It's completely impropable that aliens do not exist. Look up at the stars and realize that each one could have planets orbiting them in a greater or lesser extent than our own solar system. There could be upwards of billions of planets and the odds that there isn't sentient life is very low.

Is this within the Galactic Habitable Zone? If so we certainly have a contender. And agreed with Dex. I believe the calculation is that approximately 2,000,000,000 planets are theorized to be able to support life in our galaxy.

WE don't have any contender. It would at best take 5,000 years to reach that star system, assuming it's there 5,000 years from now, as if it blows up now, we will only know then. Humans need to accept the fact space travel will be impossible, as we cannot travel faster than light, and its hard enough to travel as fast as light as is.

it's a galaxy far far away! YES! I KNEW IT WAS TRUE, I KNEW IT. Everyone, we must gather our lightsabers and wait for the jedi to arrive.

Well before we can even imagine travel to a system with an earth like planet we need an efficient way to see planets approximately earth size.

Space can do whatever the hell it wants, so FTL is possible.

Space can do whatever the hell it wants, .

Exactly, but we can't. So with the knowledge we have today, it looks like faster than light travel is impossible. From what knowledge we have, the closer you get to the speed of light, the harder it is to continue accelerating. I dont see Sci Fi movies coming through in that respect. There are just somthings you can't do.

Everything has a mass.

Light does not.

Conclusion, you can't travel at the speed of light.

When Wing invents a perpetual motion device with his fellow scientology super-defenders and we all have parties with aliens on the sun, I will remember this day.

I think aliens would be cool, but at this point I don't really care about FTL travel.

I keep reading it as 'For the Loss Travel.'

Time for me to step away from CoD for a bit, methinks.

If you were to get something near the speed of light, the observer in the spaceship could arrive there in a week, on his/her time, the only problem is that the rest of us would have to continue waiting in our time.

I was thinking of it as For the loss travel too, though , I do not think that we will ever be able to travel fast enough for this to matter.

Yes, traveling at the speed of light is not possible. Why do I know this? Because common beliefs are always proven right! I mean, we all know that the Earth is flat, we all know that we can't travel at the speed of sound and we all know that we can't level an entire city with a single bomb!

Clearly that's sarcasm. I'm not saying that traveling at the speed of light is possible. What I am saying is that we shouldn't discount it as impossible.

Nothing is impossible...fifty years ago 1958 the computer was a big box. Many said they would never see a computer in home, but today we have laptops, desktops, ipod, flash drives, terabyte hard drives, cellphones, etc. I know I most likely won't see it during my lifetime.

Yeah but to break the laws of physics is another thing entirely.
