Black Sun
"It is a vast criminal syndicate…its influence felt on every planet from the Core Worlds to the Outer Rim. Black Sun has existed for hundreds of years, and embedded itself in the very fiber of the galaxy. The resources at its disposal are almost limitless. The soldiers under its command number in the tens of thousands. The ignorant even call it the most powerful force in the known universe."
―Darth Sidious in in 33 BBY, thousands of years in the future.
The Black Sun, also known as the Black Sun Syndicate is just that, a crime syndicate operating off of many worlds in both Republic and Hutt space, though they have no outposts in the Dark Jedi Empire. It deals in spice smuggling, extortion, illegal weapons trafficking, slave trade, and bounty hunting.
Due to their secretive nature, the early history of Black Sun is hard to trace. However, it is speculated that its seeds were planted on the planet Denon after the planet was hit by a plague in 13,400 BBY. A number of criminal groups began taking advantage of this situation, in particular taking advantage of the growing corruption on the planet to slowly absorb other criminal groups and take control over the black market on the planet, supplying food and other products in the aftermath of the plague, at a time when these goods were hard to reach for most citizens of Denon.
By taking advantage of their dominance over the black market, this group, originally called just the Syndicate, began taking control of the underworld throughout the city planet. During the course of years and decades they were able to eliminate almost all competition on the planet, ruthlessly taking down any other organization that threatened their grasp on power in the slightest. In the year 13,388 BBY, having taken complete control of the Denon underworld, the Syndicate was ready to spread its reach beyond the Denon system. The next few decades were spent strengthening their foothold over the surrounding sector, also expanding into smuggling and piracy during this time.
With the organization flourishing and credits flowing in, the leader at the time, a highly ambitious Bothan, made the ill advised decision to expand into Hutt territories. Their advances were too early, their strength and influence nowhere near enough to challenge the Hutts. The organization suffered huge losses and lost much of its power. Only upon Denon and surrounding regions did it maintain its hold on power. Its continued existence on the line, a number of changes were made by their new leader to bring them back to their old glory and beyond. It was at this time that the name Black Sun was taken up. Reborn as the Black Sun, the Syndicate once more began its ascendancy through the criminal world.
By the time of the time of the Alsakan Crisis, Black Sun was once more a power on the rise, having once more reached the stature it before its rebirth. Slowly, patiently Black Sun grew in size, gathering resources, using its reach in the black market to take advantage of the war and its aftermath to greatly increase its wealth. Finally when the Hutt Wars began, the organization was in a situation where it could take advantage of the war in which the entire galaxy was engulfed, having already taken control over crime in the Inner Rim, it was ready to expand. With the Hutts and the Republic having turned their attention to war mongering, the stage as set for Black Sun to increase their influence beyond the Inner Rim.
The Black Sun operates in small cells on each world it has business on, usually maintaining a hidden enclave on that world as well. A leader, also known as a Crime Lord, is assigned to lead Black Sun interests on that world. However, where there is a planetary interest, there is also usually a sector interest. Therefore, Crime Lords usually answer to Sector Overseers, who answer directly to the Black Sun's leader or his Second-In-Command.
The leader of the Black Sun is simply referred to as "the boss", and his real name is usually kept secret to all but the very inner circle of the crime organization, to the point where even most Sector Overseers don't know his true name. He rarely appears in person before the members of his organization, preferring to appear to them in holographic transmissions that garble the sound of his true voice. The leader of the Black Sun has a string of safe houses constructed on numerous planets and is constantly moving between them, to throw any would-be pursuers off of his trail.
Whenever the Black Sun puts out a bounty, usually of considerable size, on a being's head, other bounty guilds are quick to to add the hit to their own lists; such is the influence of the Syndicate. It is generally considered a taboo to be on the Black Sun's bad side.
