At first Malon's bubble held, showing only ripples as the barrage of pure dark side energy assaulted it. However, Malon soon found that holding back the lightning attack was more difficult than it seemed. He could not reinforce the bubble strong enough in all the places it was being effected. To make matters worse, Jev was now moving closer, intensifying the dark power further. Malon felt his defenses failing and brandished his lightsaber, its orange blade hissing into existence.
Finally, the barrier failed and the lightning tore past what was left of it, heading directly for Malon. Swiveling his blade into a defensive posture, Malon caught the lightning on the orange plasma, reflecting some of it back at his master. While he did so, however, some of the lightning arced off and struck his face, causing his eyes to change color as it was effected by the dark side energy.
Empowering his limbs with the dark side, Malon pushed himself forward, causing the lightning to continue to reflect back at Jev. It wasn't enough. The lightning was sapping his strength from him. At last his defense failed and the lightning hit him full force, throwing him against the back wall of the room. At first, Malon found himself flickering in and out of consciousness. Somehow, he'd managed to hold on to his lightsaber throughout the assault. Switching it off and replacing it on his belt, he made himself get to his feet, though he was barely able to stand without leaning on the nearby wall.
