Name: The Ao. (Females of this race are known as Aurana)
  • Biology: The physical appearance of an Ao or Aurana cannot be described with mere words, as it does them disservice. Those who have beheld them simply described them as Celestial Dragons. Similar to Dragons in all respect, they can change form between their large celestial body and their more humanoid counterpart. In theory, they can take on any form they wish, but do not. Though variable in appearance, Ao generally had serpentine bodies, diaphanous wings, and a pair of legs on each of many body segments. The legs on their frontmost segment were used as arms with fully articulated hands. Their average length was ten meters, but some were rumored to be one hundred meters or more. Ao were covered in scales which ranged from various shades of colors. In humanoid form, they resemble humanoid dragons. They’re still covered in scaly hide, but they don’t have tails. They are tall and strongly built, often standing close to 6 feet in height and weighing 150 pounds or more -- females being of basically the same height and weight as males. Their hands and feet are strong, talon like claws with four fingers and a thumb on each hand. A Ao's head can feature a blunt snout, a strong brow, and distinctive frills at the cheek and ear. Behind the brow, a crest of hornlike scales of various lengths resembles thick, ropy hair. Their eyes are shades of red or gold. Most Ao in humanoid form have very fine scales over most of their body, giving their skin a leathery texture, with regions of larger scales on the forearms, lower legs and feet, shoulders, and thighs.

  • Breeding: It is known that a mating challenge is delivered between opposing Ao for an Aurana. The same can be done between Aurana under certain circumstances. Once mated, they are laid born in a hard-crusted egg, commonly in space. Young Ao grow faster than any other children do. They learn to control their bodies hours after hatching, reach the size and development of a 10-year-old human child by the age of 3 and reach adulthood by 15. They live an exorbitant amount of time, centuries.
  • Strengths: An ancient wisdom and akin abilities to their physical forms. Stronger, faster, and wiser than any man. They do not partake in combat often, but when needed can unleash the Force in a raw manner, for they are able to see a spectrum that most species cannot perceive. They can "see" the force in it's raw form, although very few have ever been able to manipulate it as a Jedi or Sith does, they can manage to unleash it in it's most basic forms of telekinesis. They posses scales that naturally protect them from attacks, although the skin underneath is especially vulnerable. They can survive in vacuum.
  • Weaknesses: An attack from the Force can be lethal in any form to an Ao or Aurana that does not know how to properly defend itself. Otherwise, regular weapons applied to weaknesses between scales can also prove deadly.
  • Diet: They can sustain themselves by eating the remnants of celestial bodies.
  • Behavior/Temperament: They are old, older than most stars. It is not uncommon for an Ao/Aurana to be incredibly vain, as their appearance is of utmost importance.
  • Communication: They know almost every spoken language in the Galaxy, and can commmunicate using any of them.
  • Culture: They certainly know of the Force's existence. It is not common for many Ao or Aurana to be in a group. There was a time, before global expansion, where "Star-Forging" took place. The act of maintaining a solar body, and as such protecting the worlds surrounding it. Groups of their kind would inhabit a galaxy, harvesting it's sun's natural radiation as food. Since global expansion, however, they have delved into the unknown regions, or have been hunted down and killed.
  • History: An Ao or Aurana is an exotic creature, and as such, they seldom encountered any equals. As more forms of life emerged to fill the universe, a multitude of primitive eyes gazed up and beheld their work with wonder and breathless pondering. Flattered by this audience of countless worlds, they became fascinated by their fledgling civilizations, who crafted amusingly self-centered philosophies on the nature of their stars. Some revered them, others cowered in fear of them, but the result was the same: They worked in the Stars, as it was their home. Hundreds of Thousands of years ago, when the Galaxy began utilizing space travel, the Ao where startled but amused by the advancement. They learned of the denizens of the Galaxy. But in the end, they where hunted down and killed for sport, with only few surviving. The tales of a Star-Faring Dragon became Myth as the secluded themselves in faroff regions of space. They have still observed the stars they maintained from so long, from afar. Ever waiting for a time where they might return.
  • Planet: It is unknown as to where this species originates, as they are likely born of the vastness of space itself.
  • Technology: They will only use technology when taking on a humanoid appearance, using regular technology. They usually do not, however.
  • Intent: A while ago, I joined an Elder Scrolls RP site with the intent on creating a Dragon character. Unlike any other RP Character before (And this is ironically a fact), the Dragon could traverse the world and aide in any way it deemed necessary, being often utilized as a preator or arbiter of peace, a voice of wisdom amiss chaos and uncertainty. A part of me wishes to bring a character like that here, and so I created the Ao with the intent of providing a race whose very nature prevents it from being directly entangled in the agendas of the main factions, instead opting to help the Galaxy evolve as a whole. I am aware that this race is far-fetched, I also know that many will question exactly how you go about RPing as a Star Forging Space Dragon, and I will gladly answer your questions below.

Why can't this be done through any other character? Why does it necessarily have to be a shape shifting dragon?

@GABA I likely can't. As far as I know so far, there is no creature in the Star Wars universe that can live in the vacuum of space and take on a humanoid form at will. With a species that has only begun to return to the Galaxy after centuries of living elsewhere, returning to the former Suns they maintained. It makes for a unique experience for any RPer. Sure, a member of a species could leave on a journey and then return to the Galaxy, but the Ao race didn't just leave. They where forced out, made into glorified sport, after care taking for these fledgling species. The Ao that do return will be either distraught and seek to rekindle their stars, or move on and help the universe as a whole. And, unlike most races in Star Wars, (as aforementioned) they have lived longer than any one race. The runner-up species would be Yoda's, and as of now they can only live up until 900 years. This makes the word of an Ao extremely credible, and their very nature shrouded in mystery. An RPer could give an Ao ANY background they choose and it would be acceptable by galactic standard because they are not constrained by Galactic Norms. Enslaved by a species of sentient mattresses? Sure, an Ao could have been in that situation. And it would be a learning experience for the Ao. They do not know much about the species of the Galaxy, only its state. Another possibility to explore.

I don't really thing that answers @GABA 's question. Why can't a character just help the galaxy as a whole, as opposed to creating an entire species for that purpose?

@Outlander @GABA I realize I've only been stating what I am going to do if the species is created. I intend to utlilize this race to allow other users to explore and create ancient culture, as well as far off worlds that are uncharted. It is also to allow users to craft a completely unique background concerning this species. There was a dragon-like species in Star Wars once, but it is now considered Legends, furthermore it separated itself from a traditional "Dragon" in more ways than one. This will also give users the ability to play as a Dragon, which in of itself is pretty cool and an interesting twist in a futuristic universe. I will also hopefully feature the race and those who use it in a story arc at some point. Because, let's face it. "Here be space dragons" has a nice ring to it.

A clawdite taking the form of a Givin could do that. A Neti does both survive in space and shapeshift into a humanoid form, could probably mold their body to look like a dragon too. There's also the Duinuogwuin that are a dragon like species but haven't undergone the review process yet(likely because the admins haven't seen anyone play them without being ridiculous yet, though they're not a necessarily OP species).

@Black Noise The Duinuogwuin are Legends Continuity, and even so they are confined to their own space sector due to the Duinuogwuin Contestion, in which they attacked the Republic and where drive out. The Givin can only support vacuum for a short amount of time. Clawdites are merely mirages, and cannot hold the skill that an Ao possesses unless they have an unlikely lifespan of a few millennia or more. The Neti is a sentient tree race that can shapeshift, but like the Clawdite they are mere mirages. The Neti can also not survive in vacuum, and none of these three races can survive direct radiation required for the maintenance and harvesting of stars (important for a story arc I hope to make with those who choose to play as an Ao or Aurana, respectively.)

But you see, all the species I have listed are star wars species. They have strong abilities, but they have limitations as well that makes them viable races for a character. What I see you've written isn't bad, but it's not very star warsy. More high fantasy Warhammer 40k, Mass Effect, Halo ect. Which all have ancient highly powerful races governing bodies of stars and ect. And the base idea is from skyrim/elder scrolls, which is also not very star warsy.

The fanon species board exists for new, fun, creative ideas like this to get approved for RP. Props to you man for creating something, it's not bad! But it doesn't have the feel or balance of star wars. Star wars is high Sci fi low fantasy, yes there's the force but going by the original trilogy and TFA the Force isn't portrayed in a manner that would classify it as high fantasy like magicka or soul powah.

But yeah, I don't think this'll get approved. Tl;Dr fits better in mass effect than star wars.

Let me ask this: Why does it need to be able to breathe in space? How would not having this ability affect your character's culture and such?

Not to mention you don't need to have an entire species to have a culture. Find a stub planet, say your character's from that planet, then in your character profile give some description of the planet's society's culture.

Furthermore, why does it need the ability to transform into a dragon? With the exception of the Shi'ido, shapeshifters can only change into similar sizes, so that would be a limitation here too.

@Dmitri As far as I know there is no set rules for shapeshifters in Star Wars. And as for what you said above, the same can be said for any species that this site has allowed to be created so far. There are only 3 sentient species that are allowed as of now, granted, however all of them have similar creatures in the Star Wars galaxy, and all of them where created for the purpose of adding another option to the plethora of species available. Each and everything I have mentioned herein is specified to this race. @Black Noise I am not certain as to the actual feel of the race as it applies to Star Wars, as I know the series borrows heavily from mythology and medieval myths to create Its creatures (IE: Yeti baseline for Chewbacca). As an author I know that taking the baseline idea from something that has already been created happens more often than not. Whether it feels like a Star Wars species or not is entirely opinionated based on a certain point of view. Some people will agree, others may not. I will never have the ability to give you a for certain response as to why this race should or has to exist. But as far as I can tell there is no one on this site that can give you a definitive reason why something SHOULD exist. Therefor it seems I'm contending with a lot of reasons for "why not to" instead.

Recently, a rule was implemented over on the tech board wherein all the tech had to have a sufficiently Star Wars feel. I'm sure that is leaking over to the other content creation boards.

@Outlander Granted, that is something that needs to be clarified in the rules, but it is nonetheless entirely opinionated. If someone said that sentient matresses (Damn I love this whole sentient mattress thing...) felt like Star Wars, they technically aren't wrong. To them and others it may feel star-warsy. In my opinion it is not, but that does not and cannot override anyone elses opinion on the matter.

Yeah, it is opinionated. However, it's not your opinion that really matters when it comes to getting the species passed. If the admin reviewing it doesn't think so, then for all intensive purposes, it isn't star wars enough.

If it matters, i'm kind agreeing that this submission is just too much in it's own right, not really star warsy, and a bit too close to the Elder Scrolls.

@Outlander I understand both points. It was far fetched, and I knew the chances where low. Cheers on reviewing it, though

Just with the intent alone, I don't see how this species would be unique enough or relevant to accomplish such goals, when it could be accomplished by any other character you create using the species already present.

Unapproved.
