.

She mentally kicked herself as she felt his hand close about her wrist. She should have known better than that. And when his hands weren't busy doing something else, too. She must be rusty. Her head snapped back when she hit the ground, fortunately kept from any harm by her helmet.

She bit her lip to help keep her mind off of his twisting her arm, focusing on grasping another knife with her free hand. At the same time, she had to keep him from grabbing it, as he was pinning her legs. If he ever got hold of that hand it was over. She finally realized that unhooking another knife from her belt would take too much time, so she would have to settle with the smaller, broader knuckle-plate vibroblade. She quickly scraped the side of her wrist against the side of her leg before moving to jam it into a kink in the armor over his abdomen. At the least it might weaken his hold on her, of nothing else.

Dumb! Shane hadn't fully realized just how many weapons this girl had. For a medic she seemed well armed. Shane quickly moved backwards off of her. Finding himself on his back now hew rolled to his right and retrieved his dropped knife and resumed his defensive stance.

"Well, I'll let you get back up. Usually I let soldiers take time to catch their breath when I spar for the first time with them. Sorry, I got a little into this fight."

As she picked herself up, she allowed herself a small grin beneath her helmet. "I carry several knives. They're good for on-field medical work when I don't have access to a lot of things." She said, also taking a defensive stance. "It's all right about that. I got a little into it, too. I think I was trying to kill you." She said, muffled chuckle sounding beneath her last word.

She looked up at him, a direction she usually had to face around other people, and looked straight into his T-visor. They were fairly close, considering, both contemplating and waiting for the first move. As she looked and thought, she caught sight of something. Fire. There was... something in that visor, so clean and shiny that it reflected everything in front of it in a dark monotone. Her breathing sped. There was something in that visor... there was something in that visor!

Her heart began to pound against her chest as she finally saw it staring back at her, right back into her eyes, looking straight into her soul with a burning fire.

Terror.

There is a star I've named for you,
Though others mightn't know it's name,
Its name will always be in you.
Your heart makes in shine
Gives light from your heart to mine...
My little star...
Here you are.

She began to shiver as that haunting music floated through her mind. My little star... She screamed as the horrible thing grabbed her throat, a cold hand that was crushing it. Her scream grew hysterical as she suddenly swung towards that visor... she had to kill that visor. She stared at it, shivering as she pulled her helmet off, it was too hot. It dropped to the ground as her knees buckled beneath her.

She sat kneeling on the ground, breathing hard, eyes shut in a tortured state of mind. One hand went to her head as the fear once more peaked, then abased.

The screams had thrown him off he was about to lower his weapon when she tried to slug him. Skipping back he was ready to strike when she pulled off her helmet and went to her knees.

"Great."

Shane let out a sigh and dropped the knife. He pulled off his helmet and set it aside. He had never been much of a comforter. He'd never had too. All of his relatives had been strong willed and when they wept they did it in private. He never had to comfort any lovers as his current position in the Mandalorians kept him busy and in the field, and there weren't too many females out there. He slowly knealt beside her and tried to put a comforting arm around her, resting his hand on his shoulder. He wasn't much for words so he'd just wait for her to calm down.

She shuddered a bit, still dazed and frightened from her experience, as she felt her commander's arm reach around her shoulders to comfort her. She wasn't used to being touched by a male, it was different. Fortunately, she was sure she didn't have to worry - he was at least ten years her senior. She remained kneeling, trying to calm herself.

"I'm sorry..." She said between breaths, "just another one of my attacks... it happens sometimes. Not often. It's been happening more and more in recent years though..." She revealed, pulling her mind off of the sight. "Maybe it's because I'm almost an adult or something... I'm better now." She said, taking one breath before getting up again. "Thank you... ah, did you have many attacks when you were about my age?" She asked before requesting that they continue with the training.

He hadread her psych evaluation and was prepared. But yet blind sided. Some of his friends had joked with him when he took on this recruit. Most of them had requested her tranfered when they read her report.

"Yeah, it's normal. Should pass, I found it was always best to not think about them as much."

Shane walked back towards his helmet and retrieved it. Yet, he hesitated. He was considering if he should give her the day off. If he could maybe tell her that if it was a pretty severe attack that she could take the day off.

"Are you sure you wish to continue for the day. I wouls hate for you to not be fighting at your full potential."

"Yes, it helps not to think about them." She said, brushing a stray lock of hair from her eyes. She was curious as to why he hesitated at grabbing his helmet before turning to her. She looked at him oddly at his question. "Oh, no, I'm fine. This was a pretty mild one. Besides, fighting will take my mind off it, and it always helps me think." She said, looking him up and down.

"Is there something wrong?"
