I loved the U-Wing design, personally. It's basically a redesigned Y-Wing with the hand-me-down X-Wing propulsion system.

Looked more like a snowspeeder in space to be honest, with really thin, wacky looking wing things. (Serving seemingly no purpose)

In any case it's what I would have called a kitbash in Star Trek, and not a particularly impressive one either.

( Also important to note the X-Wing and Y-Wing were built by completely different companies at different times and for different roles. Throwing them together to make something is a little more than lazy on the part of whoever came up with it making the movie. )

The U Wing was a troop transport. The wings would have been to assist with atmospheric flight.

@Mazianni

I'm not entirely sure how the X-Wing and Y-Wing being made by two different companies is detracting from the U-Wing. We know nothing about how the design came together in-universe: for all we know, the lead engineer from the Y-Wing project during the Clone Wars could have moved to Incom, the company that designed the U-Wing.

The Empire Strikes Back = A New Hope > Rogue One > Return of the Jedi > Revenge of the Sith > The Phantom Menace > The Force Awakens > Attack of the Clones

My main gripe was how ineffective the Empire was. Somehow, Stormtroopers felt even more pathetic in this than they did in the original trilogy. Even in the end, it's only the Rebel Red Shirts who actually die to blaster fire. Again. I expected that with this being focused much more on the 'grunts' of the Alliance and with a darker tone that they'd come across as at least slightly more effective.

Kennec was also a huge disappointment for me. He had an awesome aesthetic, a menacing presence from the trailers and screenshots... but then he spends the whole thing getting into a huff and stamping his feet and generally being caught between Vader and Tarkin. As much as I loved, loved, loved seeing Tarkin again (The CGI was slightly uncanny valley but it could've been much worse) it felt like they didn't want to double down on sinister Imperial officers and so Kennec got the shove in the script. He probably would've worked better if they'd kept Tarkin to only a Leia-esq cameo, but hey.

I loved that the Alliance were shown with much blurrier shades of grey. As awful as it sounds I almost cheered when the informant was shot in the back because that was the kind of thing I hoped to see from a darker film. They're very much still 'the good guys', but there's enough grime rubbed in to not make them seem so comically do-gooder. The talk of extremist factions (well, the one) also helped in that regard. It made sense that not every Rebel is necessarily the heroic, lovable, affable rogues we almost exclusively see.

The ending five minutes were spectacular. From the Death Star engulfing the protagonists, to Vader carving through the Rebel crew, to the final seconds. Dark, violent, tragic and emotional. Excellent.

I recommend you read Catalyst if you haven't yet. On the surface to a casual movie goer, Krennic's character is very thin and does spend most of his time doing as you described. But that was actually part of his lot in the film based on his characterization in Catalyst. After reading Catalyst, you discover that there is a very tense relationship (to the point of rivalry) between Krennic and Tarkin, so in that context it wasn't wholly unexpected (for me at least) to see him in a more marginalized role next to Tarkin.

I haven't seen it yet unfortunately (and not until after christmas), but I'm already working with some of the material from it, especially regarding the Guardians of the Whills and Jedha. Some of the story stubs I accidentally'd with the kyber staff write-up lend themselves to something bigger, so I might do some sort of lore fanpiece or something.

Is the lightbow just like...if a bowcaster is a crossbow, then a lightbow is an arbalest? Or is there more to it than that?

Long forward-sweeping wings like that would be way more trouble then they'd be worth unless you're flying at some high altitude (and we see the ship managing just fine in atmosphere without them extended). I would have rather they used something like the MAAT instead.

Or anything else, really.

Painfully off-topic here, but I really hope the old canon that the T-65 X-Wing prototypes and schematics were smuggled over to the Alliance by Incom Corporation still stands.

Not only because it was such long-standing canon but because it made a really snazzy Empire At War mission.

The U wing is far faster than the MAAT in both space, atmosphere and in FTL since you know it can go FTL. I personally liked the U wing it prefect sized ship for the Alliance and with all the abilities one needs for a Alliance transport.

The Tie striker are the issue for me since Tie fighters are able to fight in atmosphere.

Able to fight in atmosphere yes, but TIE fighters perform horribly in atmo, due to their shape. It makes perfect sense for them to have a fighter designed more for atmospheric combat.

I liked it.
Good movie.
Explosions.
Darth Vader.
Funny Squid Thing.

Also, Rings of KathrIdiPpala, the trading outpost, I want to do threads on it. Live there, sell @Green Ranger into slavery there.

All in all, good film.

Well that's just rude.

From my point of view the Jedi are evil.

I also liked Vaders bit in the movie, he was in it for a decent enough period without making the entire film about him.

One small gripe: Director Krennick has a serious saliva issue.

I'll start using it in the new year, so as to give people time to see the film :)

So, so, sooooo much better than TFA, I was excited for this in a way that I never was for TFA, and wow I wasn't disappointed lol.

The main complaints I had with the movie were as follows:

1: Saw, especially as played by Forest Whittaker, was way too cool to have died so early. I'm 10/10 planning to find his clone wars episodes now cause I haven't seen them.

2: I feel like some people died to early to leave the emotional impact that the movie tried to give them, mostly Jyn's dad but also Saw.

3: I feel like it would have been cool if the Imperial detector hadn't just shrugged off the tentacle monster madness after like 5 minutes, that would've been a cool bit of characterization imo.

Also I feel like Chirrut being bulletproof was a kind of message explaining why stormtroopers can't hit important (usually force sensitive [Luke]) characters for shit. I'm also predicting that that scene is now going to be the new cover page of the stormtrooper marksman Academy and I want a gif of it lol.
