Ho-lee-shit. This actually happened, I was hoping it was an onion article, but nay-nay to that. lmao, she then went on to say it caused the following issues:

“When you look at life expectancy, there are problems in the black race: sickle-cell anemia is something that comes up, diabetes is something that’s prevalent in the genetic makeup and you just can’t help it,” Marble said. “Although I’ve got to say, I’ve never had better barbecue and better chicken and ate better in my life than when you go down south and you — I love it.”

“The Mexican diet, in Mexico, with all of the fresh vegetables, and you go down there and they’re much thinner than they are up here, they’ve changed their diet,” she continued.

Marble went on to mention “alcoholics, rageoholics, drug addicts, you have people, they say, who are addicted to porn.”

Oh dumb people. You always have the funniest things to say. Same goes for everyone who freaked the hell out over it tbh. Seems obvious that she was trying to make a joke with the barbecue and chicken line, and I am hard pressed to find anyone who hates either of those kinds of food, no matter the color of their skin. It always confused me why black people are somehow singled out for liking fried chicken, as if white people don't eat the stuff as well. Racism is a concept I struggle to understand many times, especially the older the stereotype is. If anything her comment about the mexicans was more offensive, since she seems to imply they are all skinny and underweight because they eat lots of vegatables, and not due to being unable to make enough money to eat on a regular basis.

Still, on a scale of dumb things that politicians have said, this doesn't make the list. That is reserved for hank johnson and his thoughts on guam.

If you say it's a joke, then you don't understand the conservative base. These kinds of comments are idiotic, yes, but the super far right people eat them up. These politicians do that because their districts are so gerrymandered to kingdom come that they don't have to worry about general elections anymore, just primaries -- and it's those same super far right people who vote in the Republican primary elections.

It's not a joke. It's an electoral tactic, which makes it anything but funny.

To be honest I doubt this will lead to anything but her getting fired. When you get called a racist, and it hits the news, your career in the public eye is over. Now all it is, in my opinion, is a matter of time before she is either "persuaded" to step down by her party, or manages to hang in there until the next election, where she will no doubt not be re-elected as her opponents use this goldmine of a quote against her.

That is absolutely not true. Virtually every politician is called a racist these days. It doesn't have the same impact anymore, especially to Republican primary voters.

I wouldn't say virtually every politician, usually just the republicans. But than again, you explained quite well how there can be strong pockets of populations in the districts who might not find this bad and who may even support her actions. It just blows my mind about how that can end up being the case, but I suppose that's the difference between national and local levels of scale.

Though to explain, I was mainly speaking from watching many people of the media who are accused of racism get a black list and the boot, most times deservedly, but other times due to over-reactions by a few people who write about the story which leads to misinformation around what was said, often because scandal and misbehavior get a lot of traffic and traction with readers.
