In the last few weeks and months, Elenath had felt more and more guilty spending his time in meditation and study in near-solitude on the Starlight Beacon. The Jedi, now more than ever, needed active members of the Order who would step out and make a positive difference in the galaxy. For years now, Elenath felt as though he was held back, effectively hamstrung by his own inability to effectively grasp or control his abilities. At times, he even felt as though the Force was a curse — always flooding his mind and dreams with disjointed images, feelings, and senses he didn't and couldn't understand. Even simple, shallow interactions with Elenath's fellow Knights and Padawans brought unbidden portents to the Echani's mind, and what he saw was not always pleasant. Others learned to keep their distance, a fact that led him to seek solitude even more.

So now, despite his station as a Jedi Seer, Elenath had taken his X-wing to the cold planet of Sverend, which lay close to the Jedi world of Ithor. What prompted him to make the excursion were the words of his old teacher, Master Ivoriel. "Embrace these visions, Elenath," he remembered from many years ago. "If you are to be a seer, an oracle of the Light, then you mustn't shut out what you sense. Find what gives you clarity; then pursue it." At the time, the knight interpreted this to delve into the archives and study as much as he could. While his knowledge certainly increased, his experiences did not improve.

Touching down on one of the far northernmost frozen islands of Sverend, disturbed snow whirled into the air. Elenath climbed out of his ship and Beorn ejected from the astromech port, extruding his all-terrain spikes from his spherical housing. Wrapping his scarf close around his neck, the indigo-skinned Echani shivered and looked upwards to the mountain he intended on climbing. "They say that the auroras and starscape of Sverend are second to none," he said half to himself and half to his BB pal. "Let's go see for ourselves, shall we? Oh, and keep your scanners up for any life forms...we don't know what's out there, little one."

Elenath shivered as the wind picked up and grew bitter along the mountainside. Though he had not been walking for long, the forest greenery had given way to mottled grey rocks and then a frosting of thicker white snow. Beorn beeped and coo'd, reassuring the Jedi that his scanners still detected nothing substantial on the horizon. Elenath pulled his scarf tighter around his neck and looked up at the clear, but darkening sky. "Good thing it isn't winter...this trip would be impossible for sure if it was." The Echani didn't mind the cold such as it was now. Being born and raised in the void of space, he was more used to colder temperatures than some.

Through the pink-rose sunset flushed sky, the stars were slowly beginning to appear. With barely any wisps of cloud, it was looking to be a perfect night of tranquility to meditate under the starry heavens and blazing auroras. However, on many planets, Elenath knew that many predators were nocturnal. He'd already seen some large birds of prey circling far overhead, but nothing that considered humanoids as food.

Nothing yet, anyway.

The kingdom of Sverend prides themselves on their neutrality, but as such they were somewhat tight-lipped about their home planet's flora and fauna. Elenath had gotten the requisite documents and permission to land, but he didn't press them about what the landscape was like here. "Uh...Beorn, those are just normal sized avians up there, right? Not starship sized ones playing tricks on my perspective?" The BB unit's sensors whirred for a few ominous moments before his reassuring "bweEp" warbled. Just normal birds.

The snowy path that Elenath trudged through passed along the cliffside of the mountain where a crevice had formed naturally in the rock wall. The knight peered inside, also reaching out with his robust Force senses to discern what was within, if anything. While appearing innocuous, the crevice certainly looked like it could be good shelter from the wind and snow, wide and deep enough for a humanoid to easily fit, but also possibly something potentially larger...

"Waiting to freeze over, are you?"
A voice that spoke in accented Basic echoed out from further within the crack in the mountain, distorted slightly after bouncing along the frost-lined sides. The knight's senses would find- well, a living being, certainly. More was muffled as if beneath a blanket woven from the background noise of the universe. Too loud to hear anything clearer, and too subtle to spot if one wasn't looking its way.

"You can just come in. No need to knock."

Was it dangerous? The voice sounded vaguely friendly, but who could possibly be hanging out in a rocky crevice in this frozen place just as a Jedi happened to be seeking shelter? It could just as easily be simple good luck. Even still, many predators were nocturnal.

From Nakoa's perspective, someone passing by and stretching out with the Force into where he happened to be was a fun change of pace that stoked his infinite curiosity to the surface. Colliding with other sensitives was rare in times when it wasn't intentional. He wondered idly what sect they were from.

If Elenath entered, he'd find the crevice widened broadly after a few meters into a full cavern, fanged like a maw by stalagmite and stalactite around the edges. In the middle was a jorongo-cloaked man sitting on a folding camp seat, a travel pack nearby, and a heat lamp emitting campfire warmth. Dim light spread from it, too faint to be visible from the entrance, but enough to lend strange and mixed shadows to anything in the natural stone chamber and bring Nakoa into sharp relief.

Amber-gold eyes reflected the half-light like a cat's. Above one, an eyebrow raised curiously. There would be no sense of hostility about him through the Force.

Drakon was cold, just like he thought he would. As night began to come he realized that his time in the woods would need to come to an end or he would freeze. Carrying a small lamp emitting a small amount of heat and light the Jedi Knight dressed in clothes too fine to be wandering in the woods, began to walk down from the mountain. It was in worlds like this, where nature hadn't been conquered by durasteel and civilization that he was able to relax. With the war still going on Drakon was nervous afraid of failure and not being able to help those in the galaxy that needed it.

He had never seen war, never tasted blood in his mouth nor the feeling of taking another life. Sensations that he feared would become all too come for him now. In nature fighting was common, survival of the fittest but out in the wider galaxy death on the scale of planets and star systems was something new to Drakon. He could feel it now, on days when he just meditated expanding his awareness to the wider galaxy, the death of thousands. It sickened him.

With his lamp leading his way down, he found himself taking a different route through the snow because of fallen trees and the hope it was a faster route back to his ship. Fear didn't make him move faster as he was confident he could defend himself but concern for the cold did make him take more risks with jumping from rock to rock.

Until he jumped onto on rock covered in snow only for his feet to slip and begin a comedic fall. "Dam-" He said as he rolled down the mountain using the Force to help him cushion his fall and avoid the sharp rocks. "Shi-" Came next as he caught himself on a rock only for the snow that was kicked up to slam into his back to push him again off the rock and further down. "Fu-" Was the final thing he said as the snow both cushioned his fall and covered him almost head to toe.

With a gentle wave of energy from the Force, Drakon threw the snow off him. It had gotten into his nice robe, into his boots, and into places meant for someone special. Already feeling his body was going to go into shock quickly if he didn't get warmed up quickly and knowing he had dropped the lamp somewhere as he was falling he looked around quickly attempting to find shelter where he could attempt to make a fire.

He had landed near a crevice where another man was walking and Drakon heard some voice come from the crevice but he was too cold and disoriented to know what the voice had said. If any looked at Drakon they would find a man dressed in a fancy red robe with green edging, with medium-length black hair and shaky green eyes. A Jedi Drakon might be but he was a freezing one.

Until having passed by the opening of the crevace, Elenath felt nothing. Then quite suddenly, the flash of a murmuring heartbeat and all the senses that came with detecting a lifeform filled the knight's mind, just as the newcomer made himself known. Although perhaps Elenath was the newcomer here, seeing as this one had already set up camp.

Elenath's eyebrow raised in amusement as he cautiously explored the entrance to the deeper cave. "I certainly hope not, hence why I've ventured here in the 'summer' months. Yourself?" he replied amicably. Something else tugged at his mind...was it a shared connection to the Force? Elenath wasn't certain. "The north pole of Sverend isn't exactly a popular location —”

Before he even finished his thought, another flash of something incoming alerted the Jedi Seer. His head spun around, just in time to see another man slam headfirst into the snow right outside the crevace. Beorn spun his head, beeping wildly about someone having appeared on his sensors. Elenath rolled his eyes. "Yes...I can see there are two here, Beorn..." he mumbled under his breath. Truly the Force worked in strange ways.

"Elenath," the indigo-skinned Echani introduced. "What's brought you both out here?" He doubted it was for the same reason as himself. Few would go this far simply to stargaze, and Elenath had yet to meet someone who had the same connection or inspiration from stars that he did. Even now, as he placed a hand upon the icy wall of the crevace entrance, his psychometry triggered with images of Sverend dire wolves huddling close for shelter sometime in the past.

"I'm quite comfortable," the figure replied. Upon inspection, they were dressed well for skin coverage, albeit much lighter than the average human for the weather. Midway through Elenath's speaking on the north pole, a figure garbed with red and green crashed from the sky into a snowdrift outside the cave. Nakoa leaned slightly to catch a glimpse.

"Saint Nicholas? Is it Life Day already?" they lighthearted joked. The second arrival's choice of outfit was too good not to make fun of. Amber-gold eyes returned to Elenath as the Wrean straightened back up in his seat, each arm folded casually against each leg. A smirk crossed the figure's face.

"Call me Singh," they introduced in return. Singh's gaze lingered on the other man as his hand touched the wall. "Exploration of old places. Yourself?" was his simple and largely unhelpful answer. His eyes glanced at the Echani's hand, then moved back toward the cavern entrance.

"Are they well?" Nakoa breezily wondered aloud. Drakon had been largely quiet after landing aside from some truly audible shivering and clattering of teeth.

Upon Singh's remark, Elenath took a second look at the figure. Did he spy a hint of cold-resistant Wrean physiology? The seer's study of the near-innumerable species and races of the galaxy was extensive, but not infallible. Elenath chuckled at their comment about Saint Nicholas — the fallen figure certainly matched the outfit. Beorn, ever the curious droid, rolled over and cautiously prodded Drakon's body with an extended prehensile arm.

The Jedi couldn't quite get a read on Singh. While on one hand, they were non-threatening, but on the other, Elenath could sense some latent, powerful force of will from them. However, this place certainly was old, so perhaps Singh's explanation was the truth. After pondering for a moment, and unable to sense any ill will, the Echani decided to reveal all.

"I am trained in the Force," he began, "and my strengths lie in revealing the past...seeing the future. I can sense things that most can't, even amongst my peers." Elenath's hand slid across the icy wall as he entered the cavern proper, but opposite where Singh sat so as to not block the only means of escape. More visions played across his light purple eyes — scenes of a great fanged beast threatening the dire wolf pups, with the mother standing her ground with haunches raised and teeth bared.

"But..." the Jedi continued, his hand falling from the wall and his gaze drooping. "These visions come unbidden. I can scarcely touch another without witnessing their past, their emotions...their potential futures." He exhaled, his breath visible in the dim light of the heat lamp. Night had now fully fallen, with only a hint of sunlight peeking over the distant mountains. The temperature continued to fall, though not lower than what Elenath wasn't already prepared for. He knew northern Sverend nights got bitter. "I've always felt some strange connection to the stars," the Echani continued. "Perhaps it has something to do with the life force sustained by such stars...I'm not sure. So I'm here to climb this mountain's peak to gaze upon the starscape and meditate on the constellations. I feel as though it may help."

Elenath hoped shooting straight and being honest to a fault wouldn't backfire here. He knew he couldn't defend himself well to begin with, never mind if he was in the middle of meditating. However, Elenath carried little other than the clothes on his back, his utility belt, and his saberstaff. Stepping back towards the entrance, he prepared to leave as there was still some ways to go. "I heard that the auroras were a sight to behold too, this time of year."

Drakon found himself next to two people, but his head was swimming thanks to the fall, it had taken him sometime to figure out where everything was. First, he had visited this world to explore its heights and to train a bit on his survivalist skills and to help him deal with his fears of the coming war. Now here he was knee or head deep in snow having founded himself going down too fast on a side of a mountain.

Now there was two people one of them looked to be Echani and a human, or what Drakon thought to be a human, both of which were inside the crevice. So naturally Drakon quickly went into the crevice hoping to get close to the heat lamp. Drakon remembered his manners but was more concerned with catching a cold or getting sick due to his clothes now being mostly filled with snow. So, he had begun to take off layers without much concern for those around him.

"D-d-drakon." He said finally after removing his robes and tunic. Drakon didn't have most people's concern about modesty and revealed his toned muscle from years of living in a forest and then training with the Jedi. Drakon hadn't fully heard Nakoa's joke and just assumed he was asked for a name.

When he had removed enough clothes to be considered immodest but had kept enough to not be a streaker did Drakon finally turned his attention to the other two in the cave. Which only Drakon now seemed to realize was in fact a cave.

"Sorry, didn't want to catch a cold. Wet clothes make's one body likely to grow ill. Heard something about seeing into the future and stuff, Echani friend but didn't quiet catch your name? Actually both of your names. Where has my head gone to, so sorry usually I am more put together than this." Drakon spoke with a droid's diction but with a young man's humor.

"Neat place this cave one wonders how it formed, and perhaps if it is the only one on the mountain." Drakon had fully embraced entering the cave and staying there until the hospitality of his host left. Better a place safe from the cold than to risk having to use the Force to run fast enough to get to the ship and into the heated seating before the body began to suffer the more negative impact of the cold.

The Wrean lightly pressed the tips of his fingers together in his lap, amber-golds eyeing Elenath with mild amusement. The Force interacted with those most sensitive to it in so many strange ways. Although Nakoa hadn't asked for or expected such deep troubles, he was almost sympathetic.

"You look for answers from far away." It was a statement, simple and straightforward. Nakoa supposed it was interesting enough for his attention on the way up the mountain. They slowly stood from their seat. "I will join you." Another statement.

A learning experience for all of them, perhaps. Out in the wilds far from civilization was where the best contemplation happened in the Wrean's opinion.

Speaking of 'all', Nakoa turned to look at the snow-covered and rapidly disrobing 'Drakon' person. The Wrean was unbothered by "immodesty", moreso by the impression this one wasn't too bright. Nakoa pointed a finger at Drakon.

"That's a myth," Singh dryly pointed out regarding wet clothes. Wet skin in the cold was far more likely to get one sick- from frostbite or hypothermia. This one looked human and more likely to suffer the latter. "Call me Singh," he repeated patiently.

"You here for the mountain?" They wondered if some esoteric quality of the mountain had a knack for attracting strays.

He pondered Singh's statement on where he looked for his answers, scratching his chin. "Yes...I suppose I do search for my answers from far away. Though if my efforts bear fruit, then it has been a profitable endeavour, for my part." Elenath nodded his head in agreement to Singh's second statement, welcoming the accompaniment.

One eyebrow of the Echani slowly raised as Drakon shuffled past and promptly began stripping. "Elenath," he replied to the now mostly-nude figure standing near the heat lamp. Though perhaps it was bad timing, seeing as they were about to leave the little cave that had given some shelter from the biting winds.

Turning back to the cave's exit, Elenath stepped outside again to view out across the valley below. His ship was visible, just barely, in a small clearing between some of the evergreen trees. He adjusted his scarf again, turning back to Drakon should the figure decide not to follow. "If our paths do not cross again, may the Force be with you," he offered to Drakon, beginning his journey the rest of the way up the mountainside.

rutger-van-de-steeg-watgroot.jpg

Not long after, Elenath had nearly arrived at his destination at the peak of the mountain. By now, night had fully fallen and the auroras were on full display in their brilliance. The snow sparkled with the lights of the sky, reflecting both the colours of the auroras and the twinkling billions of stars overhead. The Jedi seer smiled, seeing a rock at the very summit where he would commune. However, in the brief moment of serenity, a warning like a clarion call resounded within his psyche. The hairs on his neck prickled and he wanted more than anything to fight or flight. But the Force told him something different:

- BE STILL -

Elenath froze, holding out a hand to his companion, or companions if Drakon and Singh had followed. A few moments of silence followed, with nothing but the whistling wind over the peak to be heard. Then, a deep rumble that could be felt in his very core traveled up from the earth. Snow erupted in a great cloud of white as a massive worm clad in white scales burst from the ground, searching for prey.

The Jedi dared not move a muscle, hoping that his senses told him correctly in that it detected food via sensing tremors and vibrations. Not immediately finding its food, the great creature let out a bone-chilling trill that rent the air. If combat did break out, it would be a mighty foe to take down.

Drakon had begun to warm up and listened to the man say that being in wet clothes in the cold did not make things worse, which was a funny joke if Drakon hadn't known that the man was just dead wrong. It was already well-documented that if your clothes are wet and it's cold the wet clothes will actually transmit heat rapidly away from the body. This was why Drakon had gotten close to the heat lamp to attempt to capture the heat.

Drakon would listen to both of their names, Elenath for the fellow Jedi and Singh for the other man. It was clear at least for Drakon that Elenath was trying to do some self-discovery. Something that while important for all Jedi shouldn't be forced. To go on a spiritual journey one shouldn't just travel to nice relaxing places but rather face the truth of the galaxy. See the corrupt surface of Nar Shadda, explore the painful memories of an old battlefield, and places of strong memory and emotion. Here where you face the cruelty and many different facets of the galaxy can learn to question oneself explore a deeper meaning in these things and perhaps come to a more holistic understanding of the galaxy and one's place in it.

But for some, they needed quiet reflection to question themselves but Drakon didn't and probably wouldn't understand those that did. So perhaps it was Drakon who needed to open himself up. Drakon simply complied that into questions for later.

"The Force be with you as well, friend. Stay warm." Drakon added the last bit just for the humor of it. And would remain next to the heat lamp for as long as possible until he felt his clothes had dried as best they could and himself warmed up from the snow that had of course snuck under his clothes.

Whenever that was complete Drakon would walk off back to his ship wearing the slightly damped clothes and racing down to his ship. He already had gotten up the mountain no need to explore it further. Plus he only came to have a small vacation not talk of philosophy.

/exit thread.

Singh's gaze rose to the stars above. The sky was painted deep blues and light violets, opaque and opalescent against the pitch canvas behind and its twinkling white lights. Chill wind blew over the snowy hills and brushed through pine-needle branches as the quiet sounds of night drifted peacefully along.

But of course, as always, peace was a lie.

Amber-golds languidly fell from the distant heavens to find the ground. Singh was still but stiffened as the beast erupted from below, scowling as its overloud screeching pierced his ears. Aside from the volume, however, the Wrean seemed content to simply observe the creature as its head swiveled to and fro in search of a meal. Despite the massive red eye, it seemed it must be a simple one for light contrast and movement only.

To verify this, somewhere behind Elenath, Nakoa slowly rose their hand a flicked a finger. A large, dead branch went crack and fell to the stone and snow below. With gusto the beast flung its entire face toward the movement, slamming into the branch and screeching in frustration when it found no prey.

Nakoa barely managed to suppress a laugh. This worm thing was kind of cute. While it was distracted, Elenath would notice Singh stepping over the snow with such seeming featherlike lightness the fresh powder left no indent in their wake. He apparently had no interest in engaging the creature, but he was curious how the Jedi would handle things during the brief distraction.

As still as he was, Elenath felt the ripples of the weave of the Force being plucked behind him, and the wave of intent from Singh. Could they be...a Force Sensitive? Elenath thought, and in response a branch snapped some distance from the two, drawing the attention of the worm. Now indeed was the time to act, albeit the window was brief.

An eyebrow raised in recognition on the Echani as he witnessed the "snow-skating" of the half-Wrean. Quite clearly trained in the Force, it would seem. Also having no desire to engage with the apex predator, Elenath had to sit still and think hard. His skill was in the esoteric — not the physical. Closing his eyes while the enormous creature trilled again and desperately searched for its prey, the Jedi brushed his fingertips along the powdery snow. The memory of the earth flowed through him, filling his mind again with images long past...

- The wind sings and howls along the peak, whirling snow on its breath -

- Thunder roars in a storm, lightning striking the mountainside and causing a mighty cascade of snow -

- The kings of the mountain sleep while the avalanche tremors abide -

Eyes snapping open to the silvery sea of stars and aurora, Elenath's eyes searched and found the tip of a rocky crag, poised to fall. He reached out with both hands, concentrating with all his willpower to accomplish what most Knights would achieve with relative ease. The rock split with a resounding CRACK, and its peak tumbled into a mound of loose snow. The worm spun and dove again after the rock, now beginning to slowly tumble with the weight of the snow behind it. Elenath continued to watch, preparing to make a dash towards the very peak of the mountain. While achieving its purpose, with just a little more encouragement an avalanche could form and send the creature underground again.

Nakoa watched the other man touch the snow, head tilting at the sight and the echoes it drew to the surface in the Force. Would they find meaning in the snow?

The answer came after Elanath raised his head again and reached out for distant stone. A sly grin curled the Wrean wanderer's lips behind his cloth covering. That they were Force sensitive was hardly a secret. They merely had no need to flex or show off. A moment was taken for consideration of choice. He hopped himself up into the branches of a tall, leaning tree.

Irirangi took a breath of ice-cold air, hands raised as if preparing to conduct an orchestra. He pulled on the Current, directed it toward the gathering snow with a slow wave of his hands. At first, nothing changed. Then a crackling as compacted snow weakened just so, wave upon wave of frozen powder almost literally snowballing behind the wild beast. It built naturally from then on, more sheets of snow coming undone and careening down the mountain.

The worm was buried, tumbling all the way as it wriggled and writhed back beneath the snow and ice. Nakoa was safe from the mess below and so should Elenath unless he decided to plant himself in place during this whole mess. After consideration, the Wrean had decided it'd be more interesting to pester Elenath about his visions and the stars than watching the worm, and so decided to help out a little.

Out of the corner of his eye, Elenath spied Singh ascending a tree and releasing a powerful blast through the Force. The mountain rumbled as an avalanche began, letting loose torrents of packed snow down the cliffside. The worm let out one final screech, but buried itself into the depths of the earth.

Breathing a sigh of relief, he now felt comfortable moving now that the vibrations of his feet would be covered by the avalanche. Rushing as fast as he could to the tree, Elenath breathed heavily after the exertion. "Thank you for the backup," the Echani said. "I think I would've been worm food without you."

The highest peak was before them now, with no other obstacles in the way. Making the final trek, Elenath reached the zenith and sat cross-legged beneath the stars. In this moment, all other things washed away as he allowed himself to be come one with the Force. It was time to understand his place among the Jedi and allow himself to experience his visions to the fullest. Opening his eyes to the sky, Elenath's eyes reflected the billions of lights and the majestic purple-green auroras. "I can...see the threads of Fate...drawn between them," he spoke with an ethereal voice, the Jedi's mind far elsewhere. The visions came, and this time he allowed them to flow.

- A young Echani boy lays in his ship cabin, trying to block out the sound of his parents fighting. His father does not want the boy to go. -

- The father kneels, a broken man, as his wife is released to the stars in a ship's void burial. His eyes are filled with rage. -

- The boy, now grown, stands to face his father, now a soulless monster with blood-red eyes. -

- His past, his present, his future. -

The Wrean looked amused at Elenath's breathy thanks. "Saw this in the stars, did you?" they asked with a jocose air and dismissed the other man's thanks with a wave of the hand. They carried on.

At the peak of the mountain where Elenath sat, Nakoa stood somewhere behind him and gazed out over the land. 'Threads of Fate' the Jedi had said with the heavenly lights reflected in his eyes. As Irirangi looked up to gaze upon them himself, he hardly saw the stars at all.

Echoes rippled like song along the Currents of the Force. Subtle waves just along the surface from the Echani as if he was a pebble dropped ever so carefully into the still, mirrored lake surface. While Elenath experienced his visions, Irirangi examined the seer.

Nakoa wouldn't speak again until the visions had faded away.

"Fate is written by the willful. The stars reflect your eyes, not the other way around." Soft rustling and a lighter snap sounded behind Elenath as Nakoa lit a cigarra. They blew a cloud of smoke out into the crisp mountain air. "This I tell you."

With his visions ceased and the moment passed, Elenath's mind returned to the present and he drifted back to the ground — he'd unconsciously begun floating about a foot off the ground in his trance. The Jedi had broken out into a cold sweat, beads of moisture reflecting the light show as much as the snow did below them. Elenath breathed heavily, wiping his brow as Singh made his comment.

He smiled tiredly as he replied, "On the contrary, your fate is merely a path that you follow — as much as one might try to change it, the more they fulfill their destiny. I simply try to see my path and others' to help guide us forward."

The Jedi's thoughts returned to what he'd just seen. This was the first time he'd truly opened up to his visions, and what he saw was nothing short of disturbing. Elenath knew he'd likely just seen his father, Amarthan, kneeling next to a body. Elenath's mother. The Echani hadn't been able to keep contact after he was sent to the Order, and now he felt a terrible dread deep in his core. "I've...seen something terrible. I have to leave...I need to see if it's true," Elenath said to his companion. "Thank you for accompanying me — I would not have made it without you."

His farewell said, the Jedi would make the trek back down the mountain to his ship. The Force guided him to a location deep in space, somewhere Elenath knew he would find answers.
